Abstract

The ability to create an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for inclusive Early Childhood Education (ECE) teachers is a matter that needs to be further studied. At present, there are still many teachers who still need to be prepared with sufficient knowledge to create a proper IEP. The ability to create an ideal IEP can be useful for teachers in the implementation of an ideal inclusive ECE. An ideal inclusive ECE can serve as an indicator of the quality of education of a nation. The objective of this research is to analyze the effect of teacher's self-efficacy and teacher's literacy on Education for Children with Special Needs on the ability to design an IEP. The study uses a path analysis involving 50 ECE teachers from 50 different schools in East Jakarta. This study applied a simple random sampling technique to involve teachers. The results of this study revealed: 1) There was no direct effect on teacher self-efficacy towards the ability to design an IEP; 2) There was a direct effect on teacher literacy towards the ability to make an IEP; 3) There was no direct effect on teacher's self-efficacy towards the teacher's literacy on Education for Children with Special Needs.

Abstract

This research was conducted to determine the initial literacy activities carried out by parents, family members, and caregivers at home. The research method used for this study is a systematic review that is implemented by capturing articles concerned in the research topic published between 2009–2019 through two electronic search engines, Science Direct and Sage Journals. Furthermore, article extractions were carried out to filter out articles that were relevant to the research question (n = 9) with five articles with mother-child participants, 1 article with caregiver-child participants, and three articles with mother or father-child participants. Data analysis in this study is done by narrative synthesis analysis. The results of this study show several activities, i.e., shared reading or book reading, grocery games, writing letters, spelling, drawing pictures, and writing spontaneously. The most popular activity is the shared reading or reading book, which has more impact on the type of book and parent involvement. Limitations and recommendations for future research are discussed in this paper.

Abstract

This research aims to develop thematic-based physical education teaching materials that aim to introduce motions to children and help teachers as a guide to teach physical education. The following teaching material contains physical games that are integrated with the theme and are equipped with ways to maintain cleanliness (both for the self and the environment) and handling injuries during playtime. The research method is Research and Development (R&D), with the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implement, dan Evaluation) model involving several PAUD teachers in the Lampung Province. The results of the research from the validation of the material experts found an average of 3.8, which means the product is very feasible to use. The validation of media experts gets an average of 3.09, which means that the media is appropriate to use. Ratings from users on small-scale trials get an average of 2.60 which means they generally agree on the usage of said materials. Large-scale trials get an average value of 3.45, which means that they strongly agree on its usage. These results indicate that the thematic-based physical education teaching materials are specifically "very feasible to use" and it is expected for the teachers to use them as early childhood learning materials.

Abstract

Choosing a career as an Early Childhood Education Teacher is both challenging and joyful. Not everyone is interested in this profession except for those who have strong motivation. This study aims to identify students’ exact motivation to select the Early Childhood Education Department at Public University. This study uses combined qualitative and quantitative methods (exploratory mixed methods design). Sources of qualitative data were taken from twenty informants through in-depth interviews and analyzed using NVivo 10 analysis software, while sources of quantitative data were taken from a hundred correspondents and analyzed using SPSS 20 software. Both qualitative and quantitative data analyses showed that students have seven motivations to select the Early Childhood Education Department. Those seven motivations are: i) parents encouragement (81%); ii) job opportunities after graduation (83%); iii) loving kids (85%); iv) teaching is a noble profession (100%); self-will (70%); vi) the choice to be a teacher (76%); and vii) Early Childhood Education is not difficult, but joyful (80%). The study has successfully revealed seven students’ motivations for selecting the Early Childhood Education Department at Public University. This study’s results can be used as preliminary data for subsequent researchers to examine this problem in different contexts and issues. This study’s findings need to be continued by the next researcher by examining the correlation between motivational aspects with various other variables. However, this data can also be used as an initial reference for examining the issues and problems in different contexts.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the concept of Early Childhood Education offered by various educational figures to impact the emergence of increasingly dynamic educational theories. Issues on this concept did not escape the attention of Abdurrahman An-Nahlawi and Maria Montessori. The two figures have similarities and differences in their underlying points of view and approaches, and these cannot be separated from the philosophical study behind them. Based on the above, this study explores the two figures’ thoughts to give birth to a new paradigm of education for early childhood. The research method used was a literature study by collecting various references that can support research. From the research results, it can be found that, philosophically, the concept of Early Childhood Education, according to Abdurrahman An-Nahlawi, is attached to the perennial normative approach, while Maria Montessori’s notion is more towards a constructivism approach. The two approaches have different points of view in highlighting the educational side. The similarity in the points of view of these two figures is an understanding of the concept of education, which should be integrated and contextual, and position the child as the main subject in education.

Abstract

The curriculum is an absolute thing that must be owned by a teaching unit. The curriculum is the core of the learning process. Az-Zahwa Playgroup Trenggalek has five teachers with high-school educational background and has never received training or workshops. This condition has an impact on the course during the learning process. The learning process runs without a plan, and the activities taken during the learning process was not appropriate to the children's age. This research aims to describe the strategies in increasing teacher competence, especially in pedagogic and professionalism based on structured-mentoring. In this research, the structured-mentoring was conducted by providing alternately structured materials and practice using prepared learning-tools appropriate to curriculum 2013. This type of research was qualitative with a case-study design. The data were collected using observations, interviews, and documentation. This research's inhibiting factor was that the teachers have a high-school educational background and have not had teaching experience, resulting in a lack of knowledge and teaching skills. On the other hand, the supporting factor was that teachers were enthusiastic and creative in developing the learning tools based on local culture. The results achieved from this structured-monitoring research were the teachers were able to make the learning-tools start from PROTA, PROMES, RPPM, RPPH according to 2013 Curriculum based on local culture and ended by generating the score by using work-result oriented techniques, checklist, portfolio, and anecdotal notes.
