Abstract

Low self-esteem among children and adolescents in educational settings is not merely a transient emotional issue but a condition that can impede identity formation and erode self-worth over the long term. Most school-based interventions have relied on psychological-cognitive approaches, while the relational-spiritual dimension at the heart of pastoral counseling has rarely been integrated conceptually. This article aims to construct a conceptual framework explaining how pastoral counseling—through its five functions of healing, sustaining, guiding, reconciling, and nurturing—can strengthen the self-identity of children experiencing low self-esteem. The study employs an integrative conceptual review combined with a descriptive qualitative case-study design intended to guide further inquiry. A synthesis was conducted across 42 verified sources spanning identity development, self-esteem, social withdrawal, spirituality, and pastoral practice in schools. The synthesis is formulated into six propositions linking pastoral functions to children's psychological needs, with the values of love, acceptance, forgiveness, and hope as connecting mechanisms. The proposed framework positions a relational safe space and a supportive ecosystem—teachers, counselors, pastoral caregivers, families, and peers—as prerequisites for strengthening positive self-concept, self-acceptance, and courage. This article contributes an empirically testable theoretical model and offers a reference for holistic education that honors the wholeness of the child.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of career exploration and parental support on career adaptability among students at SMK Teuku Umar Semarang. Career adaptability is a critical competency for vocational students in facing the increasingly complex demands of the world of work, yet empirical studies integrating career exploration and parental support simultaneously as predictors in the context of Indonesian vocational education remain limited. This study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational non-experimental design. The population consisted of 626 students from grades X, XI, and XII, with a sample of 244 students selected through proportionate stratified random sampling. Data were collected using the Career Adapt-Abilities Scale–Short Form (CAAS-SF), Career Exploration Survey (CES), and Career-Related Parental Support Scale (CRPSS), and analyzed using multiple linear regression. The results show that career exploration has a significant effect on career adaptability (sig. = 0.000), and parental support also has a significant effect on career adaptability (sig. = 0.012). Simultaneously, both variables significantly influence career adaptability, contributing 65.5% to the variance explained (Adjusted R² = 0.655). These findings confirm that students' career adaptability is shaped by internal factors in the form of career exploration and external factors in the form of parental support. Therefore, improving career adaptability requires strengthening career exploration programs in schools alongside active parental involvement in students' career planning processes.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the relatively low ability of students to effectively manage and make appropriate career decisions, which is often associated with limited self-understanding and inadequate career planning. The present study aims to examine the effectiveness of career guidance services based on the career development theory of Donald E. Super in improving students’ career decision-making management, with consideration of parental parenting patterns as a contextual factor, at MAS Muhammadiyah 1 Medan. A quantitative approach with a pretest–posttest experimental design was employed. The sample consisted of 64 students selected through purposive random sampling. The intervention involved structured career guidance services grounded in Super’s career development approach. Data were collected using a career decision-making management questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired sample t-test. The findings indicate a significant improvement in students’ career decision-making management following the intervention. The hypothesis testing results revealed a significance value of 0.000 (p 0.05), confirming a statistically significant effect of Super’s career development approach on students’ career decision-making management. These findings suggest that the application of Super’s approach is effective in enhancing students’ career decision-making maturity, particularly when aligned with supportive parenting patterns

Abstract

Dating violence remains a significant issue among young women and may have adverse psychological consequences, including reduced assertiveness. Assertiveness is considered an important personal skill that enables individuals to express their thoughts, feelings, and boundaries effectively, thereby reducing vulnerability to unhealthy relationships. This study aimed to examine the relationship between personality type (extrovert–introvert) and assertiveness among young adult women who have experienced dating violence. A quantitative correlational design was employed involving 228 female participants aged 18–25 years who met the research criteria. Participants were selected using purposive sampling. Personality type was measured using the Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI), while assertiveness was assessed using an assertiveness scale adapted from Alberti and Emmons. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson Product-Moment correlation, and independent sample t-test. The results showed a positive but weak relationship between personality type and assertiveness (r = 0.124, p 0.05), indicating that the relationship was not statistically significant. Furthermore, no significant difference in assertiveness levels was found between extrovert and introvert participants (t = 0.631, p = 0.529). These findings suggest that personality type is not a determining factor of assertiveness among women who have experienced dating violence. Other psychological factors, such as self-esteem and the impact of violence experiences, may play a more substantial role in shaping assertive behavior. Future studies are recommended to explore additional factors influencing assertiveness among victims of dating violence using broader and more diverse samples.
