Abstract

This article discusses about distance education in the context of sosiological point of view. The discussion emphasizes on the concepts of social capital and human capital, especially, the role of distance education in contributing social capital and human capital in the society. It is also focuses about the contribution social capital and human capital in the distance education institution in Indonesia, that is the Universitas Terbuka. The discussion shows us that distance education institution has the role in improving the human capital that, then, force in increasing the social capital between the human who are involved in the society social network.

Abstract

This paper describes the development process of Adobe Captivate  based e-learning teaching modules. The subject matter and the topic is Physics for high school students class X. There are five process in the development, firstly is information collection to determine the need of the developement process. Second is design phase includes determining topics of subject matter, designing multimedia and flowchart, and development of storyboard. Third is integration of storyboard into Adobe Captivate program and disigning multimedia such as  illustrations (picture, images), visualization (animation, video and audio), as well as packing an evaluation tool. Fourth is module evaluation. This stage involves review process of the content and media program by experts. Fifth is one to one tryout process. This process conducted in SMAN 83 East Jakarta for physics teacher in small group. The results showed that the topics in module quite good and suitable for high school students. Furthemore, the expert of media stated that the visual, animation, videos, sounds and interactivity Adobe Captivate based e-learning teaching module is very good. Meanwhile, teacher opinion about the trial of this module is quite suitable as evaluaton tool to assess the students achievement. Artikel ini menggambarkan proses pengembangan bahan ajar (modul) e-learning berbasis adobe captivate. Modul ajar yang dikembangkan adalah untuk mata pelajaran fisika dengan topik guru untuk siswa SMA kelas X. Pengembangan modul ajar berbasis Adobe Captivate meliputi beberapa proses tahapan yaitu: pertama, mengumpulkan informasi yang berguna untuk menentukan kebutuhan akan pengembangan modul ajar e-learning. Kedua adalah tahap disain yang meliputi pengembangan garis besar multimedia dan naskah mata pelajaran fisika yang akan dijadikan modul e-learning. Ketiga adalah tahap pengembangan modul ajar berupa pengintegrasian ke dalam program captivate dengan menentukan sistematika penyajian materi, ilustrasi (gambar), visualisasi (animasi, video dan audio), serta perancangan alat evaluasi. Keempat adalah tahap evaluasi yang dilakukan oleh ahli materi dan ahli media. Kelima adalah tahap ujicoba dalam skala kecil kepada guru fisika di SMA. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa sajian materi berdasarkan review ahli materi adalah cukup bagus, sedangkan penilaian ahli media menyatakan bahwa tampilan visual, suara, format penyajian dan interaktivitas modul ajar berbasis Adobe Captivate adalah bagus. Sementara itu uji coba kepada guru SMA menggambarkan bahwa modul ajar berbasis Adobe Captivate dapat dijadikan sebagai materi ajar terutama dalam pengembangan bank soal sebagai alat evaluasi untuk menilai pemahaman siswa.

Abstract

Printed materials are the primary source in open and distance learning (ODL). In presenting the material, printed materials are divided into several sections of learning, called modules. To develop the quality of printed materials and their literacy, formative evaluation should be done. This article is aimed to analyze modules literacy through formative evaluation. The research design is a formative evaluation through qualitative approach. The research was conducted through the following steps: assessment of module literacy by one-to-one evaluation with 3 learners, and a small group evaluation with 9 learners. Object of study is Module of Training Management (contained 2 credits, divided into 6 modules) that have been revised based opinion of subject matter expert and design instructional expert. Parts that were evaluated are Module 1 and Module 5 because they are considered to be the most important parts. The findings indicated that results of one-to-one evaluation with students are module materials were understood, but it should be made clear on several parts. Explanation of the material is too long; the question phrase needs to be reduced, and the use of difficult words and foreign words should be avoided. The results of the small group evaluation are that module materials in the learning process are effectively. Its just that there are some errors: some sentences that are too long; still found difficult words; materials less attractive because less module displays images; lack of motivation for the students sentences; few pictures not clear; examples are too general not specific in agribusiness area. Bahan ajar cetak (BAC) merupakan sumber belajar utama dalam penyelenggaran proses belajar jarak jauh di Universitas Terbuka (UT). Dalam menyajikan materi, BAC dibagi menjadi beberapa bagian pembelajaran yang disebut modul. Untuk mengembangkan BAC yang berkualitas dari segi materi dan tingkat keterbacaan, perlu dilakukan evaluasi formatif terhadap BAC yang sudah ada. Tujuan penulisan artikel adalah untuk menganalisis tingkat keterbacaan modul melalui evaluasi formatif sebagai bahan masukan untuk revisi modul. Rancangan penelitian adalah evaluasi formatif dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Penelitian dilakukan melalui tahapan sebagai berikut: penilaian tingkat keterbacaan modul melalui evaluasi satu-satu dengan 3 mahasiswa; dan evaluasi oleh sekelompok kecil (9 orang) mahasiswa. Objek kajian adalah modul mata kuliah Manajemen Pelatihan yang sudah direvisi sesuai dengan pendapat pakar materi dan pakar desian instruksional, berbobot 2 sks, terbagi menjadi 6 modul. Bagian yang dievaluasi adalah modul 1 dan 5 karena dianggap sebagai dua bagian yang paling penting. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa secara umum materi modul dapat dimengerti, namun perlu diperjelas pada beberapa bagian, di antaranya adalah penjelasan materi terlalu panjang, kalimat pertanyaan perlu dikurangi jumlahnya, serta penggunaan kata-kata sulit dan asing perlu dihindari. Hasil evaluasi oleh sekelompok kecil mahasiswa adalah materi modul cukup efektif dalam proses pembelajaran. Hanya saja masih terdapat beberapa kelemahan, di antarnya adalah: ada beberapa kalimat yang terlalu panjang; masih ditemukan kata-kata sulit; materi modul kurang menarik karena kurang menampilkan gambar; kurangnya kalimat motivasi untuk mahasiswa; beberapa gambar tidak terlihat jelas; contoh yang diberikan terlalu umum tidak spesifik dalam bidang agribisnis.

Abstract

Printed teaching materials (PTM) is the main source of student learning Open University (OU). In the learning process, PTM commonly known as the subject matter of the book (BMP), which presents the material in the module. BMP in higher education open and distance (PTJJ) is designed using a tight structure with a load of information and knowledge-intensive. The purpose of writing this article is to analyze the level of legibility BMP material and effectiveness of instructional design through field trials. The study design was a formative evaluation with a qualitative approach, by taking the object of research BMP Training Management. The informants were 30 students who have not taken the PS Agribusiness Management Training courses. Informants were selected from UT Jember with criteria GPA <2,00; 2,00 to 2,50; and GPA> 2,50, selected 10 students in each criterion. The collection of data through questionnaires and interviewing students directly. Data were analyzed with data reduction, classifying, and draw conclusions. The results showed that in general the material module can be understood, but there are some sentences that are too long and thus require full concentration for students to understand and still found the words that are difficult to understand. For some students, there are examples of confusing and difficult to understand. Images can support material explanation, but there are some images that need to be refined appearance to the students more easily understand. Effectiveness was measured effectiveness of instructional design guidance and encouragement in modules to help students understand the module. Most students do not understand the meaning of the solicitation and guidance. Small tasks can help students to recall the material that has been read. Student formative tests can be understood as the question in accordance with the contents of the module. These results are then used to revise the module. Bahan ajar cetak (BAC) merupakan sumber belajar utama mahasiswa Universitas Terbuka (UT). Dalam proses pembelajaran, BAC biasa dikenal dengan buku materi pokok (BMP) yang menyajikan materi dalam modul. BMP pada pendidikan tinggi terbuka dan jarak jauh (PTTJJ) didesain menggunakan struktur yang ketat dengan memuat informasi dan pengetahuan yang padat. Tujuan penulisan artikel ini adalah menganalisis tingkat keterbacaan materi BMP dan efektivitas desain instruksional melalui uji coba lapangan. Rancangan penelitian adalah evaluasi formatif dengan pendekatan kualitatif, dengan mengambil objek penelitian BMP Manajemen Pelatihan. Informan penelitian adalah 30 orang mahasiswa PS Agribisnis yang belum mengambil mata kuliah Manajemen Pelatihan. Informan dipilih dari UT Jember dengan kriteria IPK <2,00; 2,00-2,50; dan IPK>2,50, dipilih 10 mahasiswa pada setiap kriteria. Pengumpulan data melalui kuesioner dan mewawancarai mahasiswa secara langsung. Data dianalisis dengan mereduksi data, mengelompokkan, dan mengambil kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa secara umum materi modul dapat dimengerti, tetapi ada beberapa kalimat yang masih terlalu panjang sehingga membutuhkan konsentrasi penuh bagi mahasiswa untuk memahaminya dan masih ditemukan kata-kata yang sulit dimengerti. Bagi sebagian mahasiswa, ada contoh yang membingungkan dan sulit difahami. Gambar dapat menunjang penjelasan materi, namun ada beberapa gambar yang perlu disempurnakan tampilannya agar mahasiswa lebih mudah memahami. Efektivitas desain instruksional diukur efektivitas bimbingan dan ajakan dalam modul untuk membantu mahasiswa memahami modul. Sebagian mahasiswa belum memahami makna ajakan dan bimbingan. Tugas-tugas kecil dapat membantu mahasiswa dalam mengingat kembali materi yang sudah dibaca. Tes formatif dapat difahami mahasiswa karena pertanyaannya sesuai dengan isi modul. Hasil penelitian ini selanjutnya digunakan untuk merevisi modul.

Abstract

Students knowledge on system for open and distance learning (ODL) is important since the information will be useful in improving students services. This article discusses students understanding on ODL system and factors that affect it. The sample were 380 students from UPBJJ-UT Banda Aceh. Data collection was carried out from May to October 2011. Correlation test of Rank Spearman was used to analyze the data. The results showed that (1) students knowledge on distance learning system was low (2) factors which influence students knowledge on ODL system were the ability in using internet, study group and information access. Pengetahuan mahasiswa UT tentang sistem belajar jarak jauh adalah hal yang menarik untuk diteliti mengingat informasi dasar tersebut dapat digunakan dalam menentukan strategi pelayanan yang paling efektif. Artikel ini membahas pemahaman mahasiswa UT Banda Aceh tentang sistem belajar jarak jauh (SBJJ). Selain itu juga dipaparkan faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi pemahaman mahasiswa terhadap SBJJ. Sampel adalah 380 orang mahasiswa UPBJJ-UT Banda Aceh. Data dikumpulkan dari bulan Mei hingga Oktober 2011. Untuk menganalisa data digunakan korelasi Rank Spearman. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tingkat pengetahuan mahasiswa UPBJJ-UT Banda Aceh tentang sistem SBJJ sangat rendah. Selain itu, kemampuan menggunakan internet, kelompok belajar, dan akses terhadap informasi berpengaruh terhadap pemahaman mahasiswa pada sistem SBJJ.

Abstract

The kind of audio technology makes it possible to choose the technology that can make students easy and convenient to access the audio program. Audio streaming technology is technology used to put the audio programs on the website. Available in various formats audio programs that can be used for audio streaming technology. The aim of the research is to make the selection of audio technologies available for use in e-Learning system at the Open University (UT). Data taken with the questionnaire and download audio programs in various formats on the UT website. Data analysis to see the frequency calculations are presented descriptively.The results showed that the 4 (four) format used on audio technology, which is MP3 (MPEG layer 3), WMA (Windows Media Audio), OGG Vorbis, and AAC (Advanced Audio Codec) can be concluded that: most audio format easy to use are MP3, MP3 audio format is the fastest format can be downloaded by students, as well as audio technology that produces the best sound quality is MP3.

Abstract

As students of distance education institutions, the interest of Universitas Terbuka’s students in following the online tutorials  showed an increasing number from year to year. However, the number of students who actively following the online tutorial apparently not as big as the number of students who activated the tutorial.  This showed that there were certain factors that caused students did not participate actively. A quantitative approach was used to explain the effect of online tutorial service quality on students’ satisfaction and loyalty. Data collected through an online survey to all participants in the Faculty of Law, Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) which selected using accidental sampling technique. Furthermore, the data was analyzed by using the regression analysis and the univariate analysis. These analyses showed that the SERVQUAL model could be used to measure the learning services quality from multidimensional. Learning support services via the Internet (online tutorial) provided by UT stated in the good and satisfactory category. However, there were aspects of learning support services that still needed to be fixed by Universitas Terbuka, especially the accuracy of tutorial services provided by tutors, the speed of time to respond, giving feedback, and answering student questions.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to develop a model of tutorial delivered through video conference. A formative evaluation model of Dick, Carey and Carey was implemented in this developmental research. This model of formative consists of some systematic phases such as: need analysis, designing a prototype of the program, one-to-one try out with individual student and small group evaluation. The result of the study reveals that the video conference learning materials should be designed and developed based on several factors instructional objectives, potential of the video conference as a delivery system, course characterstics and instructional media support. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengembangkan model tutorial disampaikan melalui video conference. Sebuah model evaluasi formatif dari Dick, Carey dan Carey dilaksanakan dalam penelitian perkembangan ini. Model formatif terdiri dari beberapa tahap sistematis seperti: analisis kebutuhan, merancang prototipe program, satu-ke-satu mencoba dengan individu siswa dan evaluasi kelompok kecil. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa bahan pembelajaran video conference harus dirancang dan dikembangkan berdasarkan beberapa faktor - tujuan instruksional, potensi konferensi video sebagai sistem pengiriman, tentu saja characterstics dan instruksional dukungan media.

Abstract

Several researches on learning styles and learning strategies had been conducted at Universitas Terbuka (UT. It had found out that students tend to have visual learning style. Different learning styles and learning strategies might be happened in students at each regional office due to the influence of local ethnicity. This article was written based on a research conducted to determine the tendency of students learning styles and strategies at the Regional Center (UPBJJ-UT) Medan compared to UTs students learning styles and strategies in general. Comparition was also done between exacta students and non-exacta students in the UPBJJ-UT Medan. Data were collected through questionnaire and analyzed with descriptive method. The findings showed that: (1) the students learning styles at the UPBJJ-UT Medan tend to be similar with the students of UT in general, which was visual learning style; (2) there were different learning styles between exacta students and non-exacta students; (3) students learning strategies at the UPBJJ-UT Medan have not been effective. It was suggested that UPBJJ-UT Medan should help students by developing a handbook or manual of self-learning strategies which could be socialized continuously at the New Student Orientation Study (OSMB) and through the web site.

Abstract

Communication process needs to be built in an online-tutorial to liven up students interaction and participation in a discussion forum. One of the strategies tutors can do to enhance student participation in providing feedback in a discussion forum is by giving additional questions. This paper is the result of research in the form of action research on online tutorial in the subject of Fisheries Resources Management 2009.1 period that is conducted by providing two questions in five initiations, and one question in three initiations. The purpose of question giving is to obtain information about the differences in the number of student responses who were given one question and two questions. In addition, this article also examines students and experts perceptions on the quality of tutor questions and the result of expert assessment on the quality of student responses. The assessment is based on the comprehension, substance and benefits. Research results showed that the number of responses from student given with two questions is higher and significantly different compared with the number of responses from students given one question. In general, the first question and the second question assessed by students and experts are of good quality. The second question is assessed as an applied question, while the first question is considered as a theoretical question. The second question is considered to have better quality than the first question in the aspects of easiness/simplicity to understand, relevance to up to date issues on the field and the ability to train students in finding the best solution of a problem in the field of fisheries. Proses komunikasi dalam tutorial online perlu dibangun untuk menghidupkan interaksi dan partisipasi mahasiswa dalam forum diskusi. Salah satu strategi yang dapat dilakukan tutor untuk meningkatkan partisipasi mahasiswa dalam memberikan tanggapan di forum diskusi adalah melalui pemberian tambahan pertanyaan. Tulisan ini merupakan hasil penelitian dalam bentuk action research terhadap kegiatan tutorial online pada mata kuliah Manajemen Sumber Daya Perikanan masa 2009.1 yang telah dilakukan dengan menerapkan pemberian dua pertanyaan di lima inisiasi dan satu pertanyaan di tiga inisiasi. Tujuan pemberian pertanyaan adalah untuk mendapatkan informasi tentang perbedaan jumlah tanggapan mahasiswa yang diberi satu pertanyaan dan dua pertanyaan. Selain itu, artikel ini juga mengkaji persepsi mahasiswa dan pakar terhadap kualitas pertanyaan tutor dan hasil penilaian pakar terhadap kualitas tanggapan mahasiswa. Penilaian didasarkan pada ketercernaan, substansi dan manfaatnya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan jumlah tanggapan mahasiswa yang diberi dua pertanyaan lebih tinggi dan nyata berbeda dibanding jumlah tanggapan mahasiswa yang diberi satu pertanyaan. Secara umum, pertanyaan pertama dan pertanyaan kedua dinilai mahasiswa dan pakar memiliki kualitas yang baik. Pertanyaan kedua dinilai merupakan pertanyaan terapan, sedangkan pertanyaan pertama dinilai sebagai pertanyaan yang bersifat teori. Pertanyaan kedua dinilai memiliki kualitas yang lebih baik dibanding pertanyaan pertama dalam aspek kemudahan untuk dipahami, kerelevanan dengan masalah yang up to date yang terjadi di lapangan dan kemampuan untuk melatih mahasiswa dalam mencarikan solusi terbaik dari suatu permasalahan di bidang perikanan.
