The trend and evolution of training in volleyball: A bibliometric analysis of the last five years

Abstract

Background Problems: The main focus on improving the performance of volleyball players and teams is through training that covers various aspects. Research Objectives: This study aims to analyse and explain trends and developments in the scientific literature regarding volleyball training over the past five years while identifying the most frequently featured training concepts, methods, and techniques in bibliometric studies in the field over the same period. Methods: Publication records between 2019 and 2023 were extracted from Scopus and the Web of Science, after which the bibliographic data set was administered using ScientoPy and VOSviewer. A term search was conducted with the keywords “training” OR “exercise” OR “practice” AND “volleyball”. Findings and Results: Results showed a total of 1.105 papers were published over the past five years, with 2022 recording the highest number of articles. The International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health was the most prolific source, with 45 papers, and Clemente, F. M., was the most published author. The United States was the leading contributor in this research domain with 137 papers. The most frequently highlighted training concepts, methods, and techniques in this topic included vertical jumps, biomechanics, body composition, muscle strength, power, endurance training, injury prevention, agility, balance, and countermovement jumps. Conclusion: The results of this study emphasise the importance of developing training-related knowledge in volleyball. For future research contributions and recommendations, some things that can be taken into consideration are increased interdisciplinary studies, more applied research, use of technology in training, focus on health and injury prevention, comparative studies between countries, and research related to youth training in volleyball. This research provided a strong foundation for further development in understanding and optimising the training of volleyball players in the future.
Enhancement of basic tennis technical skills: Game and drill training methods of male athletes reviewed by age group

Abstract

Background Problems: The lack of variety in exercises applied by coaches makes players feel bored, so they must be given training variations by looking at training methods that significantly improve basic tennis technique skills between game training methods and drills. Research Objectives: This study aims to determine differences in the effect of game and drill training methods on improving basic tennis technical skills based on the age groups of 10-12 years and 13-15 years. Methods: In this context, the method used was experimental research with a 2x2 factorial design. The sample consisted of 24 male athletes in Lampung who were separated into 4 groups. Findings and Results: (i) There are differences in the effect of game practice and drill methods on improving basic tennis technique skills. (ii) There is a difference in improving basic tennis technique skills between the age groups of 10-12 years and 13-15 years. (iii) There is an influence of interaction between training methods and age groups on improving basic tennis technique skills. Conclusion: The age group 10-12 years is more appropriate if given the game training method, and the age group 13-15 years is more appropriate if given the practice training method. The findings of this study provide an important contribution by highlighting the importance of both applied training methods for basic tennis technique. This training method is also adapted for age-based characteristics. Therefore, the recommendation to use game and drill training methods as part of tennis training can help athletes cope with intense playing conditions. Based on the analysis above, the novelty of the research developed by the researcher was two exercise methods compared, two age groups that were sampled, and research instruments using International Tennis Number (ITN) On Court Assessment. Researchers used game and drill training methods that could affect the sample after treatment. Different from previous research, the sample used was male athletes aged 10-15 years.
Enhancing cardiorespiratory and muscular endurance in football players: The impact of a six-week interval training program

Abstract

Background Problem: The integration of interval training programs has emerged as a focal point for enhancing the cardiorespiratory endurance and muscular endurance of players. Research Objectives: The main purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of interval training program on cardiorespiratory endurance and muscular endurance of football payers. Methods: A total of thirty male football players (age 18-24 year) were selected from Imphal West District, Imphal, Manipur (India) who participated in the national level competition. The subjects were randomly assigned into two equal groups, experimental group (n = 15) and control group (n = 15). Before the intervention featuring a six-week interval training program five days of sessions per week (Monday to Friday) each lasting 60 minutes, groups underwent initial assessments through which Cooper’s 12-minute run/walk test for cardiorespiratory endurance and bent-knee sit-ups for muscular endurance. Pre and post-test scores underwent statistical analysis, utilizing descriptive statistics and the Analysis of Covariance test (ANCOVA). The level of significance was set at 0.05 level of confidence. Findings and Results: The experimental group showed improved scores in the cardiorespiratory endurance and muscular endurance compared to the control group (p < 0.05). The mean of the cardiorespiratory endurance and muscular endurance for pretest and posttest of the experimental group were 25.68 ± 25.85 and 27.82 ± 26.25 respectively. The mean of the cardiorespiratory endurance and muscular endurance for pre-test and post-test of the control group were 28.24 ± 28.42 and 32.58 ± 28.80 respectively. Conclusion: It was concluded that the interval training program group had shown significantly improved cardiorespiratory endurance and muscular endurance and the control group had insignificant improvement. It was confirmed that a six weeks interval training program was effective to improve the cardiorespiratory endurance and muscular endurance of football players.

Abstract

Background Problem: Nutrition plays an important role in fitness, yet there is limited understanding of how non-sporting students, particularly nutrition students, manage their fitness. This study fills the gap by exploring the relationship between physical activity, dietary habits, and fitness in this group. Research Objective: This study aims to examine the fitness profile of female undergraduate nutrition students and explore the factors associated with fitness such as physical activity level (PAL), nutritional status, and diet. Methods: To answer the research objective, a cross-sectional design was conducted, involving 114 healthy female students, aged 18-20 years old. Respondents were selected by using proportional random sampling, which enabled equal representation of each class in the study. Exclusion criteria: students have chronic disease or condition affecting physical fitness. Physical fitness was assessed using the Harvard Step Test, PAL was measured via an online self-administered IPAQ, nutritional status was assessed using a body mass index (BMI) calculation, and dietary data (energy and iron intakes) was assessed using 2x24 non-consecutive food records. Chi-squares or Fisher Exact tests were done to analyse the association between physical fitness and other variables. Finding and Result: We found that almost all of our respondents were at poor levels of physical fitness. There was no significant association between physical fitness and other variables such as PAL, BMI, and diet. Conclusion: This research supported previous findings that college students in health majors have poor fitness. Future studies should explore additional factors such as physiological stress, sleep pattern, or socio-economic status that may impact the fitness level of health-major students.
Paralympic athletes’ perspective of doping self-regulatory efficacy in Nigeria

Abstract

Background Problems: With the high demands of sports and the crave for success despite diminishing strength with ageing in the presence of disability, athletes are tempted to contravene the ADRV. Research Objectives: The study aimed to study paralympic athletes’ perspective of doping self-regulatory efficacy in Nigeria. Methods: Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. A 13-item validated questionnaire (α= .74) was employed to collect data for the study. One-hundred and twenty-four male (81) and female (43) elite para-athletes (mean= 23.15 years, ±3.65) voluntarily participated in the study. ANOVA, PPMC, and Cramer’s V Chi-Square Coefficient Contingency were used to determine the relationship and difference across age, gender and sport type and the extent of the para-athletes’ likelihood to dope and confidence to avoid banned substances, respectively. Findings and Results: It indicated a significant effect of age on likelihood to dope at the p < 0.05 for all conditions (F (1, 123) = 45.84, p = 0.000). Therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected. Findings indicated no significance across gender (0.091, p > 0.05), sport (0.280, p > 0.05), and age (0.263, p > 0.05) on the likelihood to dope. Although, significant among older (0.022), female (0.024) para-athletes. Cramer’s V indicated a strong association when drugs would give immediate fitness (ɸ = 0.217), (ɸ = 0.243), and (ɸ = 0.263) across age, gender, and sport type respectively. Conclusion:  It is concluded among others that the para-athletes showed high self-efficacy and low likelihood to dope even in the presence of stressors. However, the ever-pressing need for the athlete’s body longing need for nutrition, oxygen, rest and staying in shape and top form for competing increased the possibility to use a banned drugs for your injury recovery among some older athletes. Psychological interventions are suggested combat the likelihood to dope given the experience levels or psychological dispositions of athletes.
Physical attributes and performance differences: Server vs. spiker players in men’s doubles sepak takraw

Abstract

Background Problems: Scientific research exploring the comparative analysis of the physical, physiological, and anthropometric characteristics associated with the server and spiker positions in double-category sepak takraw remains relatively scarce. Research Objectives: This study aims to compare the physical, physiological, and anthropometric characteristics between players in the server and spiker positions in the double category of sepak takraw. Methods: The research method used is an observational study with a quantitative approach. This study consisted of 18 male sepak takraw athletes, with 9 athletes each playing as servers and 9 athletes playing as spikers. The statistical analyses were conducted utilizing the SPSS Version 22 application. Findings and Results: The results of this study showed that there were statistically significant differences in body height, aerobic capacity, and leg strength between server and speaker positions (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, there were no significant differences in the variables age, weight, BMI, fat percentage, speed, agility, and flexibility. Dynamic, attractive game requirements and manoeuvres in the air for players in the spiker position have the potential to contribute to superior VO2max values and increased leg muscle strength compared to players in the server position. Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that athletes in the spiker position show superior anthropometric and physiological attributes compared to those in the server position. Different understandings of the different characteristics associated with each position in the sport of sepak takraw provide new insights and views for coaches and athletes themselves. In addition, it is hoped that this research will have implications for optimizing training programs that adapt to the demands of each position. Furthermore, these findings serve as a reference for talent search events that assist in the identification and development of athletes with optimal physiological profiles for their respective roles in double-category sepak takraw.
Aerobic training as an approach to increasing VO2max in amateur football athletes

Abstract

Background Problems: Lack of variety in aerobic exercise can cause boredom and reduce motivation to increase VO2max. Research Objectives: This study aims to assess how much influence aerobic exercise has on increasing VO2max in amateur football athletes. This involves regularly monitoring and measuring changes in VO2max levels over time. Methods: This research used a pre-experimental method; the design used was a one-group pretest and posttest design. The study used total sampling to select a population and sample of 30 amateur athletes. The instrument used was the 15-minute balke test to determine the athlete's VO2max capacity. The method used aerobic training with a 400-metre run. The data analysis technique used descriptive statistical tests, and prerequisite tests were normality, homogeneity, and hypothesis testing using the t-test with the SPSS version 26 program. Findings and Results: The analysis of the data reveals a notable improvement in VO2max following aerobic exercise. The average VO2max value increased from 55.38 during the pretest to 70.70 in the posttest phase. This increase was substantiated by the t-test results, where the calculated t-value was 10.36. Consequently, this indicates a significant enhancement in VO2max post-exercise. Conclusion: Aerobic exercise has a crucial role in increasing VO2max in amateur football athletes. Good cardiorespiratory conditioning can help improve their endurance, performance, and recovery during training and competition.
Circuit resistance training strategy on maximal strength, rate of force development and power: A random model meta-analysis

Abstract

Backround Problems: Circuit resistance training is a type of strength and power training mode according to short-term strength, rate of force development, and power strategy; however, priority maximises performance outcomes and is not used on trained and untrained resistance populations. Research Objectives: Increased performance on developing high-intensity resistance sessions and short time intervals was investigated with systematic review and meta-analysis methodology. This meta-analysis methodologic approach aimed to report popular circuit resistance training on maximal strength, rate of force development, and power able to short-time interval set-up micro-periodization. Methods: By following this way, a high-intensity resistance combination short-time interval strategy was provided between 2008 and 2023. A study using keywords of circuit resistance training, dynamic strength, explosive power, and rate of force development was conducted to explore SportDiscus, PubMed, and the and the Web of Science databases investigated in a random model meta-analysis. Findings and Results: Exploration of circuit resistance training contributed to clarifying maximise strength and power performance under probable report outcomes detected to analysis of metadologic quality risk of bias, effect size, and mean difference. Conclusion: In conclusion, circuit resistance training strategy resulted in maximising strength and power regimes, but sufficient research has not yet been carried out as a proper periodic session adapted to detect rate of force development and power combination in the literature. In addition, circuit resistance training strategic approach may be re-performed to plan strength and power.
Direct and indirect assistance and motivation: How do they affect learning handstand skills?

Abstract

Background Problems: The level of skills at this time is optimally needed, especially for students because it can be a selling point for them, but the skills of these students are still very underestimated because there has been no innovation to find out the skill level of current students. Research Objectives: The purpose of this research is to determine the effect of direct and indirect assistance and learning motivation on handstand skills. Methods: This research model is a quasi-experiment with a factorial design with 2 x 2 levels. The population of this study was 106 people, and the sample size was 40 people using the ordinally mathematical pairing technique. Collecting data on learning motivation using a questionnaire and handstand skills using a handstand skills test. Data were analysed using a two-way ANOVA at a significance level of α = 0.05 and the Shapiro-Wilk Sig normality test > 0.05. Furthermore, because no interaction was found between assistance with motivation and handstand skills, the Tukey test was not carried out. Findings and Results: The results of the data analysis show: (i) Overall, there is no difference in the influence of assisted handstand skills; (ii) There is no interaction between assistance and learning motivation on handstand skills; and (iii) Directly assisted handstand skills are no better than indirect assistance in learning. high learning motivation group, (iv) Indirect assistance handstand skills were better compared to direct assistance in the low learning motivation group. Conclusion: These findings are important because they provide information about handstand skills in the form of assistance that may be useful for teachers and students in improving handstand skills. This research shows that there is no significant difference between direct and indirect assistance in improving handstand skills. The recommendation for future research is to expand the sample and consider individual factors among students.
Endurance training for judo athletes: Improving anaerobic and aerobic capacity in the high altitude

Abstract

Background Problems: Judo is a sport that requires aerobic and anaerobic abilities. This is because the scoring in judo matches is different from other martial arts, where athletes will look for absolute 'ippon' points in one match. Therefore, training is needed that can support increasing aerobic and anaerobic capacity in judo athletes. Endurance training at high altitudes is a training method that is believed to have benefits for athletes' aerobic and aerobic capacity. Research Objectives: The study aims to examine the effect of endurance training on increasing the anaerobic and aerobic capacity of judo athletes based on the Special Judo Fitness Test (SJFT), which is a specific test for the sport of judo that can describe anaerobic and aerobic fitness according to the needs of judo. Methods: This research was conducted in the Puncak area of West Java, which is included in the highlands. An experimental method was used in this research on twenty-four Indonesian elite judo athletes who are carrying out training camps to face the SEA Games in Vietnam in 2021. The t test using SPSS Version 24 was used for data analysis in this study. Findings and Results: The results showed that there was a significant increase in anaerobic and aerobic capacity at high altitudes in judo athletes, as seen from the SJFT. Conclusion: This study concluded that endurance training could increase the anaerobic and aerobic capacity of judo athletes in the highlands. Endurance training at high altitudes for judo athletes is highly recommended because it has been proven to have a significant effect on increasing anaerobic and aerobic capacity. We recommend that judo coaches carry out training at high altitudes because it has been proven to improve the aerobic and anaerobic abilities of judo athletes.
