Abstract

One of the difficulties students experience in learning Japanese grammar is limited study time. Practical learning without limitations of space, time, and place through an e-learning system allows students to learn independently, efficiently, and effectively which also can be applied as a solution to improve students' mastery of Japanese grammar. This research applies the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE) model in developing e-learning application designs on smartphones. The data in this study were collected using pre-experimental methods and by distributing Likert scale questionnaires to fifteen students. The application developed is named “Manabu Bunpou”, validated by the IT team, and consists of JLPT level N4 grammar practice tests, several levels, and quizzes. The material including ninety-three Japanese sentence patterns developed from several sources and also contains conversation videos accompanied by texts. From the questionnaires distributed to Japanese language learners, the “Manabu Bunpou” application is considered highly accessible, helps improve understanding of basic Japanese grammar, and supports independent learning. However, according to the participants, the materials in the application are still limited and hence need further development.

Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness and accuracy of Google Translate and Systran in translating Japanese to English, focusing on syntactic and semantic error patterns. It evaluates the translation quality of the text 音楽のテンポが経済的意 思決定に及ぼす影響 “Ongaku no tenpo ga keizaiteki ishi kettei ni oyobosu eikyou” (The Effect of Music Tempo on Economic Decision-Making) by Kobayashi, Fujikawa, and Foo (2012). The methodology employs a qualitative approach, categorizing errors based on syntactic and semantic criteria. Despite advancements in Neural Machine Translation (NMT), challenges remain in achieving accurate and contextually appropriate translations, particularly for complex language pairs like Japanese-English. The study highlights the persistent issues in maintaining syntactic and semantic accuracy in translations produced by Google Translate and Systran. It underscores the importance of Machine Translation Post-Editing (MTPE) to enhance translation quality. The findings reveal that while MT systems have significantly improved, human intervention remains essential to address nuanced linguistic and cultural elements. The research emphasizes the relevance of Machine- Aided Human Translation (MAHT) as a balanced approach, combining the efficiency of MT with human expertise to ensure high-quality translations. This approach is crucial for fostering better cross-cultural communication and understanding in the translation industry.

Abstract

The purpose of the article is to create a scientific theory of lean production of goods and services (the theory of thrift), from the perspective of Japanese culture which is applicable in higher education and agriculture. Currently, a new technological way is being formed. One of the key concepts of this technological way will be the scientific theory of lean manufacturing, which can be created based on the analysis of the practice of lean manufacturing of the Toyota automobile company. The analysis of the directions of crisis management indicates the growing relevance of the introduction of lean manufacturing of goods and services in all new areas of activity, in particular in higher education and agriculture as a part of Japanese culture. However, fragmentary implementation of lean manufacturing ideas can be inefficient. This necessitates the development of the concept and content of the general theory of lean production of goods and services in higher education and agriculture. The article describes the functions, roles, and structural elements of the general theory of lean production of goods and services, a conceptual approach to the introduction of lean production of goods and services in higher education and agriculture as a part of Japanese culture is being formed.

Abstract

The study reports on the effect of ‘Cognitive Illustration’ in Kanji learning in the JFL setting. Cognitive illustration is not a formal concept that can be found regularly in Kanji teaching and learning methods. It is purposely used in this study to describe ‘kinds of imagery that students have when they see or hear a Kanji character and its meaning by referring to its formation process, including pictographs (shoukei moji), simple ideographs (shiji moji), compound ideographs (kai-i moji), and phonetic-ideographic characters (keisei moji)’. Involving twenty-eight students taking a Kanji course, namely fifteen students participated in the experimental class and thirteen students participated in the control class, this experimental research observes the effect of cognitive illustration on students who learn hundreds and fifteen Kanji of Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N5 or basic level. The results show that students in the experimental class perform better in Kanji memorization than those in the control groups. It can be seen from the t-test results with the t-score value obtained (11,38) which is much higher than the t-table, both at the 5% (2,06) and 1% (2,78) significance levels. In relation to Kanji learning, there are some factors that contribute to the enhancement of Kanji learning, including varying Kanji learning strategies, thorough guided instruction, and ordering Kanji strategies.

Abstract

The multilingualization of Web sites with high quality is essential due to the number of foreigners residing in Japan increasing, web pages need to be translated to obtain information. In this study, we conducted a survey to clarify the current status of language descriptions, including easy Japanese, on prefectural government Web pages. The survey method was to record the language tabs of each prefectural government's Web page and to investigate the number of prefectures that had a tab for easy Japanese in their language tabs. There were 47 Prefectural Government Web Pages in Japan observed based on the availability of language options. As a result, we found that 6 Prefectural Government Web Pages had easy Japanese pages. The six web pages were Tochigi Prefecture, Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Yamanashi Prefecture, Hyogo Prefecture, Fukuoka Prefecture, Kagoshima Prefecture. It found that the notation of easy Japanese was different in each prefecture. The results suggest that the easy Japanese web pages are useful not only for children and non-native speakers of Japanese but also for people with disabilities. In the future, it is important to examine whether easy Japanese really functions as easy Japanese and makes it easier to obtain information.

Abstract

Bilingual communication, like translation, generates linguistic events due to interaction with two or more languages. The emergence of interference is one of the consequences of language contact. This study investigates the impact of Indonesian grammar on the translation of relative clauses in Japanese comic strips to examine the types of grammatical errors. This study also analyzes the morphological interference and syntactic interference at the phrase level as a result of the respondent’s translation and investigates the causes, as well as discovers the respondent’s difficulties and strategies during the translation process, particularly relative clauses in Japanese comic strips. A qualitative descriptive approach was used in this study, which data was collected by recording and analyzing the results of a mid-semester exam on comic strip translation for 56 students enrolled in a Japanese-Indonesian translation and interpreting (Honyaku-Tsuyaku) course in their third year. All respondents are proficient in JF Standard Japanese at the B1 level. Google Form questionnaires were distributed to ascertain the respondents’ difficulties and strategies when translating relative clauses. The findings of this study showed that language interference errors are the most prevalent, followed by errors involving word deletions, word additions, incorrect formation of sentence elements, and incorrect placement of components. Thirty translation results were Global Errors, and twenty-six were Local Errors regarding error severity. The results of the questionnaire found that the most significant difficulty was determining the part that is generalizing, determining the order of the translated parts, translating the particle that connects the generalization clause, determining the Subject-Predicate-Object-Description in the sentence, and when translating the demonstrative word that follows the generalization part consecutively.

Abstract

This study examines how Japanese education prepares Indonesians for Japan’s specified skilled worker (SSW) programs. As economic ties between Indonesia and Japan grow, so does the demand for skilled labor in key sectors. Japan’s SSW program aims to attract foreign workers, including Indonesians, to fulfill these needs. Qualitative interviews were conducted with Indonesian sending organizations and candidates in preparatory programs for SSW visas. The research focuses on the Japanese language education framework, its alignment with industry requirements, curriculum development, teaching methodologies, and language proficiency training. The study also evaluates the impact of government policies and bilateral agreements on skilled migration between Indonesia and Japan. It aims to offer insights to policymakers, educators, and stakeholders to enhance educational programs and support mechanisms for better integration into the Japanese labor market. By visiting nearly 60 vocational training institutions licensed to send interns to Japan and several Sending Organizations (SO) with SP3MI permits, the study found that the SSW program has diversified teaching materials and introduced a new curriculum for Japanese language education in Indonesia. However, it has also led to a shortage of instructors in non- academic Japanese learning institutions. Additionally, uncertainty surrounding the language examination has caused many candidates to prefer the TITP over the SSW program. Addressing these issues from a human capital perspective, this study highlights the need for immediate measures such as sector-specific curricula and comprehensive instructor training to improve the quality of SSW candidates, thereby enhancing their experiences in Japan.

Abstract

Making requests (irai) is a genre of spoken interaction that is taught from the basic level of learning Japanese as a foreign language. A request is one of the speech acts that may raise face-threatening potentials. Understanding the stages of request appropriate to Japanese culture is thus essential for Japanese learners to achieve successful conversation. Therefore, conversation pedagogy by using a discourse approach is essential. This study investigates a potential structure gap in Japanese making-requests conversations realized in actual settings and textbook conversational models. By employing genre theory and interpersonal discourse of “Negotiation” as a qualitative discourse analytic method from the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) perspective, this paper describes the gaps and some factors that potentially influence the structure of Japanese making-request conversation. Data were obtained from conversational texts in the Japanese language corpus named Japanese Natural Conversation Corpus and Japanese textbooks for elementary and middle adult learners. Regarding the structure, the results show no difference between conversations in textbooks and authentic ones at the stage level, but both differ at the phase level. There is no introduction to the problem, additional explanation, and confirmation phases in textbook conversational models. In addition, the absence of the phases, the differences in pre-condition content between textbook and authentic conversations, also the length of the reasoning phase, are assumed to be influenced by relational status between participants (tenor) as well as the imposition degree of the requested object.
