Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to find out the students’ abilty in writing hortatory exposition text at class XI SMA YLPI Perhentian Marpoyan Pekanbaru. This research was conducted on April to May 2010. The sample of the research was the students of class XI SMA YLPI Perhentian Marpoyan Pekanbaru. There were 76 students as the sample of the research. They were class XI IPS1, XI IPS2 and XI IPA. The instrument of the research was the writing test that required the students to write a hortatory exposition text. The test was analyzed by two different raters. It can be concluded that level of ability of the second year students of SMA YLPI Perhentian Marpoyan pekanbaru in writing hortatory exposition text was in mediocre level 55.26% (21 students). Key word: The Students’ Ability, Writing, Hortatory Exposition Text.

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to find out students’ writing motivation in hortatory exposition by using\ POW plus TREE strategy. The research was carried out at the eleventh grade students at SMAN 1 Bukit Batu This research was quantitative research. The population in this study was 26 students who were taken randomly.  A set of questionnaire was distributed to 26 students regarding their motivation on writing hortatory exposition by using POW plus TREE strategy. In this research, measurement of these statements using 30 statements in questionnaire based on indicators to assess students’ motivation in writing hortatory exposition. The data collected was analyzed using SPSS 22 to know the normality, validity, and reliability of the instrument. The researcher measured the total score from the result of the students’ motivation in writing ability test. The results of this study showed that students had goodmotivation in writing hortatory exposition by using POW plus TREE strategy. Keywords: Motivation, writing, hortatory exposition, POW plus TREE.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to investigate students’ perceptions of English oral communication usage during their practice learning program. This research was quantitative and qualitative research. The population in this study was semester 7 (seven) students of English Study Program of STAIN Bengkalis. A set of questionnaire was distributed to 25 students regarding their perceptions on oral communication usage during their practice learning program and a face to face interview was carried out to 6 students. In this research, measurement of these statements using the Likert scale ranging from 1 = Strongly Disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Undecided, 4 = Agree and 5 = Strongly Agree. The data collected was analyzed using SPSS 22 to know the normality, validity, and reliability of the instrument. The results of this study showed that students had positive perceptions on English oral communication usage during their practice learning program.

Abstract

Abstract—This research was conducted to investigate the significant differences of SMCP Application through  English for Maritime ability students. By conducting quasi experimental research, the write tries to know whether SMCP Application is effective in helping maritime students in learning English for maritime. This research was quasi experimental research. The sample was taken by purposive sampling. There were 27 students from Nautical Study program and 26 students from Port and Management study program. The data of this research were the results of students’ English test. After conducting pre-test and post-test, the average of gained score was 17.66. The students who taught by SMCP Application have higher score in post-test than pre-test. Since t-observed = 8.33 was higher than t-table = 1.645, it means that Ha was accepted. The result of this research was students who are taught by SMCP have better English ability than those who are taught by conventional teaching. In conclusion, SMCP can be used as a teaching technique in teaching English for Maritime.

Abstract

Abstract: English mastery requires students to have sufficient knowledge about four skills, namely listening, speaking, writing and reading. In addition, other knowledge such as grammar is crucial too. Regarding grammar, students often get difficulty to use English accurately. This descriptive study aimed at finding out students’ ability in selecting correct troublesome verbs. The study result showed that the level of students’ ability was at mediocre level, 44.72. Furthermore, it showed that the highest score obtained by the students was 65, while the lowest score was 30. For the classification of troublesome verb, the most difficult was to differentiate the use of “bring and take” where 6 students (33.33%) were in very poor level.Keywords: Study, students’ ability, troublesome verbs

Abstract

The success of teaching needs to consider what strategy should be used to identify an effective way for students to absorb the material. These could be the main priority in the teaching process done by teachers involving teaching English to review their failure in the past, which tend to emphasize the role of a teacher in teaching and learning process what so-called teacher-centered. In the next phase to provide alternative solution, there is a contextual teaching and learning as an approach which adopts various strategies and makes students have an opportunity to be more explorative and thoughtful to learn in class as well as put them as the actor in learning milieus as it is called as student-centered helps teacher to reflect the teaching process whilst connecting academic material to the learners’ context in their daily lives in terms of personal and social contexts for promoting learning motivation.This was descriptive research that described to which extent of the implementation of contextual teaching and learning in the teaching and learning English in SMAN 1 Banjarmasin. There was one English teacher to be observed as a subject of research and involving 63 students in the process of English teaching in the classroom of the second and third grade of SMAN 1 Banjarmasin. To get the data, the researcher used observation and interview.The research found that the teacher employed several principles of contextual teaching and learning involving constructivism, questioning, inquiry, learning community, and authentic assessment in the classroom activities conducted by the observed teacher.Keywords: Contextual Teaching and Learning, Teaching Approach, Reflective Teaching

Abstract

The development of technology has resulted in many innovations, one of which is in the field of education. Innovation in the field of education today apparently uses online learning systems, online tutoring course is one of the learning systems that make students or else easier to access knowledge anytime and anywhere. One of the E-learning innovations in online learning is an application called Ruangguru. Online study or online tutoring from Ruangguru is the highest number of students who have registered in Indonesia. Education in these days was no longer centered upon a back and forth between student and teacher; todays took on a more networked approach and student having their own direct connection for gain knowledge or information. This encouraged the development of a more personalized way of learning where a student’s independence and various way to gain knowledge. This study aims to analyze innovation e-learning on modern platforms in the development of learning medium Ruangguru.

Abstract

Abstract: English is the global lesson studied in every single of education system nowadays. In fact, it is quite difficult to learn for the Indonesian people, especially for Elementary school students. One of the ways to improve their desire to learn is to combine educational elements into the game itself. This final project comes to answer that learning problem of children or elementary students by creating the alternative game. The research question was “Is there a Hopscotch Game to learn vocabulary for Elementary School Students. The purpose of the study was to make a Hopscotch Game to learn vocabulary for Elementary School Students.  The method used in this study was descriptive research. It explained the problems qualitatively to uncover solutions. The result of this study was a game which was developed from traditional games namely Hopscotch game. Application of English element in this game is the manufacturing of cards which contains some vocabulary and picture that represents the vocabulary. Therefore, surely it is easy for students to remember and to increase the number of their English vocabulary. On the other hand, they are challenged to complete all leaps in Hopscotch game while memorizing all the vocabulary that is given when they are going to jump. Then, when students make a mistake, they will get punishment which also helps to improve their vocabulary. In conclusion, maintaining the existence of traditional games and helping children to improve English vocabulary is a unique combination that is expected can be successful for students’ learning.                Keywords: Hopscotch game, Vocabulary, Elementary school students

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study was to know the effectiveness of the use of web-based English learning media for new-coming students of State Polytechnic of Bengkalis as interactive media to learn English which was not restricted in the classroom only.  This study belongs to the quasi experimental research and presents pre-test, post test and to investigate the effect of using web-based English media in mastering basic English. The participants were new coming students from the first semester (N=54) of State Polytechnic Bengkalis and divided into two groups. Both groups were taught English at basic level, however, the experimental group students who are exposed to web based English media and the controlled group students who received conventional method. Pre-test and post-test were given to both experimental group students and controlled group students. The score of the tests were compared through independent sample t-test. The mean value of pre-test of experimental class was 61.35, while the control class was 52.23. After learning using the website in experimental class the mean value obtained in post-test was 78.85, while in control class was 59.04.  The improved of learning outcomes can be seen from the level of significance was 0.000 and it was lower than t test 0.000<0.05.  It means that the hypothesis null is not accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the score of the students in learning basic English learning material between the experimental group and control group was significantly different. The experimental group students who learned basic English learning material using web-based English learning media had increased their basic English knowledge.

Abstract

This research was done to analyze how the students’ writing styles are in their descriptive paragraph in terms of sentence structure, word choice, degree of details and descriptions, and degree of formality. This is a descriptive qualitative approach with content analysis method. The sample of this study was 26 of fifth semester students of English Education Program UIN TS Jambi academic year 2018/2019. Technique of collecting the data was by documenting students’ descriptive paragraph writing and doing semi structure interview.  The result finding showed that the students have different style of writing. In terms of sentence structure, some students used many simple sentences in their writing that make their paragraphs are monotonous and boring to read; while a few students used a mixture of these sentence types that make their paragraphs are interested to read and seemed attractive. In terms of word choice, the students’ paragraphs mostly used sensory details and a figurative language of simile in describing the object. While in degree of details and description, in general all of students’ paragraphs are specific and descriptive by using prepositional phrases and adding many adjectives to describe the characteristics of the object. In addition, related to degree of formality, in general students’ descriptive paragraphs are casual.
