Abstract: This research aims to find out (1) the neglected variables of characteristics of a good test which is done by lecturers in developing their test, and (2) the ways the lecturers develop their own test in relation to the neglected variables. This research is explanatory mix method design. There are two variables in this research. They are lecturers’ consideration and test development. The population of this research is 33 lecturers in which 18 from IAIN Parepare and 15 from UMPAR. The samples are taken by random technique in which 30 samples. The instruments of this research are questionnaire, interview and documentation. This research uses percentage technique to analyze the data. The results of this research show that (1) here are the sequences of the neglected variables in developing language test: reliability, appropriateness in difficulty, clarity, comprehensiveness, validity, transparency, appropriateness in time, and economic, and (2) From three interview sections, this research finds differences of the way lecturers develop their test. The result of the study shows that the technique improves the students writing skill in narrative writing, however the scores are not significant. This suggests that there is a factor that affects the result of the teaching using peer feedback, and it is the less time of treatment which is indicated as the factor.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the effects of interruptions on rapport orientations. The data of the research were obtained from two meetings held in an educational institution in Makassar. The data were collected through a video recording of the meetings to identify the interruption use performed by the meeting participants and by giving the meeting participants the questionnaire containing questions concerning the use of the interruptions in the meetings. The data were then transcribed and extracted into several parts to be analysed. The data were also obtained by carrying out a participant observation by which the researcher obtained the meeting participants’ perceptions and their responses on the use of the interruptions during the meetings. This research indicates that the interruptions have a number of effects on the rapport orientations. There are two types of interruptions, i.e. competitive and cooperative interruptions. The interruption effects are primarily regarding to the enhancement and threats to the three interconnected rapport components which are: face, social rights and obligations, and interactional goals. The interruptions occurring also have several roles in the meetings which are closely related to the rapport management like clarifying and supporting main speakers’ points in the meetings, as the way to do relational work and back-channeling of the statement of the main speakers resulting in the type of rapport orientations applied by the meetings’ participants.

The samples was chosen using cluster random sampling technique. The total numbers of sample were consisted of 55 students from two classes taken from the population of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 9 Parepare. The instrument used in this research was speaking test by record the students’ utterance. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result of the data analyzed shows that the students’ speaking ability improved significantly. It was showed by the mean score of pre-test was 45.33 and the post-test was 72. 83. Besides, the mean score of the students in post-test (72.83) was higher than the Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal (71) in SMP Negeri 9 Parepare and include good classification base on Dirjen Pendidikan Dasar dan Menegah (2005). In the same line, the result of t-test value was 2.102 and t-table value was 2.004 in post-test. It means that the t-test value (2.102) was higher than t-table value (2.004). Those indicate that H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected.
