Abstract

There are three results of this research, (a) the role of Borobudur as a symbol, Borobudur Temple is not only a Buddhist religious site but also a cultural symbol that connects spiritual values with the local culture of Javanese society. Borobudur has a broader meaning in a socio-cultural context, as a center of cultural identity that unites religion and local traditions, (b) harmony of the Nyadran and Sedekah Bumi traditions with the symbolic meaning of Borobudur. The Nyadran and Sedekah Bumi traditions are in harmony with the symbolic values of Borobudur which are reflected in the relationship between humans, nature and ancestors. Nyadran as a ritual of respect for ancestors contains moral and spiritual values that are in line with Buddhist teachings about karma and enlightenment. Likewise, Sedekah Bumi expresses gratitude towards nature, reflecting awareness of the importance of maintaining balance between humans and the environment. (c) harmonious integration between Buddhists, Buddhists and local culture. The tradition of Nyadran and Sedekah Bumi carried out by Buddhists in Central Java shows a harmonious integration between Buddhist teachings and local culture, thus making Borobudur a symbol of social cohesion and diversity. These two traditions have experienced cultural adaptation to become post-traditions. namely maintaining the tradition of Nyadran and Sedekah Bumi to the earth in the modern era accompanied by entertainment, but still maintaining its core meaning

Abstract

Oral Communication is a crucial skill, particularly in higher education, where students must engage and articulate concepts effectively. Nonetheless, speaking proficiency can be affected by other factors, one of them is personal traits. This study seeks to examine the speaking ability of students in relation to their personality types. According to the Big Five Personality’ Theory, people are classified into personality types such as extrovert, conscientiousness, openness, agreeableness, and neuroticism which influence how they communicate verbally. To determine the relationship between the two variables, this study conducted a qualitative method involving questionnaires, students’ speaking ability test, and interview. The findings surprisingly showed that extroverted personality turned out to have small contribution to speaking ability. This trait did not have a strong correlation with speaking skill seems contradictory because extroverts are often perceived as more communicative. On other hand, openness trait has the highest impact in communication. This type likely to participate more comfortably in discussion and construct logical arguments fluently in English. Although students with openness have fewer opportunities to talk than extrovert, their speaking components such as pronunciation and word usage were extremely accurate.

Abstract

This study critically examined Taylor Swift's Midnights album's stylistic devices, thematic elements, and audience reception, employing a qualitative research design. The corpus consisted of the album's thirteen (13) songs, analyzed through the lens of Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework, encompassing description, interpretation, and explanation, and supplemented by I. R. Galperin’s theory of stylistic devices. Additionally, focus group discussions with Swifties provided insights into fan reception. The analysis identified 135 stylistic devices in the album's lyrics, including metaphor (61 instances, 45.19%), imagery (22 cases, 16.30%), simile (13 instances, 9.63%), Hyperbole (8 instances, 5.93%), personification (8 cases, 5.93%), allusion (3 instances, 2.22%), juxtaposition (1 instance, 1%), epistrophe (1 instance, 1%), and rhyme (1 instance, 1%). The recurring thematic elements in the album encompassed self-realization, self-empowerment, escape and solitude, regret and loss, vulnerability, control and manipulation, reclaiming independence, social pressure and expectation, emotional resonance, emotional detachment, emotional turmoil, acceptance, and rejecting conformity. Swifties' reception of the album revealed emergent themes, including self-reflection, self-reliance, emotional acceptance, love, vulnerability, relatability, anxiety, and pain. This study highlights the complex interplay between stylistic expression, thematic depth, and audience engagement in contemporary music discourse, offering insights into the cultural and emotional impact of Taylor Swift's Midnights.

Abstract

This study focused on a methodological analysis of Shaikh Muhammad Muhājirīn ’Amsār Bekasi al-Dārī in interpreting hadith, taking into account the contemporary challenges faced by modern society, and aims to explore his unique approach that integrates social, historical, and cultural contexts in interpreting hadith. The data collection method was carried out through documentation of the Sheikh's works, focusing on his book Miṣbāḥ al-Ẓalām Sharḥ Bulūgh al-Marām min Adillah al-Aḥkām as a primary source. Data analysis was carried out based on a hermeneutic approach, living tradition, and contextual theology that lead to a more holistic understanding. The findings showed that Shaikh Muhammad Muhājirīn ’Amsār Bekasi al-Dārī not only considers the text, but also seeks to create a dialogue between Islamic teachings and modern issues, such as social injustice and environmental change. The conclusion of this study confirmed that the Sheikh's methodological approach opens up new insights in more applicable and responsive hadith studies. The contribution of this study lies in the introduction of the Sheikh methodology as a dynamic model, providing a new perspective in the academic world. The limitations of the study lie in the narrow geographical focus and the analysis that does not cover the entire historical track. Suggestions for further research include exploring the application of this approach in international contexts and various cultural backgrounds to produce a more comprehensive understanding of the teachings of the hadith.

Abstract

This study focuses on the possible social impacts of Islamic family law on women's empowerment in Indonesia and Saudi Arabia, with the aim of exploring the interaction between Islamic feminist theory, Pierre Bourdieu's structuralism, and Lawrence Friedman's legal socialization theory. The data collection method was carried out through documentation analysis and in-depth literature study, covering primary sources such as family law laws and regulations. The data collected were analyzed using a qualitative approach that allows for the identification of patterns, themes, and trends that are relevant in predicting the implementation of the law in both countries. The findings show a significant difference between the normativity that describes legal practice and social reality, where legal norms are often not in line with the conditions faced by women in everyday life. The conclusion of this study emphasizes the need for more inclusive legal reforms and public education on women's rights as a step towards achieving better gender equality. The contribution of this study promises a novel aspect, namely the integration of different theories to gain a more comprehensive understanding. Several limitations were also found in the data collection that indicate the need for further research, especially involving women's perspectives and other socio-economic, religious, political, and educational factors in the context of family law. Suggestions for future research include exploring cross-national collaboration to broaden understanding of Islamic law and its impact on women's empowerment globally.

Abstract

Humor plays a vital role in human communication, serving complex social functions, especially within the Arab cultural context. This study aims to analyze the pragmatic aspects of Arabic humor by examining violations of cooperative principles and politeness strategies found in humorous dialogues. It focuses on pragmatic analysis based on Grice's cooperative principle and Brown and Levinson's politeness theory. These theoretical frameworks are particularly relevant to Arabic humor given the culture's strong emphasis on indirect communication and face-saving practices in social interactions. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research analyzes ten humorous dialogues from Instagram Reels shared by the user @taraef_alarab. The study reveals that Arabic humor's effectiveness often lies in the intentional violation of the maxims of relation and quantity, along with the sophisticated use of politeness strategies to navigate sensitive situations, particularly within family and marital contexts. These findings confirm that humor serves as a social mechanism, allowing for the discussion of sensitive topics in a culturally acceptable manner. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the pragmatic role of humor in intercultural communication and provides an analytical framework for studying humor within the Arab socio-cultural context.
