Abstract

The successful resolution of challenges faced during the implementation of the National Slum Upgrading (KOTAKU) Program in Gajah Wong Riverbank area, marked by initial resistance from affected communities, was achieved through the inclusive engagement of diverse community elements and collaborating agencies. This intricate interplay among stakeholders has a profound influence on the program’s effectiveness. This study aims to unravel the dynamic relationships forged among various agencies and community components within the conflict management framework, ultimately enhancing program implementation. To attain this objective, a qualitative methodology employing a case study approach was utilized. The investigation revealed that the local government, in executing the National Slum Upgrading (KOTAKU), fostered collaboration with other governmental entities through a synergistic alignment of related programs. Reinforcing the program through the utilization of complementary initiatives contributed to achieving program objectives without resource constraints. The synergy among agencies was bolstered by optimizing existing social institutions within the community as active program implementers. This, in turn, positively influenced the processes of identification, socialization, and coordination, ensuring their effectiveness. Furthermore, the active involvement of the local community played a pivotal role in addressing challenges and overcoming initial resistance. The application of a persuasive socialization model effectively conveyed the program’s significance in improving the residents’ welfare, thereby fostering acceptance. This collaborative pattern depicts a synergistic model aligning policy maker interests with community needs, characterized by a continuous spectrum of participation and empowerment.

Abstract

Enhancing production activities in Desa Kolot, Cikalong Tasikmalaya is achieved through mutually beneficial partnerships among traders, exemplifying a community-driven empowerment model. This approach is introduced as a response to counter the negative perceptions associated with interventionist empowerment strategies implemented by head of village. The objective of this research is to uncover the interconnected pattern involving traders with ample capital collaborating with those lacking financial resources. Employing a qualitative methodology with a phenomenological approach, the data analysis utilizes the patron-client theory. The study identifies the effectiveness of an empowerment model that optimizes the local potential of traditional snack production, deeply rooted in the community’s traditions. The empowerment mechanism is executed through voluntary connections established between major traders providing capital and smaller traders contributing culinary products. Small traders, as beneficiaries, get provision of materials, production tools, and skill enhancements offered by larger traders. Similarly, major traders benefit by gaining access to a market for the product of culinary, thereby expanding their customer base. These personal, voluntary, and tradition-bound relationships reflect dyadic connections characterized by an imbalance, potentially leading to domination and exploitation.

Abstract

The lack of awareness regarding the management of household waste, particularly hazardous and toxic waste, poses a significant threat to environmental pollution. This lack of awareness is exacerbated by the accumulation and mixing of such waste with other categories of household waste. This study aims to mitigate the impact of household waste through an assistance mechanism designed to alter waste management behavior. Employing a quasi-experimental method, the research was conducted within the community of Pasirkaliki Village, North Cimahi. The study revealed significant changes in both the knowledge and behavior of the community towards waste management. Post-intervention, there was a notable increase of 16.6% in the community's knowledge compared to pre-intervention measurements. Furthermore, individuals who initially exhibited poor knowledge of waste types showed a remarkable 55.6% increase in understanding. The enhanced knowledge positively correlated with changes in behavior, evidenced by the increased community agreement on sorting waste based on its categories. This behavioral change was attributed to the intervention, supported by a p-value of 0.002. The results underscore the effectiveness of the assistance provided, which involved identifying community tendencies and employing direct involvement to enable individuals to experience the benefits firsthand through education.
