Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to see whether the use of peer review and free writing techniques was effective in improving students’ writing achievement in learning English as a Foreign Language. A non-randomized control-group pretest-posttest design was used. Out of the tenth graders SMA YPI Tunas Bangsa Palembang, 60 students were taken as the sample. There were three groups, each of which consisted of 20 students. The data were collected by asking students to write a composition that was evaluated by using Conventional Standard Written English rubric containing six aspects namely content, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions. The data obtained were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. The findings showed that the two techniques were effective in improving the students’ writing achievement because the students were guided to check their friends' work and were encouraged to elaborate more ideas that they wanted to write freely.

Abstract

Writing is sometimes neglected taught by the teacher due to the limitation of the time provided. Besides, in teaching writing, teacher tends to avoid the religious values in teaching writing persuasive text in order to build students’ character. However, students are required to master writing in order to express the idea or information in communication. Therefore, this  study  is an attempt to study the religious values in teaching writing persuasive text. The population of this study was  all of the eleventh graders of SMA Negeri 1 Kandis  Ogan Ilir. The samples were chosen by purposive sampling method.  As a result, two classes consisting of thirty students  in each classes were selected as the samples. The qualitative approach was used in this study and  observation  is the main instrument used to get the  data about the process of teaching writing persuasive text. The observation done from the beginning to ending of  teaching and learning process of writing persuasive text. Based on the observation, it was indicated  that the students were interested in learning writing persuasive text and got some religious values to build their characters. In addition, the students were eager to write persuasive text because of interesting materials. They could explore their idea freely by writing the main information and writing information explaining the religious values in writing persuasive text. By teaching writing persuasive text including the religious values, hopefully the teacher of English can select the material and content of the subject matter which infused the religious values during the classroom.

Abstract

Many researches have shown the facts that the students’ skills in writing can be improved by having a good reading habit. It was convinced that the students reading habit has great impact on the improvement of students’ writing ability. The students who read extensively will acquire more vocabularies that lead them to have greater proficiency in writing. Therefore, this study was purposed to know whether reading habit of the eighth graders of SMPN 6 Kayuagung was significantly correlated to their writing skill. By means of Purposive sampling, 124 students of the whole number of the population were selected as the sample. A correlational study was applied. A questionnaire and written test were distributed to get the data. Twenty items of a ready-made questionnaire were used to know students’ habit in reading and a writing test was administered to measure students’ writing skill. The writing test was reliable because its reliability coefficient was 0.942. In data analysis, Pearson Product Moment Correlation coefficient on SPSS 20 was used. The findings revealed that r-obtained (0.685) was bigger than the value of r-table (0.176) at p-value which was less than 0.05. Thus, the formulated hypotheses were proved. In other words, there was a significant correlation between reading habit and writing skill of the eighth graders at SMPN 6 Kayuagung.

Abstract

This study aimed to  find out grammatical errors  in writing personal letter and the most grammatical errors made by the eleventh graders of SMA Negeri 5 Ogan Komering Ilir. This study used descriptive qualitative research method. The subject of the study was the eleventh social one students of SMA Negeri 5 Ogan Komering Ilir in the academic year of 2020/2021. The technique of collecting the data were a writing testusing google form. To check the validity and reliability of the test, a triangulation method was applied. The information was presented in a descriptive manner and assessed using a percentage calculation. The calculations presented that the students made 12.5% sentence pattern errors, 24.1% tense errors, 9.17%pronoun errors, 2.5% preposition errors, 20% punctuation errors, and 31.66% spelling errors.The most dominant of grammatical errors made by students was error of spelling (31.66%).

Abstract

Abstract: Today, technology and literacy in the area of education 4.0 has increasingly been used in many language classes. The changes in literacy conception demands the capabilities of teachers and students in utilizing digital tools in the classroom activities. Computer as one of the digital tools offers teachers some new interesting strategies for teaching reading com- prehension. Unfortunately, to comprehend a reading text in English is not easy. Many students face some problems in comprehending a text. They need to read many times to comprehend the text. The problem in reading comprehension does not only derive from students, but it is also influenced by teachers’ teaching methods or strategies, and the quality of the teachers them- selves. Moreover, reading without interest can inhibit readers to comprehend the texts well. Thus, Word Splash strategy is believed as one of the strategies that can decrease the student’s problem in comprehending the content of the text and eventually make students love reading. Keywords: education 4.0, digital tools, word splash strategy Abstrak: Saat ini, teknologi dan literasi di era Pendidikan 4.0 telah digunakan dalam kelas-ke- las pembelajran Bahasa. Perubahan terhadap konsep literasi meminta guru dan siswa untuk memaksimalkan perangkat digita dalam kegiatan kelas. Komputer sebagai salah satu alat yang menawarkan berbagai strategi baru kepada guru untuk mengajarkan pemahaman memba- ca. Sayangnya, untuk memahami teks bacaan Bahasa Inggris tidaklah mudah. Banyak siswa meng¬hadapi banyak basalah dalam memahami isi bacaan. Mereka perlu membca teks be- rulang-ulang demi mahami bacaannya. Masalah dalam memahami bacaan ini tidak hanya diala- mi oleh siswa saja, namun juga dipengaruhi oleh metode dan strategi mengajar guru, dan kual- itas guru terse¬but. Terlebih lagi, membaca tanpa diiringi dengan minat, dapat mempengaruhi pemahaman siswa terhadap teks tersebut. Abstract

The simple present tense is the most basic form that must be mastered by second-semester students of the Islamic University Ogan Komering Ilir Kayuagung. In addition, students are also required to write paragraphs using the simple present tense based on the syllabus. However, most students still have difficulty using the simple present tense in writing paragraphs. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the most dominant student errors in using the simple present tense. This research uses descriptive qualitative research methods. The research subjects involved the second-semester students of English Language Education at the Islamic University of Ogan Komering Ilir Kayuagung. The research instruments used a written test. Based on the calculation, it was found that 56.89% error of misformation, 15.51% error of addition, 13.79% error of omission, and 13.79% error of misordering made by the students.

Abstract

Most educational institutions use online learning platforms during the Covid-19 pandemic. One of the platforms frequently used is Zoom. This research aimed to describe the diploma 3 pharmacy students’ perceptions of the use of Zoom in learning English. The data were collected through a questionnaire and interviews. 43 diploma 3 of pharmacy students at STIFI Bhakti Pertiwi Palembang participated in this research. Since this research explored diploma 3 of pharmacy students' perception coming from the students' experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic, descriptive research by using qualitative technique was applied. The result of this research was found that diploma 3 pharmacy students got positive perception toward Zoom application usage in learning English because it was accessible and effective. Although the electricity disturbance, internet quota, and the use of smartphone were sources of students’ problem in learning English, the diploma 3 pharmacy students agreed that Zoom application were effective and efficient in terms of time, place, and energy. Moreover, they also agreed that Zoom application could help them to improve language skills and to minimize bashfulness in virtual class interaction.

Abstract

This research aimed to promote the reading achievement of the first STIK Bina Husada Palembang midwifery students using the Hamburger strategy. A quasi-experimental method was used, with a non-equivalent group design for the pretest and posttest. The samples consisted of 38 students from STIK Bina Husada Palembang's first-semester midwifery students. A written test with multiple-choice questions was utilized to collect data. The test was found to be both valid and reliable. The value of t-obtained (5.57) was greater than t-table (2.02) at the significant level of p0.05, according to the results of the independent t-test. It was deduced that the Hamburger strategy could promote students’ reading achievement. It meant that the Hamburger strategy could help students improve their reading skills, particularly in recounting text. The Hamburger strategy helped students to stimulate their memory to learn, retain a text, and store information from the text in their long-term memory so that they could remember the information and comprehend the text properly.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find the difficult skills in TOEFL reading text faced by the students of English Language Education Study Program of Islamic University of Ogan Komering Ilir Kayuagung. The subject of this research was students English Department Isalamic University Ogan Komering Ilir To conduct this study, the descriptive qualitative was used. To collect the data, TOEFL reading test and interview were used. To analyze the data, data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion or interpretation. The result of the study showed that students had difficulty finding main idea questions (66.6%), organization ideas (72%), stated detail question (60%), unstated detail question (62%), implied detail question (75%), transition question (74%), reference (56%), vocabulary (54.5%), question about where in the passage (55%), and tone purpose (63%). It was happened because most of the students did not like reading scientific text, had low motivation, and had limitation vocabulary.

Abstract

The aims of this study are to find out whether there was a significant difference in writing achievement between the students who were taught by using PLEASE strategy and that of those who were not, to find out whether there was an effect of writing interest on the students writing skill to write descriptive text or not, and to find out whether there was an effect of writing interest on the students writing skill who were taught by using PLEASE strategy or not. The samples involved in this study were the seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Kayuagung, South Sumatera which were divided into two groups; experimental and control groups. The data were gathered by using written test and questionnaire and then were analyzed by using t-test and simple linear regression. The results showed that t-obtained (2.57) > t-table (2.0017) with the degree of freedom 54 (df = 56). It could be concluded that there was a significant difference between the students who were taught by using PLEASE strategy and that of those who were not. The next result showed that there was no effect of writing interest on the students' writing skill (the score t-obtained of the writing variable was 1.14 at a significant of 0.26). After the treatment, the score of the writing variable was 3.34 at a significant level of 0.003. It indicated that there was an effect of writing interest on students’ writing skills who were taught using PLEASE strategy. In conclusion, the students who were taught by using PLEASE strategy could be encouraged to have writing interest so that they could write a descriptive text based on the generic structure given.
