Abstract

A final project or Tugas Akhir Program (TAP) ADPU4500 is one of the difficulties courses to be completed by students at Universitas Terbuka. It requires learning assistance that can meet the need of all UTs students. One of the learning services that is suitably developed is Compact Disk multimedia, because of its flexibilities and practicality. This research is addressed to produce Compact Disk multimedia that is easily acquired by the student and meet the students requirements. There are several steps in developing a Compact Disk multimedia, those are needs assessment, media technological option, developmental strategy and instructional design process, prototype production process, and test-driving. Needs assessment is needed to get real students requirement view. Script Writer should be intensified in production process to get production result that suits script and avoids repeated production process requiring time and expenses. Students perception of the Compact Disk multimedia TAP ADPU4500 appearance is that it is interesting and attractive. The contents can be easily studied, help students accomplish test exercises, and increase students comprehension to TAP ADPU4500. However, the Compact Disk needs to be evaluated to improve the content.

Abstract

To Increasing the learning resources access for UT students is one of the important agenda that needs to be translated into optimizing the role of Unit Program Belajar Jarak Jauh (UPBJJ). In this case, UPBJJ-UT Surabaya has developed a collaboration to utilize ICT Center which related to the National Education Network activity (Jardiknas). This research aim is to describe the use of ICT Center for increasing the access to the learning resources for UT students, by using a qualitative approach and descriptive evaluative research strategy. The result of this research shows that student participation in the ICT Center facility is still low, the only 53 student (11.77%). The low participation of students is due to, (1) lack of adequate socialization to students, (2) students ability to access the internet, (3) location of ICT Center from students resident, and (4) the lack of obligation policy for UT students to access the internet. The results of this research also shows that the collaboration between UPBJJ UT-Surabaya with the ICT Center is not optimal, because of; (1) limited technical guidance, (2) is no clarity of operational cost, and (3) the knowledge ICT Center the UT website. However, the collaboration a good prospect, because of the strong of government to the ICT Center activity.

Abstract

As a distance education institution, Universitas Terbuka (UT) employs an independent learning system where the learning materials are delivered to the students through media, mostly in text materials. As a consequence of the learning system employed by UT, the students do not have any chance in practical activities. In some of the study programs in UT, the practical materials are delivered to the students through text materials. In conventional university, the practical course materials usually are delivered in the face-to-face mode through practical activities. From the practical materials the students are expected to have practical skills. However, because of the independent learning system employed by UT, it is difficult for UT to conduct face to face practical activities. This article discusses a way to handle the mentioned problem by developing audio-visual learning media in the form of interactive video program, especially, a case of Public Speaking Subject in the Communication Studies Program, the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences in UT. The article discusses about a subject contains materials about public speaking techniques. These practical materials, such as body language, speaking style, and the use of presentation tools, would be expected to be a solution in reaching the competence of practical courses when delivered to the students through audio-visual examples.

Abstract

In an ODL system, the interactivity among a course material and students is part of learning process. The aim of this article is to get information from students of the quality of non printed course material as supplemented course material and to analyze the influence of the use of the non printed course material on students concept understanding. In this study, the non printed course materials are audio BMP of Human Anatomy and Physiology, Graphic audio of Biometry, and CAI of Biochemistry. Data was collected through instruments in forms of objective item test and questioners. The study showed that there were improvement of students understanding on concepts of Human Anatomy and Physiology by using audio BMP, concepts of Biometry by using Graphic audio, and concepts of Biochemistry by using CAI program. The gain of understanding between pre-test and post test was significant at ?=0.05. The quality of CAI of Biochemistry as interactive learning program was adequate. However, the quality of audio BMP of Human Anatomy and Physiology and Graphic audio of Biometry were still needed to be improved so it could be better interactive learning programs.

Abstract

The kind of audio technology makes it possible to choose the technology that can make students easy and convenient to access the audio program. Audio streaming technology is technology used to put the audio programs on the website. Available in various formats audio programs that can be used for audio streaming technology. The aim of the research is to make the selection of audio technologies available for use in e-Learning system at the Open University (UT). Data taken with the questionnaire and download audio programs in various formats on the UT website. Data analysis to see the frequency calculations are presented descriptively.The results showed that the 4 (four) format used on audio technology, which is MP3 (MPEG layer 3), WMA (Windows Media Audio), OGG Vorbis, and AAC (Advanced Audio Codec) can be concluded that: most audio format easy to use are MP3, MP3 audio format is the fastest format can be downloaded by students, as well as audio technology that produces the best sound quality is MP3.

Abstract

Universitas Terbuka (UT) is an Open and Distance University in Indonesia. Since 2004, UT had developed a system for computer-based examination (UBK). This system was presented firstly on 2007. This paper addresses UT experience in conducting computer-based examination,The purpose of this research is to describe the implementation of the exam system and to identify problems which arose during implementation. Data is collected based on the student responds of the questionnaire, interview and the observer report. Data was collected in May and November 2008. 31 respondents were the students who registered and took computer-based examination at four Regional Offices in UT. Quantitative data were analyzed by using SPSS 15.0 for Windows. The results of the research revealed that (1) the main reason students took computer based examination was to improve their grades, (2) the students reported that they have good enough competencies in basic computer skills. In addition they described that they have registered computer based examination online by themselves, (3) the implementation of at their regional offices was good, (4) however students expected that there should be quality improvement in this kind of examination, especially in aspects of exam socialization, information, quota and session of student examination.

Abstract

This study is to reveal accuracy, recency, legibility,language, and physical appearance the main course material on Animal Food Substance(PANG 4221) by expert perception, lecturers, and students. The result of this study is expected to provide some useful recommendation for the revision of the course material of the Open University (UT). The data were obtained by capturing information from students of UT and non UT. The data obtained were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative methods. In addition, evaluation of the course material delevoped was conducted following the PAU-PPI format. The results the course material has high accuracy, legibility, language, materials, format, print, finishing and binding (score 3-4). However, despite high scores every aspect still needs to be revised because of some in consistencies. The recency, cover design, and content design have the lowest scores (2-3). These aspects must absolutely be revised. It can be concluded that the course material should be revised to include all findings from this study.

Abstract

Quality improvement has always been applicated by the Universitas Terbuka (UT) especially to improve its distance learning services at its regional centers. The objectives of this research are to analyze the results of the internal audit before and after the UT regional centers accepting ISO 9001:2000 certificate, to learn what the benefits of the internal audit are toward the improvement of the distance learning services in UTs regional centers, and to identify the top managers of the UTs regional centers and their staff perceptions toward the internal audit. This research was conducted between March and October 2008 in UT. The research was conducted using descriptive analysis. The report analyzing guidance, questionaires and interview guidance were employed as the research instruments. The research concluded that ISO 9001:2000 had good effects to the improvement of the distance learning services at UT regional centers. Moreover, the internal audit made the UTs regional centers did their best to improve they distance learning services and these benefits made the top managers of the UT regional centers and their staff had a good perception toward the internal audit in UT.

Abstract

This article discusses a qualitative research of diffable in the relation with open and distance education. A summary of in-depth interviews with 5 diffable is presented. It is expected that these interviews will help us gain better understanding of diffable people. Linking the diffabled to distance education, we will see that they are potential students of open and distance higher education institutions.

Abstract

Academic counseling in Higher Distance Education is one of the necessary instructional media between the faculty and the students as well as an important device for assisting students to cope and solve their problems. Up until now academic counseling has not been extensively used by lectures and students at the Universitas Terbuka because of a number of constraints such as unavailability of time, the disperse of student domicile and technological barriers. This study attempts to explore and examine the role of on-line academic counseling at Universitas Terbuka in particular at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP-UT). The finding shows that most students consider academic counseling as highly important to support student achievement. Accordingly online academic counseling needs to be more flexible and covers broader area. Online academic counseling needs a separate on-line forum aside the exciting forums such as online learning forum, smart teachers online, digital libraries, online bookstores, e-humanities, and learning object repositories. However, it is expected to be regularly scheduled and prompt response is imperative.
