Abstract

Febrile seizures are common neurological disorders in pediatric patients and usually affect children between 6 months and five years, peaking in 14 to 18 months. Mothers have a vital role in ensuring their family’s well-being. However, they often cannot contribute significantly to febrile seizure prevention and treatment at home due to the lack of knowledge and awareness. Therefore, we need to provide a promotive and preventive program for febrile seizures to the mothers at Medan Barat District, Medan, Sumatera Utara. This activity aims to reduce the incidence of febrile seizures in Indonesia. We delivered the program in several stages, from basic data collection, lectures, febrile seizure prevention, early management at-home training, evaluation, and guidebook handover. Twenty-nine people attended this program, twenty women (72.4%) and nine men (27.6%). No significant change was found in the level of knowledge and behavior before and after the activity (Z-score: 0,001; p= 1,000).

Abstract

Sanitation is one of the fundamental human rights aspects. Neglected sanitation development can have a broad impact, especially for health. Stopping open defecation is a major pillar that greatly affects public health, because this problem concerns environmental health issues that will have a broad impact on public health and a decrease in environmental quality. Environmental and sanitation quality degradation is a complex problem that occurs in Indonesia, including in Samosir Regency. There are still several villages that do not use latrines. Based on this, the community service team collaborated with the Samosir District Health Office to empower the community, among others, by providing counseling on environmental sanitation and inviting and motivating people to use the latrines provided and build latrines for those who do not. owning latrines through the construction of pilot latrines. It has been facilitated 16 goose neck latrines and 2 bags of cement for the 16 families who do not have latrines. The residents have been building and using pilot latrines. With this pilot latrine, it is hoped that it can increase the awareness of residents to change their habit of defecating so that later it can become a defecation-free village and improve the community's health status.

Abstract

Healthy environmental sanitation and good nutrition are factors that determine human resources and quality of life. With healthy environmental sanitation, the community is protected from various infectious diseases and similarly with a good understanding of nutrition will produce individuals with good quality. For this reason, it is important to achieve resources and good quality of life. This understanding is enhanced by providing health education. and good nutrition so that people are protected from various diseases. Health matters are matters of the environment, attitudes and behavior of the community. One of the causes of this nutritional deficiency is stunting, namely short stature in which a child who is stunted produces a low level of intelligence. For this reason, it is necessary to educate the public to understand the importance of good nutrition for children's growth. There is a wrong perception in the general public that stature is a hereditary factor, not a factor in malnutrition so that they do not pay attention to the nutritional status of children. Wrong choice of food for consumption, as well as nutritional balance between intake and output of substances (nutritional imbalance), namely intake that exceeds output or vice versa is the result of nutritional problems that occur in toddlers. This causes several impacts, including chronic disease, overweight and underweight, pica, dental caries, and allergies. For this reason, in this case the community service team wants to provide education about counseling to the community where the targets to be carried out are pregnant women, school children and young women. During the Covid 19 pandemic, the targets we educate are through cadres and village officials, this is to avoid infection with the covid 19 virus. By providing counseling to cadres and village officials, we hope that it will reach the people of Sigapiton village. Where in this counseling we provide pocket books to the cadres and village officials that we educate. We hope that this service can increase public knowledge about nutrition understanding and the creation of healthy environmental sanitation. We will publish the output of this service in an international journal indexed by Scopus

Abstract

Cancer in Indonesia is the number seven cause of death with a percentage of 5.7 percent of all causes of death. In North Sumatra, the prevalence of cancer in the population of all ages has increased, in 2013 it was 1 percent. How to detect cancer can be done with the Intra Visual Infection Test of Acetic Acid (IVA). The IVA test can be done at the Puskesmas, but in Medan City WUS who carry out the IVA test only reaches 30% of the target set. In the Women's District of Medan City, the IVA test problem at WBP is still low. They do not know the benefits of the test even though they know that cervical cancer is a deadly cancer. For this reason, WBP Empowerment regarding cervical cancer was carried out to WUS in Medan City Women's Prison. This empowerment aims to increase the knowledge, attitudes and actions of WBP in cervical cancer which is carried out through video media that has been designed with the title Early Introduction to Cervical Cancer with the IVA Test. In this pandemic situation, the community service team provided 2 sinks for washing hands and masks as a form of COVID-19 prevention.

Abstract

Vocabulary learning plays an important role in learning English, especially in elementary schools which emphasize English learning on vocabulary mastery. However, vocabulary learning often makes elementary school students feel bored because they are assigned to memorize as many English words as possible while they sometimes do not understand the meaning of the words. Therefore, teachers should find several possible techniques that can attract students’ attention and bring out their motivation, one of which is using games, such as the karuta game. This paper aims at describing how the karuta game is implemented in teaching vocabulary and how it enhances the elementary school students’ vocabulary mastery. This is a descriptive study taking the elementary school students living in Sidomulyo of Sibiru Biru Sub-District, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra, as the participants. The data were collected using observations and interviews and were analyzed qualitatively. The results show that (i) the karuta game is easy to use because it does not have a complicated rule; furthermore, it is flexible because it can be modified in several ways following the vocabulary intended to introduce; (ii) the karuta game benefits the students in bringing up their motivation in learning English vocabulary, providing them a comprehensive conceptual meaning of each vocabulary, and improving their pronunciation. It is concluded that the karuta game is a good technique in enhancing elementary school students’ vocabulary mastery.

The nuggets that have been made from chicken and vegetables have not utilized local potentials with high nutritional content and are relatively cheap, namely Cencaru fish and yellow sweet potato. Yellow Sweet Potatoes contain nutrients that are good in energy, protein, carbohydrates, fats, calcium, phosphorus and iron. In Babalan Subdistrict, Langkat Regency, many fish products have not been used optimally in an effort to improve the nutritional status of the community. One of the fish that is cheap but is less attractive to the community while its availability is a lot of cencaru fish (Megalaspis cordyla). In this area there are women who process snacks such as nuggets, noodles, but not yet varied. For this reason, women's empowerment was carried out in producing nuggets and yellow sweet potato cakes and cencaru fish. Through increasing the knowledge and skills of women in producing nuggets and yellow sweet potato cakes and cencaru fish, they become healthy, highly nutritious, inexpensive and cheap school food snacks, starting from production, packaging and marketing. Based on this, the activities of women's empowerment services in the manufacture of nugget and yellow sweet potato and cencaru fishes increase the knowledge and skills of partners in processing nugget and yellow sweet potato and cencaru fish cakes.

Abstract

Covid-19 is an outbreak of a new disease that already exists and has become a pandemic. This disease is caused by a new type of corona virus named SARS-CoV-2. During the global pandemic, one of the cheapest, easiest and most important ways to prevent the spread of the virus is to wash your hands frequently with soap and water. The most prominent problem at UPT SD Negeri 064023, Kelurahan Kemenangan Tani, Medan Tuntung District, Medan is the low level of education about the importance of washing hands with soap and the unavailability of facilities for students to wash their hands with soap in running water. This service provides facilities for washing hands with soap in running water and education about breaking the chain of transmission of COVID-19 and how to wash hands with soap properly. Educational activities in elementary schools are carried out through teachers and staff in elementary schools because school children are still learning from home. They are the ones who will deliver the education to students through online lessons or when the children return to study at school. The provision of 2 handwashing basins in schools is very useful to be used as a forum for health protocol actions to break the chain of covid transmission 19. The school principal is grateful and states that he is ready to cooperate for further community service activities
