Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the form of speech act of complaint by children character on “Stand by Me Doraemon” film and to describe complaint strategy that is used by the children to older people and among children. This research used illocutionary speech acts theory by Searle (1975) and theory of complaint strategies by Trosborg (1995). This research used descriptive qualitative method. The results found 30 data containing complaints by children's character to older people and among children either directly or indirectly. Based on Trosborg classifications, the complaint strategies found in this study can be categorized into four categories, including complaint strategy with no explicit reproach (4 data), complaint strategy with expression of annoyance or disapproval (17 data), complaint strategy with accusation (1 data), and complaint strategy with blaming (8 data). The findings also showed that the children character on this film mainly use complaining strategies with expression of annoyance or disapproval.

Abstract

Globalization has encouraged the enhancement of media, so that various kinds of information are accessible. Hence, Japan is utilizing media to promote their pop culture globally. One of the countries whose media is influenced by Japanese pop culture is China. This study aims to determine the mediascapes of Japanese pop culture in Chinese drama series, specifically the ones that are adapted from Zhao Qianqian’s works; A Love So Beautiful (2017) and Put Your Head on Your Shoulder (2019). Theory used in this study is mediascapes–one of the five dimensions in Arjun Appadurai’s disjuncture globalization theory. The method of this research is descriptive analysis with qualitative approach. This study shows that mediascapes of Japanese pop culture can be identified through images of some anime characters that appear in A Love So Beautiful and Put Your Head on My Shoulder drama series. These images are shown to attract Chinese people’s interest of Japanese pop culture as well as to construct the idea of Japan’s positive image.

Abstract

Hyouka no toritatejoshi or known as an evaluation of toritate particle is very important in Japanese language. But there are many toritate particles with similar function and meaning, which cause some difficulties for learners to differentiate. This study aimed to analyse the error of four Japanese toritate particles namely nanka, nante, nado, and kurai, evaluating the percentage of errors, type of errors, and identify the factors that caused error in using four toritate particles. The participants of this research were 45 Japanese language students. The instruments used in this study including interview, questionnaire, and a test. The results of this study showed that the error of toritatejoshi nado which shows quotation markers in sentences was the most common type of error. While the error of toritatejoshi kurai mostly when kurai particles combined with the other toritate particles (such as ~kurainara) was the least type of error. The factors that caused errors in using those toritatejoshi were mainly overgeneralization, followed by incomplete application of rules, false concept hypothesized, and the other special factors, respectively.

Abstract

In the world of education, the ability and sensitivity in delivering advice is needed. This is because advice is a speech that is very often used in interactions with students in building character. With regard to various important factors that must be considered in delivering speech advice, especially in learning foreign languages which may have different speech cultures. This research aims to obtain an overview how the speakers maintaining politeness in advice utterance. The maintaining politeness of advice in terms of strategy, use of modifications, in term of politeness principle, in term of cooperative principle, type of expression and variety of language used in advice utterance, so it is hoped that used as instruments in maintaining politeness in the concept of learning. This research is based on a qualitative paradigm, with content analysis techniques and inductive procedures. Sharpening the focus of the study in this research is on its pragmatic competence. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that the way to maintain politeness in speaking is to use a speech strategy, either directly or indirectly, followed by modifications in the speech. In giving advice, the most priority to pay attention to by speakers is the interests and benefits of the interlocutors, then sympathy for the interlocutors, then in giving advice, not to be arrogant, not criticizing the interlocutors and as much as possible praising the interlocutors, and to avoid disapproval of the interlocutors. Then in carrying out the conversation the speaker expresses what is needed, is relevant to the conversation, speaks the right thing, and speaks clearly. In addition to the use of these expressions and speech strategies, when delivering speeches, the ways of maintaining politeness also pay attention to the mental or psychological condition of the interlocutors.

Abstract

A compliment is one of the positive politeness strategies that had a function to bring closer the relationship between the speaker and the receiver. However, the characteristics and rules of using compliments differ based on language. Nowadays, communication opportunities between Indonesians and the Japanese had been increasing. If there any differences regarding compliments in Indonesian and Japanese, then problems that make human relationships not well-formed potentially occur. Therefore, this study aims to find out what problems are experienced by Indonesian regarding compliments in communication with Japanese, then find out what kind of action needs to take to avoid these problems. To find out the things mentioned above, the researcher conducted interviews with five respondents and distributed questionnaires based on the interview result to 60 respondents. The results of the interview and questionnaires show that Indonesians sometimes feel that the Japanese often giving compliments, and those compliments are excessive. When receiving compliments, Indonesians sometimes feel confused because they feel the object of compliment is not worthy of it, and they do not know how to respond. Moreover, Indonesians rarely feel confused when they try to give compliments to Japanese, but often feel like a failure after that. Hens, these thoughts can contribute to communication breakdown. These problems can be attributed to compliment factors and strategies. Hens, it is necessary to provide understanding to both speakers of the language that different factors that support the emergence of compliment and the use of compliment strategies.

Abstract

The theoretical research of Japanese linguistics is diverse. However, applying such research theory to Japanese language education does not necessarily help learners’ understanding. The purpose of this research is to concretely present the problems that arise from the gap between theory and practice in Japanese language research and Japanese language education. In this study, we examine the effect of the theoretical explanation of the Japanese adnominal clause on the learners’ understanding. We selected 10 second-year university Japanese learners as research subjects. They were selected because second-year learners already learn the adnominal clause. The adnominal clause was chosen because it has a considerably simple construction to check whether the learners can comprehend the meaning from those simple constructions. Since the theoretical explanation of linguistics is difficult for learners to understand, we gave a lesson using the learners’ awareness of language called “metalanguage awareness.” By using metalanguage awareness, learners are guided to understand the meaning through the comprehension of its grammatical construction using linguistic terms both in Japanese and their native language, which is Indonesian. As a result, it was found that even though adnominal clause construction is simple, the understanding of the meaning is not that simple. The understanding of adnominal clauses depends on the understanding of more basic learning items of “particles” and “clauses”, which learners still can’t grasp. We conclude that introducing such dependency in focus on form teaching method has the advantage for the teacher to check the degree of learners’ understanding. In this study, the adnominal clause can be used to check whether learners have fully understood the concept and usage of “particles” and “clauses” in Japanese. Since both concepts are very basic, it is important to take a step back and re-explain both concepts and usage so learners can use them correctly in the future.

Abstract

The oral translation course at the Japanese Language Education Study Program, Universitas Brawijaya does not impose special requirements for students who want to take it. For this reason, this study aims to analyse the quality of student’s oral translations and to determine the competencies that affect the results of student’s Japanese-Indonesian oral translations. In the translation quality, special parameters are used as measurement tools, which are: accuracy, fluency, and clarity. Meanwhile, the parameters to determine the competence that affects the translation results using the bilingual sub-competence, extralinguistic sub-competence, nation translation sub-competence, instrumental sub-competence, strategic sub-competence, psychological sub-competence.   This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The data used in this study were the transcripts of the results of the oral translation exercises from the audio “Nihongo Soumatome Mondai” that was played. The data collection technique uses primary and secondary sources. The analysis in this study used Miles and Huberman theory (reduction, data display, and verification). The result of accuracy parameter is inaccurate and the fluency parameter of the most translated result is fluent. In the clarity parameter, the highest number of translated results is non-acceptable. This shows that although students are fluent, their translation result are not acceptable. Meanwhile, the translation competence that affects the translation results of students who take the tsuuyaku course is the lack of a bilingual sub-competency factor or mastery of the source language of a translator. Although they already had the basics of translation before, however, due to the low bilingual sub-competence, no matter how well the translation theory has been mastered, it is still difficult to produce an accurate and clear translation.

Abstract

Research on the acquisition of suprasegmental sounds in Japanese has been carried out both in terms of production and perception. The conducted research shows that there are difficulties in acquiring Japanese sounds. This study focused on the perception of Japanese accents, with the aim of describing the learner’s ability to identify Japanese accent patterns. The data sources of this research are Japanese learners at beginner level. Data were collected using a test instrument, through a hearing test, in the form of a set of words which selected based on the category of words and patterns of Japanese accents to be measured by listening and recording techniques. The results showed that based on the results of the hearing test, of the 17 participants who completed the test reached the highest score 47.14 (S01), and the lowest score of 15.41 (S14), with an overall average score of 29.16 and Standard Deviation (SD) 7.9018. These scores represent the participants’ ability to identify Japanese accent patterns is in the very low category. The results indicate that the learners have difficulty identifying Japanese accent patterns. In fact, the vocabulary in research instrument was the basic vocabulary that had been learned by them. It can be concluded that the acquisition of vocabulary is not in line with the suprasegmental elements attached to these words. The results of this research need to be continued by applying listening exercises of Japanese accent.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of ateji used in Japanese song lyrics, and to analyze ateji as a form of figurative speech by the semantic-semiotic connection between the words used in ateji’s writing and reading. Analysis is done qualitatively based on Shirose’s theory of ateji classification and Japan’s hiyu hyougen (figurative speech) theory. This research resulted in the finding of 4 ateji types in Japanese song lyrics, which are ateji for foreign words pronunciation, ateji for pronouns, ateji for replacing words, and ateji for words used in specific titles/works. The use of metaphor (in’yu), metonymy (kan’yu), and synecdoche (teiyu) are also found between the uses of ateji, based on the relation of the words in said ateji. The words can be linked through contextual relation, conceptual relation, or semantical relation. The connection of the words can also result in similar uses as other figurative speeches not included in Japanese’s hiyu hyougen, which indicated that ateji can be handled and understood as a general form of figurative speech in written Japanese language.
