Abstract

The need for English proficiency in the hospitality industry has become urgent due to the increasing number of international guests visiting Indonesia for many different purposes business, tourism, and education. In English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses, a needs analysis is essential for instructors to provide their students with the specific language skills they need for their respective jobs. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the needs of hoteliers at a five-star hotel in Jakarta through a semi-structured interview with the English teacher at the hotel as the representative of the Learning and Development (L&D) team. The interview result showed that the hoteliers, especially the Food & Beverage and the Culinary department, urgently needed to improve their English proficiency to communicate with guests and foreign co-workers since they still lacked speaking and listening skills in English. The hoteliers also had a low level of confidence and difficulty in developing ideas. This can be seen from how they tended not to speak much when using the English language. The interview results were transcribed and coded into four categories: necessities, wants, lacks, and learning needs. The results can be taken into consideration for future studies, which involve designing and developing an ESP module specifically tailored for hoteliers.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the induction program for teachers and school principals at SD Negeri Temperak in improving performance and educational professionalism. The approach used is a descriptive qualitative method, with data collection through interviews, observations, and documentation. The results of the study indicate that the induction program has been effective in helping new teachers and school principals adapt to their work environment. New teachers who participated in this program experienced increased self-confidence and teaching skills, enabling them to deliver more optimal lessons to students. On the other hand, new school principals gained a better understanding of school management and leadership, which contributed to the improvement of overall school management effectiveness. However, the implementation of the induction program at SD Negeri Temperak still faces several challenges, such as the lack of experienced mentors, limited time, and minimal support from the local government. To address these challenges, this study suggests several strategies, including specialized training for mentors, the use of online learning platforms, more flexible mentoring schedules, and increased collaboration with the local education office to gain better policy and budget support. By implementing these strategies, it is expected that the induction program can run more effectively and sustainably, ultimately improving the quality of education at SD Negeri Temperak.

Abstract

Science concepts are often abstract and difficult to understand through conventional teaching methods. Therefore, a more interactive and concrete approach is necessary. Students frequently struggle to imagine or visualize invisible processes, which can lead to misconceptions or difficulty in grasping the material. The pop-up book, as a learning medium designed to accommodate students’ characteristics and cognitive needs, can serve as a bridge between abstract concepts and concrete experiences. With its three-dimensional elements that appear as the pages are opened, the pop-up book is expected to enhance visual understanding of complex natural phenomena, such as the water cycle, photosynthesis, and the circulatory system. This study is relevant as it aims to systematically examine how the use of pop-up books can improve visualization abilities and understanding of science concepts among elementary school students. The research used a qualitative approach with a descriptive design, involving 23 third-grade students of SDN Pandanrejo II and a teacher as the research subjects. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation analysis to gain an in-depth understanding of students’ and teachers’ experiences in using pop-up books during the learning process. The results show that 80–92% of students reported improvement in learning science through pop-up books. Around 80% of students felt engaged and interested, and found it easier to visualize and remember abstract concepts. Additionally, 85% showed better understanding of difficult concepts and became more active in discussions. About 78% showed improved critical thinking skills, and 82% felt learning became more student-centered. Thus, using pop-up books in science learning proved effective in enhancing students’ ability to visualize abstract and complex scientific concepts.

Abstract

The development of digital technology and the demands of competency-based education require innovation in assessment systems, particularly in midwifery education. One approach that is increasingly being used is the e-portfolio, which is considered capable of continuously documenting students’ competency achievements. However, there is still a lack of studies that specifically examine the effectiveness of e-portfolios in comprehensively and continuously assessing the competency achievement of midwifery students. This study aims to review the use of e-portfolios as a tool for continuous competency-based assessment in the midwifery education curriculum. This study employs a literature review approach guided by the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) framework. The process of literature search and selection was conducted systematically through academic journal databases, research reports, and relevant articles. The study explores the use of portfolios as an assessment tool, the integration of e-portfolios as part of continuous competency-based assessment, and the evaluation of e-portfolio assessment items in the context of midwifery education. The findings indicate that e-portfolios can enhance student engagement in the learning process, allow for more comprehensive and personalized assessments, and facilitate the continuous development of clinical competencies. The conclusion of this study suggests that e-portfolios hold significant potential as a tool for continuous competency-based assessment in the midwifery education curriculum, provided that adequate infrastructure and appropriate training are available. Recommendations are made for further research and the implementation of best practices in the use of e-portfolios in midwifery education.
