Abstract

This article was written based on research that aims to determine: 1) Effect of the use of a tutorial model I Tutor Accreditation Program (PAT-UT I) and Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) on the course of elementary school science teaching and learning; 2) Effect of learning motivation; and 3) the interaction of two tutorial models (UTs Tutor Accreditation Program 1/PAT-UT I and Student Team Achievement Division /STAD) with the learning motivation and learning achievement. This study used experimental method of two-way factorial design (ANAVA 2 x 3). This study involved two groups, which were PAT-UT I group and STAD group. Data was collected by means of questionnaires and multiple choice learning achievement tests. The results showed (with significance level (?) 5%): 1) tutorial model has a significant effect on learning achievement attained by students; 2) learning motivation influenced learning achievement significantly; 3) there were no interaction between the tutorial model, learning motivation, and learning achievement. It was concluded that learning achievements of students with STAD tutorial model were better compared to PAT-UT I tutorial model. Higher learning motivations were resulted in higher learning achievements and learning outcomes.

Abstract

This research was conducted to trace the long effects of psychological interventions, which were provided in the previous research in 2004. The psychological interventions were given to the distance learners of Universitas Terbuka (UT) in the previous research experiments in 2004. The psychological treatments had been aimed to enhance self-directed learning abilities to the first year students of Public Administration Study Program of UT, who registered in 2004.The respondents had randomly assigned into three experimental groups and one control group. The learners achievement had been followed to the first semester of 2007 and 2008. Learnersachievement was measured through regular course examinations. The three experimental groups were tested against the control group. The hypothesis was tested using analysis of Variances (ANOVA). The results show that after a 3 to 4 yeras there was a significant difference in students achievement between the experimental groups and the control group (p = 0.027). In summary, this research proves that psychological interventions that are usually used in face-to-face education could effectively be used in distance education context as well. As the findings show that, after a period of time, the interventions significantly increase students awareness of the need to learn that leads to the increase in their self-directed learning abilities and their achievement.

Abstract

Universitas Terbuka (UT) as a higheropen anddistanceeducationinstitution has beencarrying outstudents assessmentin the form ofpaper and pencil and online examinations. This studywas conductedto determinethe effectiveness ofthe implementation of theOnline ExaminationSystem(Sistem Ujian Online=SUO), in terms of the reliability(robustness) of SUO application, the readiness ofHuman Resources inimplementingan online exam, the infrastructure that supporting SUO, and the studentresponses. The results showed that SUO applicationand support application had beenwell developedbyUT, proven that the SUO havebeenin operation in 30 out of 37UTregional centersin 2010. Studentsdid notface manyproblems in registering in the online exam.Infrastructureandhuman resourceswere considered satisfactory. Respondentsalso said that SUO was veryflexiblein terms of choosing theexamschedule andgetting the immediate feedback. Based on the research results, a SUO modelhad been developed and to be implementedatUT. The SUOmodel isdescribed inseveralbusinessprocesses, which includethe preparation, execution, processingexam results, as well assupervisionandevaluation. In the future, UTstillneeds toimprovefacilities, infrastructure andquality of human resources thatcansupport theonline exam. The implementation of online examrelies heavily oninformationtechnology (IT) and itis expectedthatSUOis adaptablewith this rapidly changed technology.

Abstract

Face-to-face tutorial is a type of student services provided by Universitas Terbuka at each regional center. Factors which influence the effectiveness of face-to-face tutorial at Banda Aceh regional center were discussed. The research method was descriptive-corelational. There were 66 tutors as respondents filled the questionnaire. Data collection was carried out from April until June 2010. In analyzing the data, correlation test of Rank Spearman was used. The results showed that (1) the effectiveness of face-to-face tutorial was at medium level; (2) factors which influence the effectiveness of face-to-face tutorial were the infrastructure, the contribution of regional center and the quantity of face-to-face tutorial

Abstract

The management quality standard of UT student services is based on ISO 9001. Recently ISO 9001:2008 certificate already being applied to 35 UT Regional Centres (UPBJJ-UT). UT has to allocate considerable amout of budget in order to maintain them. Considering the limitattion of budget in the future, a study had to be conducted in order to collect information on the perception of Academicians community toward the benefit on implementing ISO 9001:2008. The purposes of the study were (1) to identify the benefits of ISO certification, (2) to identify the perceptions of colleagues and students toward the acquisition of ISO certification, and (3) to explain the relations between UPBJJ-UTs characteristics based on their geographical conditions, their partners and students perceptions toward the acquisition of ISO certificate. The research methodology applied the standard survey, by submitting questionnaire to the UPBJJ-UTs leaders, staffs, partners and students at 10 UPBJJ-UT which were characterized by urban, islands, and inland. Data was analysed by applying descriptive statistics methods. The result showed that : (1) the officials in the UPBJJ management level felt that ISO as procedures were very useful for managing the office administration, however some procedures need to be modified and readapted to make them better, more realistic and humanist (2) the achievement of ISO certificate did not have any influence to UT colleagues and studentss peceptions towards UT (3) Based on UPBJJ-UT characteristics, it seemed thatthere were no differences in perceptions among UT partners and students toward UTs ISO certificate.

Abstract

Several researches on learning styles and learning strategies had been conducted at Universitas Terbuka (UT. It had found out that students tend to have visual learning style. Different learning styles and learning strategies might be happened in students at each regional office due to the influence of local ethnicity. This article was written based on a research conducted to determine the tendency of students' learning styles and strategies at the Regional Center (UPBJJ-UT) Medan compared to UTs students' learning styles and strategies in general. Comparition was also done between exacta students and non-exacta students in the UPBJJ-UT Medan. Data were collected through questionnaire and analyzed with descriptive method. The findings showed that: (1) the students learning styles at the UPBJJ-UT Medan tend to be similar with the students of UT in general, which was visual learning style; (2) there were different learning styles between exacta students and non-exacta students; (3) students learning strategies at the UPBJJ-UT Medan have not been effective. It was suggested that UPBJJ-UT Medan should help students by developing a handbook or manual of self-learning strategies which could be socialized continuously at the New Student Orientation Study (OSMB) and through the web site.

Abstract

UT has implemented computerized system for registration and examination which require accurate data and information entered. This research was conducted to analyze factors related to the accuracy of students data and information on the examination. A hundred students from Jakarta and Mataram regional centers, who have taken examination on the 1st and 2nd semester in 2009, were randomly selected as respondents, but only 58 students had responded. Primary and secondary data were collected and analyzed descriptively. Results showed that most of students who took examination were 36-50 years old (48.28%), already have job (79.31%), and first registered about 5 years before the last examination (74.14%). In terms of the adminitration of registration, most of the students said that they did it by themselves (89.66%), at UTs Regional Center (50%), and before the registration period ended (100%). The result also showed that students still made mistakes in filling the examination forms, especially data about the date of birth (20.69%), students number identification (18.97%), and subject matter code (22.41%). About the role of the examination proctor, most of students commented that they had came ontime to examination room (98.28%), provide very clearl briefing (87.93%), and examining students data accurately (86.21%). Result of Rank Spearman Correlation Coefficient indicated that factors that significantly related to the accuracy of students data on the examintaion (?=0.05) are the age of students, time of registration, registration conductor, the clarity of briefing, and the accuracy of proctors in examining students data.

Abstract

The research aims to find out Self Directed Learning Readiness (SDLR) of potential students and prospective students (high school students) to learn by open and distance learning (ODL) in Indonesia. Research conducted by survey method. The population were high school students who are considered grade 12 as a potential candidate ODL student, a freshman, and ODL student at the Open University (UT). SDLR levels were measured by questionnaires Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS) developed by Guglielmino (1989). The results showed that the SDLR level of high school students were statistically lower than the SDLR level of UT students, both new students and previous students. However, there were no statistically significant differences between the SDLR level of new students and previous students of UT. Score SDLRS obtained show that the UT student has average levels of SDLR. This means that UT students can successfully learn independently but they are not very responsible to determine learning needs, plan, implement, and evaluate their own learning. UT students who have the SDLR level above average are over 55 years students.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find an alternative model for Online bookstore that works for Universitas Terbuka. The alternative model should reduce the difference between the ordering and delivering transaction, which in turn can improve the performance of Toko Buku Online UT. Results showed that there were several significant factors that must be present in the Online bookstore system. Such factors are treating customers well by including updated information about orders that have been made; improving business processes continuously and periodically based on input and evaluation from the consumer; letting consumers decide their own transactions by providing FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) facility; and performing personal services among others through email and chat facility. Based on these findings, the proposed recommendations is to add some features to the system of Toko Buku Online UT. These features include buffer stocks, auto-reply mechanism, information about the delivery and return of materials, chat facility (facebook, twitter, yahoo messenger), and FAQ facility.

Abstract

This article discusses about distance education in the context of sosiological point of view. The discussion emphasizes on the concepts of social capital and human capital, especially, the role of distance education in contributing social capital and human capital in the society. It is also focuses about the contribution social capital and human capital in the distance education institution in Indonesia, that is the Universitas Terbuka. The discussion shows us that distance education institution has the role in improving the human capital that, then, force in increasing the social capital between the human who are involved in the society social network.
