Abstract

Although reading has been learned by students since they start to learn the English language but it still becomes the most difficult skill to be acquired than speaking, writing, and listening. It is a possibility caused by the students have a limitation of knowledge about reading roles, different learning styles, lazy to read, and low motivation for effective reading because of a too-long passage and different types of text. Therefore, students must be serious to acquire this skill. In this article, the writers would like to introduce a suitable approach for teaching reading using mind mapping techniques. The results of the data, the researcher concludes that the students’ have some difficulties in identifying reading skills and understanding the mind mapping, many of the students have difficulties in this factor because the result shows a high number of percentage give the answer very not good and not good. The last is the result of learning English, most of the students have enough understood about teaching and learning English. After reading this article, the writer expects that this article can help English teachers to apply suitable approach for teaching reading of English texts.

Abstract

Although the online English learning platform currently is interesting and entertaining and it can improve language acquisition, pronunciation, four integrated skills but it still becomes difficult to be used in English learning. Therefore, people must be mastering high technology to support their daily life and get much information instantly and accurately. In this article, the writer would like to introduce a suitable platform in English learning. English is considered as an international language (EIL) and the purpose is to facilitate communication of ideas, thoughts, feelings, knowledge, and culture, the language is a medium. Moreover, English can be taught by using Memrise Application in order to encourage students to learn English. train students in Communicative Competence and optimize the effectiveness of English Language Teaching. After reading this article, the writer expects that this article can help English teachers to apply this platform for English teaching in Indonesia. For this reason, teachers need to develop strategies that are appropriate to the characteristics of millennial students and be able to make it reach the competencies specified in the learning objectives. In this case, the use of media is also needed in innovative learning. Innovative learning using learning strategies and the use of media is very important to create effective English language learning, especially the current COVID-19 pandemic situation.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the meta-discourse feature mostly used and the difference between interactive and interactional categorize among Local, National and International Journals. This research was a corpora analysis employed journal articles as the object of the research. Data were collected purposive random sampling with a total of sampling were 30 articles taken three journals. The data is a cropped introduction section to be made a Microsoft file and processed by using the AntConce Application. Data were analyzed using a qualitative method by focusing on the use of the meta-discourse feature and different interactive and interactional categorized by Hyland’s (2005). The results show that: 1) The meta-discourse feature that is mostly used in each journal is interactive. The interactive has the same tendency used among Local, National and International journals. 2) The transition categorizes the most frequent in the Local, National and International Journal. 3) The meta-discourse feature that is least used was found in the Asian EFL Journal, the frame markers that are least used were found in Joall journals, and the endophoric that is the least used was found in Joall journals. 4) There are significant differences in the use of interactive and interactional in each journal. So it can be concluded that each writer has known and used meta-discourse in writing articles, the use of meta-discourse is not influenced by the level of journals, both Local, National and International Journal, but is influenced by the writer competence in expressing his thoughts, and the culture of the author's environment. Besides, the articles published in each journal are influenced by the editor of the journal itself.

Abstract

The researcher found that the students still had difficulties in finding character value, problem and difficulties with previous knowledge and metacognition in preliminary research. Therefore, objective of this research is to identify the factors that cause students’ difficulties in finding character value of narrative text. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative. The subject of this research was students of XI MA Muhammadiyah Bengkulu, who had the lowest score in preliminary research. The technique of collecting data was by analyzing interview and giving questionnaire to the students. The result showed the factors that causes students’ difficulties in finding character value were exception in the decoding process, previous knowledge, motivation or perseverance, high level cognitive skills and metacognition. Based on the result of questionnaire, it can be concluded that most of students were fluent because they often read narrative text, so they can read the text in English easily. Then, most of students had problem in their previous knowledge, so they felt difficult to determine the character value. Although most of students do not have problems in motivation or perseverance because they like to read narrative text, they do not know how to find the character value in narrative text because they do not understand the story, so they felt difficult to determine the character value. Furthermore, most of students have problems in their metacognition, because they must read the narrative text repeatedly to determine the character value. In short, they must summarize the narrative text to determine the character value, because they felt difficult to determine the character value if they do not summarize the text.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to get empirical evidenceof the improving students’ reading comprehension of narrative text through suggestopedia method. The method of this research was classroom action research which was conducted in two cycles. The subject of this research was the Second Grade Students of SMA Pesantren Pancasila Bengkulu at Academic Year 2017/2018 with total number of students 18. The research instruments were the observation sheet, interview guidelines, questionnaire and test form. Based on the results of data analysis of pre-test and post-test shown the significant improvement. The average score of pre-test was 54,05. It means two students’ score could pass the KKM. It was 11,11% passed the learning outcome . The average score of post-test 1 was 72,94. It proved that 44,44% students passed KKM. The average score of post-test 2 was 82,77. Then, it was obtained that the percentage of students who could get the score above the KKM in post-test 2 was 100%. Based on the learning activities which have occurred the enhancing from the first to second cycle. From this research findings, it showed that suggestopedia method could improve the students’ reading comprehension of narrative text.

Abstract

In the 21st century, the development of technology has made a lot of influence on the educational process. Technology brings many new approaches to the classroom such as multimodal teaching. The current study intended to review the implementation and effectiveness of multimodal teaching in the context of English language teaching. The review followed Aveyard's (2010) design, with the criteria of selecting the articles used as sources of data are research articles from journals. The result of the review found that the characteristics, benefits, and procedures of multimodal teaching vary greatly according to the needs and abilities of teachers to design the teaching and learning activities. The review also found that multimodal teaching affected students' motivation, productive skills, reading skills, and learning autonomy. This study suggests the implementation of multimodal teaching in ELT classrooms.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the figurative language in Michael Jackson song lyrics. Therefore, the researchers formulated a question as the problem. As follows: (1) what are the kinds of figurative language in Michael Jackson’s song lyrics? (2) What is the dominant type of figurative language in Michael Jackson’s song lyrics? This research used Perrine theories to analysis kinds of figurative language in Michael Jackson song lyrics. There are 12 types of figurative language according to Perrine they are: simile, metaphor, personification, apostrophe, synecdoche, metonymy, symbol, allegory, paradox, hyperbole/overstatement, understatement, and irony. The researchers used qualitative design because data are collected by using document in form of word and a procedure of systematic analysis of context text (words, phrase, sentences, document, etc), analysis content by qualitative enable researchers to understand the text by grouping words that have same meaning into categories. The researchers used ten song from the website Genius.com as an instrument to find the data to be analyzed based types of figurative language. The researchers finding showed that are 6 types of figurative language that found in Michael Jackson’s Songs namely: personification, apostrophe, metaphor, hyperbole, simile and symbol. While, there are 6 types of figurative language weren’t found in Michael Jackson’s Songs namely: synecdoche, metonymy, allegory, paradox, understatement, and irony. After analyzing all the data the researchers found the types of figurative language are dominantly used in Michael Jackson’s songs are hyperbole consists of 11 sentences (30%).

Abstract

Most educational institutions use online learning platforms during the Covid-19 pandemic. One of the platforms frequently used is Zoom. This research aimed to describe the diploma 3 pharmacy students’ perceptions of the use of Zoom in learning English. The data were collected through a questionnaire and interviews. 43 diploma 3 of pharmacy students at STIFI Bhakti Pertiwi Palembang participated in this research. Since this research explored diploma 3 of pharmacy students' perception coming from the students' experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic, descriptive research by using qualitative technique was applied. The result of this research was found that diploma 3 pharmacy students got positive perception toward Zoom application usage in learning English because it was accessible and effective. Although the electricity disturbance, internet quota, and the use of smartphone were sources of students’ problem in learning English, the diploma 3 pharmacy students agreed that Zoom application were effective and efficient in terms of time, place, and energy. Moreover, they also agreed that Zoom application could help them to improve language skills and to minimize bashfulness in virtual class interaction.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to analyze how students’ ability in applying modulation technique in translating collocation from the novel “The lost Symbol” by Dan Brown. The research was a content analysis of descriptive qualitative. The population was the 6thsemester students of PBI IAIN Bengkulu in academic year 2019 with a total number of students 120 students. Out of this population, 25 students were taken as respondent, there were refresented from each class. The data were collected by using translation test which was contained six types of collocation. The data was found that the result of students’ average score in collocation that researched as follow: Adjective and noun ware 60% (average) ,Noun and noun were 49% (very poor), Noun and verb were 41.6% (very poor), Verb and expression with preposition were 22,88% (very poor). The finding showed that there that the students’ability is dominant in collocation type of adjective and noun because to translate it just simple and the phrase of word is most familiar in their activities not also in translation subject but other skill language material. In other hand, the students’ low ability in translate collocation of Verb and expression with prepositionbecause they could not just use the literal translation but they have to adapt it or changenged their point of view and use their cognitive and focus on the context, which make relevant and coherent.However, overall the average of students ability must be improved it with learn more and lecturer must be able to focus on students’ weakness in applying translation technique especially on modulation to get the progress by the students’ translation well.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to find out whether or not there is any significant correlation between reading and writing skills at Informatics Program University of Bina Insan in Academic Year of 2020/2021. The problem is there any significant correlation between students’ reading skill and their writing skill at Informatics Program University of Bina Insan in Academic Year of 2020/2021?. There were two hypotheses in this study, null hypothesis (Ho) is stated that there is no significant correlation between the first students’ reading skill and writing skill at Informatics Program University of Bina Insan the Academic Year of 2020/2021 (robtained<rtable) and alternative hypothesis (Ha) is states that there’s significant correlation between the first students’ reading and writing skills at Informatics Program University of Bina insan Academic Year of 2020/2021 (robtained<rtable). In this study, descriptive correlation method was used. The population of this study was the first students at Informatics Program University of Bina Insan Academic Year of 2020/2021. The sample of this study was all class which consisted of 34 students. The sampling technique used in this study was total sampling. In order to collect the data, the documentation was used. To analyze the data, the Pearson Product Moment formula was applied. The result of this research was 0.473. While, critical value of rtable was 0.349 at the level of significant 0.05 or 95% in two tailed test. It indicated that there was moderate correlation. The null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It means that there was moderate correlation between students’ reading and writing skills at Informatics Program University of Bina in Academic Year of 2020/2021.
