Abstract

This thesis explores William Shakespeare characters in one cinematic production of Marc Norman & Tom StoppardShakespeare in Love (SIL) and the realization in Indonesian version. The main problem is to discuss the WS’ characters construction through language found in ST and the realization in TT with a specific objective to analyze how the manner of William Shakespeare (WS) is constructed, through the way he models his experiences of both internal and external world in language. This is qualitative and quantitative research which is based on text analysis. A descriptive and comparative analysis is conducted to compare both analyzed texts. The research method goes through 3 main stages starting from data classification, analysis and discussion. The theories applied in this study are: translation equivalence suggested by Catford, and Translation as retextualization by Coulthard and Halliday theory within the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics, called the ideational function which is realized by the transitivity system. The finding suggests that as far the transitivity system of SIL in ST and TT is concerned; WS’ most significant characteristics were kept unchanged. There were moments in which some changes took place because of the structure of the language in which the text was retextualised. Nevertheless, these changes, at a micro level, do not modify the characters’ construction at a macro level.Through the analysis of the transitivity patterns, it can be said the ST and the TT selected and realized similar meanings thus constructing similar pictures of the main protagonist, William Shakespeare.

Abstract

This paper explores translation shift of verb and sentence style from English into Bahasa Indonesian. The main problem is to discuss what kinds of shift found in Source Text (ST) and the realization in Target Text (TT). Shift is needed in translating and there also some factors play important role in the process of transferring. This is qualitative research which is base on text analysis. A descriptive analysis is conducted to compare both analyzed texts. The method goes thru 3 main stages starting from data classification, analysis and discussion. The theories applied in this study are: translation equivalence suggested by Cadford, and focuses on level shifts, where the SL item at one linguistic level (e.g. grammar) has a TL equivalent at a different level (e.g. lexis) and to investigate what decisions are made during the translation, and what is directing those decisions. A thorough analysis of selected texts will connect the differences in translational behavior to the norms that govern this behavior. The finding suggests that there some shifts in translating English to Bahasa Indonesia. In Bahasa Indonesia passive is more common style in writing report or scientific article.

Abstract

Abstract

The research examined the relationship between cultural ritual, linguistic, and ecology in the context of ecotourism. It aimed to encourage, stimulate, and integrate the use of religious tradition’s terms in understanding and reinterpreting the environment and human relations and its roles. Cultural forms and elements basically had the potential to be used as a tourism commodity, meaning that they could be commodified. The research also related to ecolinguistics, a study that discussed language associated with the environment in which the language grew and developed and how it was used by the community. Cultural rituals as a tourism commodity could be a means of maintaining culture and language even though they were commodified for tourism purposes. Thus, the religious-cultural structure of Rebo Buntung and Tetulaq Tamperan should be packaged following its original structure as a medium for cultural and language preservation but also packaged as attractively as possible with a contextual structure that adapted to tourism sites so that could attract tourists. This ecospiritual commodification was expected to be able to budge the economy of the surrounding community. The research was conducted at Ketapang Beach, Tanjung Menangis, Pringgabaya district, and East Lombok where Rebo Buntung ritual was carried out. The research applied a qualitative descriptive method. For this reason, the data obtained were analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis by describing the data obtained from an informant. On that basis, it can be concluded that the practice of ecospriritual commodification can have multiple effects, not only to preserve culture and language but also to maintain community harmony with nature, as well as improve the economy of the local community.

Abstract

This research aims to illuminate the pragmatic function of politeness in the world of advertising as a rarely-talked-about communicative act. Politeness theory presented by Leech (1983) and analyzed by Brown and Levinson (1987) in the form of taxonomy is known to be one of the most important factors for a successful communication and  it is highly guaranteed as the most persuasive instrument. The main focus of this research is to explore the politeness strategies adopted and adapted in English and Indonesian ads and to find their persuasive factors by comparing and contrasting them. To reach the objective, a corpus of  100  advertisements both in English and Bahasa Indonesia were collected from some magazines which are mainly available at the main tourism spots in Lombok. Each advertisement containing words was then analyzed in term of category and sub-category of politeness strategy in the two languages. The frequency of each strategywas then computed. From the research, it was ultimately found out that the politeness strategy, based on the Brown and Levinson’s  taxonomy, indicated that English ads exploits more Positive politeness strategies while in Indonesian ads tend to use Negative politeness strategies.

Abstract

Computational thinking (CT) or in Indonesian called computational thinking is a method to train thinking skills in solving problems with reasoning and analysis, initially computational thinking is always related to computers. In fact, computational computing does not teach how to use computers or things that are always related to but the thought processes used to support problem science in all disciplines, mathematics, science, social studies, and languages, in this case the socialization of CT in learning English and Indonesian. Computational thinking can teach from an early age, starting from the elementary school level (SD) or the equivalent (MI) by making questions in English and Indonesian subjects by providing examples of simple problem solving found in basic language lessons. Through this community service, you can socialize CT to MI and MTs secondary school teachers in Central Lombok, the content is so that teachers can enter or enter CT into the subject they are taught, so that students are familiar with problems solving problems by means of computational thinking , the sustainable survival of computational thinking, a problem can be resolved properly, quickly and optimally.

Abstract

Currently school teachers, especially in Mataram City, West Lombok Regency, Central Lombok and East Lombok are not familiar with learning with the concept of computational thinking (Computational Thinking) so they cannot teach their students how to think computationally as an approach to solving existing problems. Considering one of the demands of the industrial revolution 4.0, where problem solving skills are one of the abilities that students must have. In this case, these abilities need to be taught by teachers at school. Therefore, this problem must be solved immediately by increasing the ability of teachers in learning computational thinking so that teachers can apply computational thinking learning methods to their students. From the problems listed, it is necessary to approach how to train teachers to teach computationally thinking to their students. In Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, to apply Computational Thinking (CT) in formulating problems and revealing solutions, namely through socialization and training and mentoring of free computational thinking materials to teachers in schools in Lombok, NTB which was held in the form of CT Bebras socialization activities, which is expected to help introduce and apply Computational Thinking (CT) material as a creative learning method in schools in NTB.

Abstract

The primary aim of this study is to investigate the influence of ideology on news. The goals are to determine the interpersonal characteristics of the text and to link them to the ideologies that they can realize. The clause's mood structure is the means by which the fundamental differences are realized at the lexicogrammatical level within the contextual register variable of Tenor. Specifically, participants in an interaction encode their perception (or at least their ostensible perception) of both their relationships with others and the social and situational sense in which the interaction takes place through choices of mood elements such as topic and finite. There is a close complementarily between mood and modality and it is for this reason that the two systems have been analyzed together. Finally, the findings relate to the overall meaning-making and ideology-conveying resources of the text as a whole. The selected webnews consist in a set of texts. They were English articles with the general purpose to observe how Indonesian was portrayed in the BBC International Website or by the world.

Abstract

News is a specific text of media discourse that has attracted special interest. This study gains insight into how linguistic choices shape the representation of information in news stories. Because they involve decision by definition, choices have an impact on the news angles and consequentially on the content and the message conveyed in an article. Specific structures, such as passive sentences, are not only determined by simple stylistic preference, but are also the fruit of linguistic choices. The choice of such constructions in place of factually equivalent or similar ones, gives a sentence a particular direction and indicates a linguistic strategy in the (re)presentation of the facts and the speaker’s attitude. A study on an integral aspect of language use such as linguistic choices applied to news stories is of particular interest because of the essential role language plays in media and communication in general. More specifically, the present thesis is situated in the particular context of foreign news reporting, which involves also editorial choices. The main theoretical framework of this study lies on systemic functional linguistics, from which the concept of linguistic choices originates, and discourse analysis, in its particular application to news texts. This study investigates linguistic choices through the systemic functional linguistic analysis of New about Indonesia in BBC International webnews. The selected web news consists in set BBC world news. The news contains an Indonesia News. The general purpose is to observe how Indonesian was portrayed in the BBC International Website or it can be said how Indonesian is portrayed by the world
