Abstract

Perbedaan pandangan di antara mahasiswa penutur bahasa Indonesia dan mahasiswa penutur bahasa Jepang terhadap privasi dalam komunikasi memungkinkan menyebabkan terjadinya gangguan dalam proses berkomunikasi dan mengundang kesalahpahaman. Guna mengurangi gangguan komunikasi dan kesalahpamahan, maka kajian penelitian mengenai privasi dalam komunikasi sangat diperlukan. Penelitian ini mengkaji persamaan dan perbedaan ranah privasi mahasiswa penutur bahasa Indonesia dan mahasiswa penutur bahasa Jepang, siapa saja yang boleh dan tidak boleh mengetahui privasi penutur, dan bagaimana respons penutur terhadap mitra tutur yang membahas topik pembicaraan yang berkaitan dengan privasi. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan teknik survey dengan mendistribusi kuesioner kepada 127 responden di Indonesia dan 107 responden di Jepang. Responden di Indonesia adalah mahasiswa penutur asli bahasa Indonesia dan responden di Jepang adalah mahasiswa mahasiswa penutur asli bahasa Jepang di Jepang. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa penutur bahasa Indonesia lebih terbuka terhadap privasi dibandingkan dengan mahasiswa penutur bahasa Jepang. Kemudian, mahasiswa penutur bahasa Jepang membicarakan privasi terhadap mitra tutur sembari mempertimbangkan apakah penutur dan mitra tutur memiliki hubungan kepercayaan atau tidak. Sedangkan mahasiswa penutur bahasa Indonesia memutuskan akan membicarakan hal yang berkaitan dengan privasi atau tidak dengan mitra tutur setelah memastikan apakah ada hubungan kepercayaan atau tidak.  The different perspectives on privacy between college students who speak Indonesian and those who speak Japanese as their native language may create some misunderstandings when they interact with each other. To avoid such misunderstandings, more studies on privacy in communication are needed. Meanwhile studies on the field are still scarce. Therefore, to fill the gap, this study aims at finding out the similarities and differences on topics that are considered as privacy by students who speak Indonesian language and Japanese language. Additionally, this study also revealed to which interlocutors they may be comfortable to open up talking about topics considered as their privacy and how they respond towards interlocutors who bring up such topics. To collect the data, a questionnaire on privacy was distributed to 127 participants in Indonesia and 107 participants in Japan. Respondents from both countries were college students who were native speakers of the language spoken in their countries, Japan and Indonesia. The data collected then were analyzed by employing contrastive analysis. The study indicated that Indonesian students were more open in comparison to Japanese students as indicated by the breadth of their preferred conversation topics with strangers. Additionally, when opening up to topics considered as private topics, Japanese students were simultaneously evaluating whether they had trusted relationship with the interlocutors throughout the interaction. On the other hand, instead of simultaneously evaluating the relationship, Indonesian students tended to decide whether they had the trusted relationship first before they proceeded to opening up about their privacy with their interlocutors.

Abstract

The situations where both native and non-native speakers participate in a conversation are called contact situations. In these situations, both native and non-native speakers make verbal behaviour adjustments to achieve a smooth conversation. Adjustments by native speakers usually are made in form of Foreigner Talk (FT) while adjustments by non-native speakers made by performing communication strategies (CS). The common point between FT and CS comes from the lack of language ability or resource deficit. However, higher the non-native speakers’ second language proficiency, the adjustments made by both speakers are expected to be more complex. This paper is aiming to investigate those verbal adjustments made by native speakers in the contact situations with advanced learners / non-native speakers. To do it, this paper is employing n-gram method to gain the database of collocation and its occurrence frequency. The data for this research are Nagoya University Conversation Corpus and Nagoya University Japanese Learners Corpus. From the data, this paper found verbal behaviour adjustments which takes form in expressions such are “un” which coined at the end of own utterance, “tokaitte”, and “sounanda”.

Abstract

Neologism are new words, terms or phrase created to apply to new concepts or to make older terminology sound more contemporary. The changing of society reflected in language is the emerging of myriads of neologisms. Japan currently is trying to cope with the aging population, known as aging society. The new words are invented to describe social phenomenon around the aging society in Japan. Considering the influence of social changing and neologisms, it is significant to learn how these new words are created. This study aimed to investigate issues concerning Japanese neologisms in aging society from the perspectives of characteristics, definition and social connotations. List of aging society neologisms is developed by looking in academic articles, scholarly books and online sources. The result shows that aging society neologisms created by combining existing words, borrowing, abbreviation and by rhyming with existing words or simply playing with sounds. Japanese aging society neologisms are the language mirror to reflect social phenomenon that the public concerns most. The study of neologisms is also a valuable tool to understand social cultural changes and improve communicative and cultural competence of the Japanese learners.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the character of one of the main characters, Honami in the Holy Mother novel. The data source in this study is the Holy Mother novel wrote by Japanese author Akiyoshi Rikako,which has been published in Indonesia in 2016. The technique used for data collection in this study is library techniques. The method usedin conducting this research was the psychoanalysis method which was first put forward by Sigmund Freud. The results showed that based on psychoanalytic studies, the main character of the novel,a woman namedHonami, showed that the Id aspectinfluences all of herthoughts and actions. This was triggered by various events, namely herown misfortune which had many miscarriages and had a disease that made it difficult for herto get pregnant, and Kaoru's existence that changed herlife to became more meaningful. The emergence of fear and concern for her daughter because of the successive killings that struck a small child in the city where she lived, making her falsify and obscure the fact that Makoto, wascommitted murder to protect her daughter. The results also showed thatthe personality of the main character, Honami, is dominated by an element of the Egopersonality that defeats the Superego.

Abstract

Japanese has different characteristics from other foreign languages including having kana letters, kanji and romaji. The kana letters include hiraganaand katakana. The katakanaletters are used to write loan word from foreign languages into Japanese. The names from outside Japan are also written using katakana. This study discusses about the writing of names of cities in Java island into Japanese katakanawhich contained in Japanese version of Google Maps. The aims of this study are to know how google.map.jp write the names of cities in Java island using Japanese katakanaand what pattern did they use to write those city’s names. The analysis conducted by using descriptive method. The results of this study revealed that in Japanese version of Google Map, there are 62 city names written in katakana, while the rest are written in romaji. There are eight patterns found in writing the name of the cities using katakana. Those are including writing katakanabased on Hepburnstyle using the KVKV pattern, adding vowels to each closed syllable sound, writing “r” for the sound of “l”, and syllable “ci” written as “chi (チ)” or “shi (シ)”.

Abstract

In Japan, loanwords widely used in newspapers that make it difficult for readers to understand the information. As there is a need for a practical language, it has been proven by the more dominant use of abbreviations. In newspapers, abbreviations in loanwords are most commonly found in the field of automotive technology, but the use of abbreviations in newspaper must be taken into consideration, as it may be difficult to deliver the information. This study was arranged with the aim to find out, describe and analyse the formation of loanwords in ryakugoand toujigoform in the Asahi Shimbun Digitalwebsite. It is intended for Japanese learners to have a basic knowledge of the formation structure of the Japanese loanwords and to know the abbreviations and meanings of the automotive and technology fields term. The method used in this study is a descriptive qualitative analysis. The results of this study were obtained 79 data of ryakugoand toujigo, which in the formation of ryakugo were jouryaku, geryaku, and jougeryaku. While the formation of toujigo were keeping the first letter written with alphabet, keeping the first letter written with alpha-numeric, keeping the front–middle- in the first word and keeping two letters in the first word.

Abstract

Japanese Language considered as an HC (high context) language. It means that the context of communication is essential in socio-cultural discourses regarding Japanese language use. Nishijima (2007) stated that communicative behaviors are different in every language because of its’socio-cultural background. Japanese is a language that often considers other people’s feeling, especially interlocutor’s. This paper aims to analyze and explain how Japanese native speaker and Indonesian Japanese learners giving an explanation or reason ina refusal situation. The data in this study collected through DiscourseCompletion Test (DCT), consisting a single role-play situation which participant will read to elicit the response from another participant. The participants in this study including 16 Japanese Native Speakers (JNS) and 20 Indonesian Japanese Learners (IJL). The results of this study suggested that both JNS and IJL tend to explain their reason in a refusal situation based on the socio-cultural background in their language. JNS tend to make an excuse for the things that they can not do and ask if it may make their interlocutor in trouble because of their incapability. On the other hand, Indonesian tend to make an excuse because they feel they are incapable of doing the request.
