Abstract

The aim of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of cooperative learning in improving students’ L2 willingness to write in creative writing. To assess the effectiveness of the instrument in the study, classroom action research is the method that will be used to measure in student learning or achievement as a result of an intervention, a pre-test and post-test are commonly used instrument in classroom action research. The study’s finding revealed that the classroom action research group’s L2 willingness to write in creative writing improved significantly after the cycle of cooperative learning instruction. The findings support cooperative learning’s effectiveness in improving students’ L2 willingness to write in creative writing. According to the findings, incorporating cooperative learning into language instruction is a promising approach for improving writing skills in the L2 context. Abstract

The aim of this study to describe the image contained in the poem "Daddy" by Sylvia Plath. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive. Data collection used the technique of reading logs of the poem "Daddy" by Sylvia Plath. The research result were visual imagery, auditory imagery, pictures No aesthetic and magical. Conclusion from results of imagery analysis carried out on the poem "Daddy" by Sylvia Plath is that the most dominant image is visual imagery. Keywords: Analysis, Imagery, Literature, Poetry

Abstract

This study aims to describe the translation strategy applied to translate the lyrics of the song "Water Under the Bridge" from English to Indonesian (https://translation-lirik-lagu-barat.blogspot.com/2015/12/water-under -bridge-adele.html) and to explain the quality of the translation in terms of correctness and acceptance of its meaning according to the original text. The method used is descriptive qualitative research; the data and data sources are the results of translating the song lyrics, and the research instruments used are documents and questionnaires. The research results show that based on the information data, the strategy used in the process of translating is a phonemic translation (25%), verse into process translation (25%), and interpretation (25%), which is often used in translating Adele's songs. It can be concluded that the method used is more oriented towards the target language because the use of translation techniques is more oriented towards the use of the target language. The overall results of the translation quality of songs in the accuracy category are inaccurate (1%), less accurate (33%), and accurate (66%). Meanwhile, the acceptability category is inaccurate (2%), less accurate (43%), and accurate (55%). So, the quality of the translation in the category of accuracy and acceptability of the translation is good according to the target language. Abstract

The thesis aims to describe illocutionary speech acts of verbal bullying from a children’s literature entitled the Big Friendly Giant written by Roald Dahl. The research was designed as a qualitative study and applied content analysis. The used instruments were the tables contained illocutionary speech acts indicating verbal bullying and self-esteem. The data formed in the narrative quotations, which those were analyzed with applying Searle’s illocutionary speech acts. Verbal bullying were classified into six types, such as insulting, reviling, calling by bad name, public shaming, spreading gossip, and accusing. Furthermore, the data were connected with the issue of self-esteem having five senses proposed by Reasoners, such as sense of security, identity, belonging, purpose, and competence. The results indicated that two main figures experienced four of six verbal bullying types, such as insulting consisting of 19 utterances, or 73% of whole data, 1 datum of reviling (5.3%), 5 data of calling by bad names (19%), and 1 of accusing (5.3%). Meanwhile, the data of self-esteem informed 1 utterance of sense of identity (7%), belonging (2 utterances or 15%), purpose (5 utterances, 36%), and competence (6 utterances or 43%). In conclusion, the Big Friendly Giant can be recommended as English subject material because of providing a unique illustration for school students in dealing with verbal bullying which motivates them to erecttheir better future. Abstract

Teachers and students play a key role in the successful integration of ICT into learning English. ICT-based learning will only succeed if teachers and students have a positive attitude towards practice. In this context, an empirical picture of teacher-student perceptions is essential as a basis for integrating ICT into the learning process. The aims of this study are to explore and analyse students' and teachers’ perceptions, students and teachers’ challenges, and benefits for teaching and learning toward the use of ICT in Teaching English at BTA 70 course To explore and analyse students’ perceptions toward the use of ICT in Teaching English at BTA 70 course. This study was mixed method study. This study used survey research in conducting the research exactly cross-sectional survey. There are 416 students and 15 teachers who became samples in this study and to get the sample The writer used purposive random sampling. The writer used a questionnaire for collecting the data. They are closed ended questionnaires adopted in Chainda A. M (2011). The results of this research, the students’ perception showed there positive aspects for students such as making students can share information, enhance students’ learning, and doing science experiments safely, for negative aspects consuming students’ time and irrelevant information which students got on the internet. And students’ attitude showed the students agree the use of ICT is effective in learning. Then, The use of ICT gave students obstacles where the obstacles became the challenges for students itself. The challenges for the students themselves, irrelevant information and time management are challenges for the students in learning by using ICT. It can be concluded if there are benefits of ICT in the learning process. Such as, ICT helps the students to improve, and also the students can learn individually. Abstract

This study aims to discover how students experienced their learning anxiety in using English grammar in vocational high schools. This study used a descriptive quantitative method with 36 vocational high students of the eleventh grade in the areas of West Java and Jakarta as the participants in which the data include the participants' perspectives on their learning anxiety of grammar use in English learning. Based on the results, as many as 15% of students experienced a lack of motivation, 49% experienced insecurity, and 37% of students did not understand English grammar. As a result, students experienced significant learning anxiety while using the English language in a discourse without having a strong command of the language. It is then recommended that this study enable vocational high school students and teachers to find solutions to anxiety about using English in order that students can learn English grammar without anxiety or having fears. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the use of the Padlet application had a significant impact on the writing ability of Tenth grade students at SMA Yadika Bandar Lampung. In this study, the researchers uses quantitative research. The study technique employed a quasi-experimental design, and the therapy consisted of three encounters. The basic skills of the pupils are ascertained through a pre-test in this approach prior to therapy. The study's target demographic was the tentth grade at SMA Yadika Bandar Lampung. Science One and Science Two were the two courses from which the samples were obtained. The author uses testing tools to construct descriptive stories about historical sites to collect data for pre-testing and post-testing. The findings indicated that the outcomes of creating descriptive prose were impacted by the Padlet application. The increase in the average score obtained from the pre-test results from 60.15 to 78.09 in the post-test results proves this. The results of hypothesis testing, which is 0.000 less than the Sig value of 0.05, also supports it. In other words, the Padlet application affects the students at SMA Yadika Bandar Lampung in the tenth grade's descriptive text writing skills Keywords: Descriptive Text, Padlet Application, Writing Ability

Abstract

The use of Online translation (OT) for doing English assignments is now inevitable. Teachers neither can prevent their students to use OT nor can supervise it when all of the learning process has been running online from home to home. Therefore, both teachers and students should bring out the advantages of OT to improve English competence and to reduce the disadvantages of using OT. This study is aimed to investigate the students’ perspectives of using OT for doing English assignments and to describe the advantages and disadvantages of OT. The study is presented in descriptive qualitative design. The data collection instruments are questionnaires and open-ended questions. The participants are 198 students of Information system department, University of Putra Indonesia YPTK Padang. The findings of this study showed that for about 80% of English students depend their English assignments on OT. Based on the EFL students’ perspective, the advantages of using OT are time saver and instant results and the disadvantages of using OT are inaccuracy in the results relate to cultural context, idiom, sentences with metaphor and pragmatic aspects for learning the structure of English language. The study proposes some ideas for teachers to teach their students strategies and guidance for using OT properly and to avoid making mistakes. Abstract

This research project investigated the use of DI by teachers and confirmed their practices to learn more about teachers' perceptions using a qualitative approach. Four research instruments were used to collect data in this investigation: document analyses, classroom observations, questionnaires, and interviews. Document analyses and classroom observations were employed to obtain data concerning teachers' actual practices of DI. In the meantime, a questionnaire has been used to obtain data on teachers' perceptions and practices regarding DI. Finally, interviews have also been conducted to determine teachers' perceptions of DI. The result of the study revealed that the participants exhibited high proficiency in using DI strategies in their classrooms. The assessment considered various dimensions, including understanding DI concepts and objectives, adapting instruction to diverse student needs, evaluating students through diagnostic assessments, and aligning teaching strategies with individual learning profiles. However, there was room for improvement, especially in tailoring instruction based on diverse learning profiles. Furthermore, the English teachers' perceptions of DI significantly shaped their instructional practices. While there was a solid theoretical understanding and commitment to personalized instruction, practical challenges and systemic constraints impacted the seamless integration of DI principles. The teachers' commitment to addressing these challenges, demonstrated through varied instructional practices, underscored the dynamic interplay between perceptions and the complex reality of implementing DI in the classroom. Abstract

This research analyzes three news items on the Kompas.com site related to the installation of Puan Maharani's billboards installed around the Mount Semeru evacuation using the Appraisal Theory. Appraisal theory is relate about an interpersonal system in linguistics that focuses on negotiating social relations about one's assessment of something. This study used qualitative documentation as research design. For data collection techniques used reading and searching for news techniques, selecting research data news according to the formulation of the problem and research objectives, then conducting a language analysis of news taken from Kompas.com using appraisal which focus on attitude. Then the data are processed to be able to classify appraisal attitude according to the category. So the writer found as many as eight data including the appraisal attitude of the affect category found there were two data. As for appraisal attitude in the judgment category, six data were found. So from the three news reports, a negative assessment was found from the public because they discussed morality and the normality of Puan's billboards at Mount Semeru refuge. Those many thought that Puan wanted to increase her popularity and electability for the 2024 general election by taking advantage of the disaster situation.
