Abstract

Synthesis and physicochemistry properties prediction of a potential anti-inflammatory agent, diacetyl pentagamavunon-1 (diacetyl PGV-1), has been done. The synthesis was using pentagamavunon-1 (PGV-1) (2,87x10-3 mole) and anhydride acetic acid (26x10-3 mole; 37x10-3 mole; 49x10-3 mole) as starting materials and NaOH ethanolic as a catalyst. The AM1 semiempirical quantum-chemical calculations using the computational chemistry approach was used to predict and compare the physicochemisty properties of diacetyl PGV-1 to PGV-1. Odorless, light-yellow powder has been obtained. The powder was 0.8512-0.9602 g (2.02 x10-3 - 2.22x10-3 mole; 70.4-77.4%) and the purity of the powder was 92.4%. The purity of the product has been examined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), while the structure elucidation has been done using IR (Infra Red), 1H-NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) and MS (Mass Spectroscopy). The physicochemisty properties prediction showed that diacetyl PGV-1 was more hydrophobic than PGV-1.

Abstract

Thermodynamics study of Cd(II), Ni(II), and Mg(II) adsorption on silica gel immobilized with 3-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole (SG-SH) has been carried out. Three thermodynamic parameters namely adsorption capacity, equilibrium constant and adsorption energy were determined using model of Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Process of adsorption was carried out by mixing metal ion solution in various concentrations (5 - 400 mg/L) with adsorbent in a batch system. The un-adsorbed ions were determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) and the adsorbed ions were differences of ion concentration in solution before and after adsorption process. Parameters of thermodynamics i.e. capacity (a), equilibrium constant (K) and adsorption energy were determined by using the correlation curve of ratio of equilibrium concentration to the amount of adsorbed metal ions versus equilibrium concentration. Results showed that adsorption of metal ions Ni(II), Cd(II) and Mg(II) on adsorbent of silica gel immobilized with mercapto groups tend to follow Type I (monolayer) of Brunauer's classification. Evaluation of thermodynamic adsorption showed that the order of adsorption capacity was Ni(II) < Cd(II) < Mg(II) with relatively low energy adsorption, in a range  of 12 - 18 kJ/mole.

Abstract

The effect of PVC (Polyvinylchloride)-Based Membrane Composition to Ion Selective Electrode (ISE)-Hg(II) Performance using Ionophore DBA218C6 (N,N'-Dibenzyl-1,4,10,13-tetraoxa-7,16-diazacyclo octadecane),  Plasticizer NPOE (Nitrophenyl Octhyl Ether), Anionic Site KTCPB (Potassium Tetrakis (4-chloro phenyl) borate) have been performed. Membrane compositions used were:(a) PVC (30 mg), NPOE (60 mg), DBA218C6(6 mg) and KTCPB (4 mg); (b) PVC(30 mg), NPOE (60 mg), DBA218C6(7 mg) and KTCPB (3 mg); (c) PVC (30 mg), NPOE (59 mg), DBA218C6 (8 mg) and KTCPB( 3 mg). The concentration range of interference ions Zn(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II)  were 1.0 x 10-3 - 1.0 x 10-1 M. ISE-Hg(II) performance for membrane composition of 30 : 60 : 6 : 4 was 26.34 mV per decade (Nernstian Slope value) on Hg(II) concentration range of 1.0x10-6 - 1.0 x 10-1 M , membrane composition of 30 : 60 : 7 : 3 was 27.71 mV per decade on Hg(II) concentration range of 1.0 x10-6 - 1.0 x10-1 M, and membrane composition of 30 : 59 : 8 : 3 was 28.52 mV per decade on Hg(II) concentration range of  1.0 x10-6 - 1.0 x10-1 M with activity between pH 1.0-3.0. The concentration of interference ions : Zn(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) in the range of 1.0 x 10-3 - 1.0 x 10-1 M with the ratio of the primary ion to interference ions of 4 : 1 gave real effect. As results, selectivities and sensitivities between ISE-Hg(II) and Ionophore DBA218C6 could be determined by PVC-Based Membrane Composition and the effect of Zn(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II)  interference ions was observed in the concentration of 1,0 x10-3 - 1,0 x10-1 M.

Abstract

Isolation and structure elucidation of two resveratrols dimer, namely balanocarpol (1) and heimiol A (2) from stem bark of Hopea mengarawan had been done. The isolation of those compounds was carried out by chromatographic method and structure elucidation was performed by interpretation of spectroscopic data, including UV, IR,  1H and 13C NMR 1D and 2D, and FABMS.

Abstract

The activity of propyl p-benzoyloxybenzoate as a glutathione S-transferase(s) (GSTs) inhibitor has been examined through computational chemistry based theoretical approach and laboratory experiment. This research was related to the nature of GSTs as multifunctional enzymes, which play an important role in the detoxification of electrophilic compounds, the process of inflammation and the effectivities of anticancer compounds. Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) study, which was established on curcumin and its derivatives using computational chemistry approach, was used to examine the theoretical activity of p-benzoyloxybenzoate as a GSTs inhibitor. Empirical observation on GSTs inhibition was examined using formation reaction model of GS-CNB conjugate through conjugation of 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (CDNB) and glutathione (GSH) with GSTs (prepared from rat's liver) as catalysts. The result showed that the difference between the activities of propyl p-benzoyloxybenzoate as a GSTs inhibitor obtained from the computational chemistry approach and the empirical observation were not statistically significant at 95% level of confidence.

Abstract

This study reports the results of the elucidation of the sorption-desorption mechanism of Zn(II) and Cd(II) on chitin through the determination of capacity, energy, and rate constant of sorption as well as the investigation of their desorption properties in NaCl and Na2EDTA solutions. The chitin was isolated through deproteination followed by demineralization of crab (Portunus pelagicus Linn) shell using NaOH solutions. The sorption of both metal ions followed the Langmuir isotherm model, resulting the sorption capacities of 3.2 x 10-4 and 2.8 x 10-4 mol g-1 for Zn(II) and Cd(II), respectively, and sorption energies of 15.1 kJ mol-1 for Zn(II) and 17.9 kJ mol-1 for Cd(II). It was also observed that Zn(II) was sorbed slightly faster than Cd(II) with first order sorption rate constants of 2.82 x 10-3 min-1 for Zn(II) and 2.61 x 10-3 min-1 for Cd(II). The result of the desorption experiment showed that Cd(II) and especially Zn(II) could only be exchanged by Na(I) after desorbing those metal ions by strong chelating agent of EDTA2-. The easier desorption of Zn(II) than Cd(II) by EDTA2- must be attributed by the smaller sorption energy of Zn(II) and by harder acid property of Zn(II) than Cd(II) as EDTA2- contained hard electron donor elements.

Abstract

Radiation grafting of styrene monomer onto poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) film has been investigated. This research is emphasized on the conditioning of PTFE film. It was irradiated by γ-ray radiation at various irradiation dose from 2.5 - 12.5 kGy with dose rate 1.9 kGy/hour. Irradiated copolymer was then grafted by styrene monomer under various conditions. The results showed that degree of grafting increased by increasing irradiation dose, solvent concentration, temperature and time of grafting. The optimum condition of radiation grafting relatively was obtained at irradiation dose of 10 kGy, 2-propanol solvent, styrene concentration of 40 volume%, temperature and time of grafting of 70 oC and 6 hours each.

Abstract

Multiple metal ions adsorption of Cu(II), Zn(II), Mn(II) and Fe(II) on humic acid with a batch method has been carried out at pH interaction of 3, 5, and 6. Concentration of metal ions in solution before and after interaction was analyzed with Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). Result showed that adsorption multiple metal ions of Cu(II), Zn(II), Mn(II), and Fe(II) on humic acid is optimum at pH 5. Adsorption energies of the multiple metal ions Cu(II), Zn(II), Mn(II), and Fe(II) on humic acid at pH 3, 5, and 6 are around 35.0 - 37.6 kJ/mole. In general, capacity of competition adsorption of the multiple metal ions has an order as follows; Cu(II) < Fe(II) < Zn(II) < Mn(II).

Abstract

Callus of Cannabis sativa has been successfully induced from C. sativa explants and seedings. It seems that flowers are the best explant for callus induction and induction under light also give better results than induction in dark. Four cell culture lines were established from flower induced callus. Phytochemical profiles of C. sativa suspension cell cultures were investigated using HPLC and 1H-NMR. Cannabinoids and phenolic compounds related to cannabinoids such as flavonoids could not be found in the cell suspension cultures and there is no major chemical difference between the cell lines though they can visually be distinguished by their colors. Only in one cell line some aromatic compounds in the water/methanol extract could be observed in the 1H-NMR. Further investigations showed that none of these compounds are flavonoids. It seems that lack of cannabinoids in the cell cultures is related to lack of polyketide synthase activity.

The isolation of 1,3,8- trihydroxy-2(1'-pentanol)-6-methoxy anthraquinone from acetone extract of lichen thallus of Ramalina javanica Nyl. was carried out. Its structure was determined based on spectroscopic evidences.
