Abstract

The growing modern lifestyle has created a new habit for parents, which is traveling such as traveling with their baby. However, this situation presents various challenges, especially in meeting the needs of the baby. To accommodate these needs, parents often use conventional baby bags that are considered less effective because the compartments are not well organized, which can make it difficult for parents when they have to change diapers immediately. Given the high frequency of urination in infants, it is very important to change diapers regularly to prevent rashes. In public spaces such as Malioboro tourist area, which lacks mother and baby room facilities, parents often have difficulty finding a place with adequate privacy to change diapers. This situation forces them to look for a special space (nursery room) that may be far from their location. This design uses the design thinking method to understand user needs. Based on the results of the data analysis that has been carried out, a diaper bag product design is needed that has an organized compartment arrangement and a means to change baby diapers in the form of a mat equipped with a privacy cover feature. This research resulted in 5 variants of diaper bag products with the main characteristic of creating privacy in public spaces that lack facilities when changing baby diapers.

Abstract

Human beings are the social species that relies on social interaction to survive and thrive. The COVID-19 pandemic hinders this process and made the basic human social needs was put on halt. When these needs cannot be met, humans will use alternative social inputs sources, one of which is through the adoptions of pets. The COVID-19 pandemic is the biggest factor in pet adoption in 2020 (Morgan L, et al. 155). The increase of pet adoption was caused by the increasing feeling of loneliness due to governments restrictions on social activities. The COVID-19 also causes the rise of remote working activities around the world. Interior Design prioritizes human relationships in a space which is an important factor in making a design that could provide a deeper connection for the users. In a workspace, productivity was supported by comfort, especially when working from home. The designing process uses Design Thinking method to produce the appropriate design for the users. The need for integrated pet furniture and human furniture deepens each year, thus the demand for integrated design was prevalent. To create comfortable working situation for pets and human the research was conducted to produce the furniture that could fulfil the need. The results of this study are to produce four different furniture product set that would benefits the user and their respective pets.

Abstract

This study analyzes the influence of shooting angles in running sports photography on the purchase intention of photo works in Surabaya. Visual aesthetics serve as the main focus, emphasizing elements such as shooting angles, composition, expression, moment, and point of interest. Running events today are not only seen as fitness activities but also as a form of self-expression often captured through photography—especially for sharing on social media. This creates a symbiotic relationship between runners and photographers: runners seek compelling documentation, while photographers offer photography services with commercial value. This study adopts a qualitative approach through visual analysis of photographic works. An experimental method was applied by capturing images from various shooting angles—including high angle, eye level, and low angle—to observe consumer responses to the photos. A total of 29 photo buyers at the Surabaya Medic Air Run 2024 were involved to find out their visual preferences. The findings show that the high angle shooting perspective is more favored than the others, as it effectively captures runners’ movement patterns, track layout, and reduces distractions from foreground and background elements. Additionally, appropriate composition, subject expression, and timing significantly enhance the visual appeal of the photos.

Abstract

The increase in population in Indonesia has resulted in a reduction in the availability of residential land. This made an impact such as residential space becoming smaller. Even though space is limited, millennial families still need to do lots of activities because of their tendency to do several jobs at once. In dealing with these problems, Open Plan concept is generally used. One application of the Open Plan concept is the use of bar tables in exchange to dining tables because their relatively small size and multifunctional. There isn’t much research on bar tables other than for cooking. Apart from that, bar tables and barstools on the market have the potential to be improved to suit millennial families’ needs better. Thus, through this research it is hoped that we’ll be able to design a bar table and barstool that has more functions, like for interacting with family, implementing Work from Home (WFH), additional cooking areas, and optimizing space limitations. The method used in this research is a qualitative research method and User Centered Design design method. The result of this design is a bar table that uses a lift-up system, features sockets and shelves, also barstools with foldable seat backs.

Abstract

Indonesia is experiencing a significant transformation in its industrial sector, with packaging emerging as a crucial element of industrial growth. This study investigates recent trends in packaging based on industrial design applications in Indonesia from 2001 to 2023. The methodology involves analyzing data from specific databases of industrial design applications, focusing on the number of applications, their origin, and their classification according to the Locarno system. The analysis includes quantitative data on the frequency and distribution of design applications and qualitative insights from case studies. The results reveal a robust domestic industry with many applications from local entities such as research institutions and companies. The dominant categories include flexible packaging (bags, sachets, tubes) and rigid packaging (bottles, large containers), catering to various sectors like food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals. International interest is also notable, with significant contributions from global corporations, highlighting Indonesia's strategic importance in the global packaging market. From 2001 to 2023, the number of domestic design applications related to packaging in Indonesia increased from 197 to 780, while foreign applications grew from 37 to 221. Although domestic filings remained higher overall, the foreign share peaked at 40.2% in 2020, reflecting a growing international interest in Indonesia's packaging design sector.

Abstract

The strategy for developing Khombouw bark craft products in Asei Village, Jayapura Regency, has not yet been optimized to become an interactive learning medium for forming early childhood interest in learning and building character education based on local Papuan wisdom. This research explores the mechanical properties by testing the bending strength of Khombouw bark material as a primary material for making character dolls for Papuan children. This research uses a Research and Development (R&D) development approach, including existing, archetype, and experimental studies. The process of assembling the prototype doll from Khombouw bark uses basic patterns with manual sewing techniques and is reinforced with composite materials to give a handmade impression. The results of this research show that natural fiber in the form of bark from the Khombouw tree has a high level of elasticity that can be applied in the design of volumetric product construction. Visualization of educational dolls using natural colors (wood brown or reddish brown) produced from the surface of Khombouw bark material, which is displayed on child figures by adapting the biological characteristics of Papuans (curly hair), as well as traditional clothing such as crowns, noken and tassels to build Papuan cultural identity.

Abstract

Product design faces challenges where designers need to know the parameters before the design process to minimize product development time, and products that are not suitable for manufacturing cause losses. This research is a narrative literature review of the integration of Axiomatic Design (AD), Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA), and Concurrent Engineering (CE) to see the potential of integrating the three methods in product design. Eight journals from the last decade were analyzed to evaluate the impact of integration on product design. Results showed that the integration of the three methods was able to reduce the required design iterations along with a reduction in manufacturing costs and assembly time. The integration was able to identify and break down functional requirements with cross-functional collaboration from the early stages of design as well as streamlining the product and assembly process. In addition, the integration also provides manufacturing information for designers so that the product design is compliant from the manufacturing side. The combination of the three methods results in products that are easier to manufacture, reduce lead times and product costs. Therefore, this approach is highly recommended for the manufacturing industry to improve cost efficiency, time, and product quality.

Abstract

Train travel is a popular mode of transportation in Indonesia, as proved by the increasing number of railway passengers in recent years. Railway stations serve as a crucial touchpoint for the passengers. Current studies on railway station facilities in Indonesia mostly evaluate the service quality and have yet to specifically address users’ basic needs and activities, and its influence on railway station design. This article discusses the findings of the basic needs and passengers’ activity mapping, utilising a mixed-method approach that integrates quantitative data obtained through passenger questionnaires (n=159) and qualitative data from observations and interviews (n=15). The results show that the priority basic needs of Indonesian intercity train passengers are: (1) safety, (2) reliability, (3) ease, (4) comfort, (5) cleanliness, and (6) responsiveness. These basic needs are then mapped onto the two main activity phases of intercity train passengers, namely: (1) departure phase: pre-boarding, boarding, and post-boarding, and (2) arrival phase: to continue the journey to the final destination. Identifying the basic needs and activities of intercity train passengers can provide a foundational framework for designing a railway station facility, thereby enhancing the overall passenger experience.
