Abstract

The present study aimed at investigating alternative assessment (AA) within the Yemeni university EFL classrooms in terms of identifying the challenges of using AA to assess undergraduate EFL students from the perspectives of the faculty. Data were collected, through a questionnaire, from (66) lecturers and professors of different ranks who teach EFL at the collegiate level in two Yemeni public universities and one national university. The results of the study indicated that faculty members of English departments at Yemeni universities face some challenges of using AA to assess undergraduate EFL students. These challenges belong to various factors, including the instructional environment, the students, the management of Yemeni universities, the faculty members, or the nature of AA. Statistically significant differences were found in the mean scores according to years of experience variable between respondents with less than 5 years and those with 5-10 years of experience in favor of those with less than 5 years of experience, but not according to the type of university, gender, and specialization variables. Accordingly, some recommendations were given to address the identified challenges, which might lead to a better implementation of AA in Yemeni university EFL classrooms.

Abstract

The primary aim of this study is to investigate the influence of ideology on news. The goals are to determine the interpersonal characteristics of the text and to link them to the ideologies that they can realize. The clause's mood structure is the means by which the fundamental differences are realized at the lexicogrammatical level within the contextual register variable of Tenor. Specifically, participants in an interaction encode their perception (or at least their ostensible perception) of both their relationships with others and the social and situational sense in which the interaction takes place through choices of mood elements such as topic and finite. There is a close complementarily between mood and modality and it is for this reason that the two systems have been analyzed together. Finally, the findings relate to the overall meaning-making and ideology-conveying resources of the text as a whole. The selected webnews consist in a set of texts. They were English articles with the general purpose to observe how Indonesian was portrayed in the BBC International Website or by the world.

Abstract

This paper concentrates on the spatial deixis and its morphological structures in Mǝriaq-mǝriqu dialect of Sasak language. It includes in a typological study with qualitative method. This research employs two forms of data; primary data and secondary data. The primary data include the information obtained from the informants from every dialect. Secondary data are the data obtained from any documents of Sasak language such as folklore. There are two methods of data collection; field linguistic method and library method. Of the two methods, there are two techniques used in collecting data: Observation and interview. The results of this study accommodated all types of demonstratives by Diessel (1999) and Dixon (1988) and discover some new types contributing to the theory. The types of spatial deixis in this dialect are pronominal, adnominal, quantifier, intensifier, identificational, adverbial, verbal, and referential. In term of morphological structure, the demonstrative in this dialect is constructed of some affixes and the combination of two or more spatial deixis. Nominal demonstrative usually becomes stem of other demonstratives. Quantifier is constructed of prefix ‘se-‘plus manner demonstrative adverb(MDA). Intensifier is constructed of prefix ‘s-‘ plus pronominal, LDA is constructed of prefix ‘n-‘ plus pronominal for proximal, MDA is constructed of prefix ‘mer-‘ and ‘m-‘ plus pronominals, verbal demonstrative is constructed of confix ‘pe-q’ plus MDA, Referential demonstrative is constructed of MDA plus suffix ‘-q’.

Abstract

the social conditions of Indians as Native Americans for the treatment of white people who are immigrants from Europe in America. This research explores aspects of the reality of Indian relations with European immigrants in America that have an impact on discriminatory actions against Indians in John Steinbeck's novel The Pearl. Social facts are traced through fiction as part of the genetics of literary works. The research method used is genetic structuralism, a literary research method that traces the origin of the author's imagination in his fiction. The imagination is considered a social reality that reflects events in people's lives. The research data consist of primary data in the form of literary works, and secondary data are some references that document the background of the author's life and social reality. The results of this research indicate that racist acts as part of American social facts are documented in literary works. The situation of poor Indians and displaced people in slums is a social fact witnessed by John Steinbeck as the author of the novel The Pearl through an Indian fictional character named Kino. Racism is an act of white sentiment that discriminates against Native Americans, namely the Indian community.

Abstract

The fundamental aim of the present study is to analyze the pragmatic aspects of the English social media comments on posts related to online learning at the time of Covid19. The aim in this socio-pragmatic study is to identify the maxims and strategies used by English commenters and the extent to which the commenters follow or flout these and strategies when commenting on posts related to online learning at time of COVID 19. It also aims at investigating how the social media, as a new marvelous vital trend, contributes to increase language and linguistic variation in people's online comments. To achieve these the researchers analyze 25 Facebook comments based on two adopted models; Grice's (1975) maxims and Crystal's strategies (2001) to build a comprehensive picture about the role of age, gender, social status on the comments. The results of the analysis show that both models are applicable and sometimes flouted. Some commenters flout more than two maxims in the same comment and the same is true regarding Crystal's model. It has been found that comments are highly constrained by social factor, while age and gender do not have great significant effect.

Abstract

The genre analysis has become a critical study in pragmatic which forms the dialogic interaction that manifest written academic discourse socially and culturally. The aims of this study is to describe the pattern and variation of moves that appear from the undergraduate thesis abstracts at a specific college in the Bone Region. The implications of this study on educational written materials are included. Data collection comprised 45 abstracts as samples consist of 3 cohorts (2015, 2016 and 2017) of university students, each with 15 abstracts. A structure studied by Hyland (2005) was used to explain the different trends in the abstracts. Unstructured interviews with and evaluation of the students were carried out to better understand the writing skills of the students. Then data were analyzed using content analysis. The results show that most abstracts involve rhetorical gestures similar to the previous study. The moves include an initial statement, a clarification of intent and confirmation of the results and explanations for the research 's significance. The results also indicated that university students are more mindful of the logical series. Rhetorical movements and language properties needed in abstract academic learning. The aim, methodology and findings of the related paper are the most abstracts. These findings are compatible with previous studies and show that future scientists based on movement analysis that should explore the link between movement analysis results and academic teaching content. The results justify such pedagogic consequences that indicate that the student has an interest in current education research to change the teaching materials.

Abstract

The 2011 science fiction novel of Drew Magary named The Postmortal drew a world wherein the cure for aging has been scientifically and technologically advanced through gene therapy by the medical practitioner Graham Otto. This paper hinges on the ‘vanishing mediator’ as a theoretical framework synthesized by Kahambing which runs in four distinct stages for its entire process, namely, to: a.) retroactively trace the intervention, b.) evaluate the intervention, c.) identify the mediator, and d.) locate the vanishing point. Applying this to the movement, the methodological structure of the paper is divided into four parts. First, it provides a primary discussion of the social “normal” condition of people in the novel to traceably locate the intervention made by Graham Otto, a doctor, to completely halt the aging process. Second, the researcher presented a technological intervention of gene therapy in the character of Doctor Otto in making a scientific cure for aging. Third, the said intervention is argued to be a vanishing mediator. Finally, it gave a full account of the major implications of a Bostromean transhuman process and its traces in the world at large.
