Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the function of references within Selena Gomez's Billboard Woman of the Year speech through a comprehensive analysis. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method, with data obtained from a YouTube video posted by the Global TV team on December 2, 2018. To analyze the data, this research utilizes discourse analysis theory from Halliday and Hasan (2013). The study focuses on identifying types of references and what grammatical cohesion is found in each type of reference within the framework of discourse analysis. The distribution of found references is as follows: 49 (35.8%) data for anaphoric reference, 16 (11.7%) for cataphoric reference, and 5 (3.6%) for exophoric reference. In terms of grammatical cohesion, the data are distributed as follows: 32 (23.4%) data for pronouns, 33 (24.1%) for lexical cohesion, and 1 (0.7%) for ellipsis. The study employs systemic functional linguistics (SFL) to delve into speech functions, emphasizing the importance of grammar and language in effective communication. By examining Selena Gomez's speech, the research aims to uncover underlying meanings and cultural influences embedded in her references. Discourse analysis, as a tool, allows for a broader understanding of language's role in society communication, particularly within the realm of celebrity culture. Abstract

Portfolio assessment has been the focus of several EFL classroom research studies. However, this study is carried out to explore the development, implementation and both teachers and students’ perceptions of portfolio assessment at university and school level in Indonesian EFL writing context. Five hundred and Fifty-Five (n=555) journal articles were searched through different search engines, only thirty-seven (n=37) recent and relevant publications published between years 2012 to 2022 were met the criteria and included in this study and remaining are excluded. Among inclusions, there were twenty-one (n=21) qualitative research, twelve (n=12) quantitative, two (n=2) mix-mode, and two (n=2) review paper. The overall respondents of the studies were one thousand and fifty (n=1050). The findings of this research reveal that the use of portfolio assessment for assessing student writing had a significant positive effect and was able to improve students' writing skills. In accordance with their perceptions, both teachers and students responded well to portfolio assessment. They agreed that it is essential to use this portfolio for writing in the EFL classroom since it generates substantial results throughout the writing process. Then, the development of the assessment portfolio in Indonesia has continued to progress in parallel with technological advances. The portfolio assessment tool, which is typically a paper-based portfolio, has started to transform into electronic portfolio. By using e-portfolios, both students and teachers may evaluate writing more flexibly via digital platforms that are accessible anytime and anywhere. Abstract

The research aims to identify the types of code-mixing and the factors that affect the use of code-mixing in the movie Ali and Ratu Ratu Queens (2021) by analyzing the characters' dialogues. The research uses qualitative analysis to determine the types and factors of code mixing contained in the dialogues of the characters in the film. The findings of this study indicate types of code mixing according to Hoffman's theory–such as intra-lexical code-mixing, intra-sentential code-mixing, and involving a change of pronunciation–have appeared several times in the movie. In conclusion, the research underscores the complexity of code mixing in multilingual contexts portrayed in the movie, providing insights for further sociolinguistic studies. Abstract

This is a study of the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI), especially in language learning and teaching, especially in the 2021 stages. AI has taken significant roles in learning activities that focus on student-centered learning, namely the customization of the learning speed, direct feedback, and assessment which have benefited their intended users. It has also addressed language learning-teaching challenges, including pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, cultural differences, and motivation. However, some issues need to be addressed and regulated to ensure the safe and effective use: privacy and security of the user, technical expertise, bias, cultural sensitivity, a lack of human interaction, ethical considerations, and over-reliance on technology. Furthermore, the benefits and limitations have yet to be determined based on their dominance or balance: On one side, AI enables the learners to decide how they want to learn, while the instructors have a virtual assistant to construct curricula, materials, and assessments. On the other hand, its impact on the students in general in other learning aspects must also be considered. Therefore, it is essential to investigate further its effectiveness in how One approach is to integrate AI-based language learning tools with traditional language instruction, providing learners with a comprehensive and balanced language learning experience. For example, AI-based tools can provide learners targeted instruction and feedback on specific aspects of language use. In contrast, traditional language instruction can provide learners with opportunities for authentic language use and interaction with native speakers and peers (Lambelet & Chassot, 2019). Abstract

This research focuses to analyze adjacency pairs in the selected Korean Englishman YouTube Video titled “K-Pop Idol NCT Johnny fed us luxury Korean Beef BBQ!” using Yule’s (1996) theory. This study is using the qualitative descriptive method to analyze the data. From the conversation uttered by speakers, there are some patterns that they automatically produced, called adjacency pairs. The adjacency pairs occur when two or more people talk and respond to each other’s questions. Based on the analysis, there are 25 adjacency pairs; (15) Question–Answer, (1) Command–Compliance, (1) Request–Acceptance, (1) Offer–Acceptance, (5) Assessment–Agreement, (2) Suggestion–Acceptance that were found in the conversation between Johnny, Josh, and Ollie in the Korean Englishman YouTube video titled “K-Pop Idol NCT Johnny fed us luxury Korean Beef BBQ!”. From all the data found in this study, the functions of utterances are in accordance with each type of adjacency pair thus conclude that adjacency pairs are automatic sequences of two utterances produced by two speakers with the second utterances conversing about the first utterance.
