Impact of motor education levels and circuit training on enhancing wrestling techniques among adolescent athletes

Abstract

Background Problems: Wrestling is a compulsory course that can improve physical strength, discipline, and strategic skills and student learning outcomes. However, the learning outcomes are still not optimal due to inconsistent training, limited technique understanding, and a lack of independent training opportunities. Research Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of motor education level and circuit training on proficiency in learning wrestling martial arts techniques. Methods: This study used an experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group where there are two groups, the high motor ability group and the low motor ability group. The population consists of 40 students, and a sample of 20 students was selected using purposive sampling techniques based on certain criteria. Motor ability in this study is defined as an individual's ability to learn and develop motor skills, which is used to measure how quickly and efficiently a person can learn new motor movements. Data collection was done by measuring the level of motor ability and evaluating the techniques of wrestling after a period of practice. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 23 statistical software to evaluate the learning outcomes of the basic techniques of wrestling. Findings/Results: The results of the data analysis showed that overall, there were no significant differences between the two groups. However, when looking closely at the level of motor skills, there are differences in the post-test scores between students with high and low motor skills. Conclusion: The conclusions of the study showed that although there were no significant differences between the two groups, the high motor skills group showed more consistent improvements. Future research could focus on the development of physical and mental skills such as endurance, strength, and discipline, which are important in improving wrestlers’ performance.
Injury risk potential and flexibility level: An analysis of amateur team sport athletes

Abstract

Background Problems: Sports injuries are a severe problem that can affect an athlete's career, including those active in team sports such as basketball, volleyball, and futsal. Research Objectives: This study aims to analyse the potential risk of injury and the level of flexibility of amateur athletes at Universitas Negeri Semarang. Methods: This research is a quantitative descriptive study using the sampling technique, namely purposive sampling, to obtain a total sample of 90 athletes. Instruments to measure the potential risk of injury use the functional movement screen (FMS) and the level of flexibility using the sit-and-reach test. The data analysis techniques use descriptive statistical analysis. Findings and Results: The results of the FMS analysis showed that most male and female amateur athletes had a low level of injury risk. Flexibility measurements show that most male and female amateur athletes have good flexibility. This study contributes to understanding the potential risk of injury and the level of flexibility in amateur team sport athletes. Conclusion: The findings can assist coaches and teams in designing more effective training programmes to improve athletes' physical health and performance. Further research is recommended to analyse other physical condition component variables, as well as research subjects from different age groups. In addition, it is also recommended that more research samples from various levels of athletes be examined.
Integrating intellectual, emotional, and spiritual intelligence to enhance academic achievement in pencak silat

Abstract

Background Problems: Intellectual, emotional, and spiritual intelligences are believed to influence student learning achievement. However, the specific impact of these intelligences on physical education and, more specifically, on pencak silat learning outcomes remains unexplored. Research Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of intellectual, emotional, and spiritual intelligence on students' learning achievement in pencak silat. Methods: This research method uses descriptive quantitative causality. We sampled 96 students from a high school in Bekasi City. This study used four instruments: (i) Sternberg triarchic abilities test, (ii) global emotional intelligence test, (iii) spiritual intelligence test, and (iv) pencak silat learning achievement using Bloom's taxonomy. We analysed the data using descriptive statistics, specifically the F-test and T-test. Findings and Results: The study revealed that intellectual, spiritual, and emotional intelligence all play a significant role in enhancing students' learning achievement in pencak silat within physical education settings. Among these, emotional intelligence emerged as the most influential factor, surpassing both intellectual and spiritual intelligence in its impact on academic success. This finding underscores the critical role of emotional regulation and awareness in mastering complex physical and mental skills in pencak silat. Conclusions: The findings highlight the importance of strengthening all aspects of intelligence in education. This research brings a fresh perspective to the field of physical education, highlighting the increasing prominence of emotional intelligence in learning outcomes. It demonstrates the need for the development of emotional intelligence in the context of physical education, particularly in relation to pencak silat. For a more comprehensive understanding, we can conduct further research to investigate the interaction of these intelligences with other variables such as motivation, learning environment, and teaching methods.
Student responsibility after using SE in gymnastics as support for the MBKM curriculum

Abstract

Background Problems: Responsibility is an important part for students to study at university. In the learning process, students arrive late to take part in learning and do not complete assignments or even do not do them. By using Sport Education (SE) students are given assignments in a role to be responsible for the success of learning. SE has a strong connection to the Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) curriculum with students as the center of learning. Research Objectives: The aim of this research is to find out the responsibilities of each subscale according to the student's role after using SE and to test the effect of using SE on student responsibilities. Methods: The research method uses experimentation with a one-shot case study design. The participants involved in this research were 53 students at one of the universities in the sports studies program in Indramayu who were taken using convenience sampling techniques. The research instrument used the Contextual Self-Responsibility Questionnaire for sports program students. The data analysis technique uses statistical descriptions to determine the mean and standard deviation and tests hypotheses using the one-sample t test. Finding/Results: This research provides new findings regarding student responsibilities using SE at university level, especially in Indonesia as a support for the MBKM curriculum. Conclusion: This research concludes that there is an influence after using SE on student responsibility. Further investigation is needed regarding the administration of pretests, the existence of comparison classes, and the development of instruments to facilitate all roles according to the characteristics of roles in SE.
Evaluation of 24-hour nutrition intake in indoor hockey student-athletes

Abstract

Background Problems: Nutrition is an important factor in improving athlete performance, but many athletes still experience problems such as ignorance about the right portion and type of food, unbalanced energy intake, and a lack of knowledge about the nutrients the body needs. Research Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the nutritional intake of hockey student-athletes who are members of indoor hockey clubs in Tangerang City. Methods: This study used a quantitative descriptive method with a survey approach. Data were collected using a single and 24-hour reported food recall, and as many as 24 research subjects were involved in this study, there are student-athletes in the club’s indoor hockey in Tangerang City. Data analysis used a statistical approach in the form of percentages. The nutritional analysis in this study focused more on the percentages of carbohydrate, protein, fat, and caloric intake eaten by athletes within a 24-hour period. Findings and Results: This study showed the average results of the nutrition intakes include 83% for protein, 53% for carbohydrates, 72% for fat, and 52% for calories. The results show that the knowledge of indoor hockey athletes was still lacking. Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that the nutritional intake of indoor hockey athletes in Tangerang City is still far from optimal. It is vital for athletes to enhance their understanding of proper nutrition and energy needs, as this can significantly impact their fitness levels and performance outcomes. Coaches and trainers should prioritise nutrition education as part of regular training programs, collaborating with nutritionists to ensure that athletes receive the necessary guidance on their dietary habits. In the future, developing integrated nutritional programs tailored to the specific needs of indoor hockey athletes will be crucial. This research contributes to a growing understanding of the importance of nutrition in sports and underscores the need for continued efforts to address the dietary challenges faced by student athletes.
Investigating popular topics for the integration of the internet of things in physical education: A content analysis in higher education

Abstract

Background Problems: Advanced technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), have played an increasingly important role in the development of physical education in higher education. Research Objectives: This study aims to conduct a content analysis of the use of IoT technology in physical education in higher education. Methods: Scopus and Web of Science databases were used to collect and analyse data for this study, with a total of 178 articles obtained, consisting of 104 articles (Scopus) and 74 articles (Web of Science). The final data used for this study consisted of 20 articles, as it only targeted the top five topics related to the internet of things (IoT) in physical education after being analysed using ScientoPy. Findings and Results: The analysis identified five main topics related to the application of the internet of things in physical education in higher education, including cloud, artificial intelligence, deep learning, big data, and virtual reality. The implications of these findings for the development of physical education in higher education are discussed in this study, emphasizing the importance of IoT technology integration in creating a more adaptive and responsive learning environment. Conclusion: The contributions of this research include providing deeper insights into how IoT technologies can be applied in physical education in higher education, as well as highlighting the potential to improve the effectiveness of learning and teaching in this area. The conclusions of this study emphasises the importance of continuing to develop innovations in the application of IoT technology in physical education in higher education in order to achieve a more efficient and competitive learning environment.
Prevalence and epidemiological characteristics of sports injuries: A comparative analysis of injured vs non-injured athletes

Abstract

Background Problems: Sports exercise offers numerous health benefits but is also linked to sports injuries. According to a large body of research, researchers have identified age, gender, injury history, and level of competition as consistent risk factors for injury. Research Objectives: This study aims to analyse the injury prevalence of athletes in some sports and compare the epidemiological characteristics related to injury risk factors between athletes who experienced injuries and those who did not. Methods: This study employed a quantitative approach with a retrospective cross-sectional design. An online questionnaire collected data from a sample of  172 athletes and sports activists in football, cycling, and running. We conducted descriptive and comparative analyses using the SPSS 29 version. Findings and Results: 135 of the 172 respondents experience injuries, with the highest prevalence in football (42.2%), running (36.3%), and cycling (21.5%). Most athletes had recurrent injuries (36.3%). The Mann-Whitney test results showed no significant differences in mean age, weekly training frequency, and training duration between athletes who had injuries and those who did not. Conclusion: This study provides important insights into the prevalence and characteristics of injuries among athletes. The results of this study, which compare injured and non-injured athletes, can help develop better injury prevention and management strategies. We recommend increased awareness of injury conditions among athletes, coaches, and medical professionals to ensure a safe return to sport.
Mapping the landscape of small-sided games in team sports: A bibliometric analysis and literature review

Abstract

Background Problems: Small-sided games (SSGs) have become a significant focus of research in the context of team sports, and a thorough review and analysis of the existing research landscape is needed to identify trends, gaps, and emerging themes. Research Objectives: This study aims to map the research landscape on small-sided games (SSGs) in the context of team sports through a bibliometric approach and a literature review. Methods: Literature was drawn from established research sources in the Scopus and Web of Science databases from 2014 to 2023. The final data used for this study consisted of 1012 articles, which were then analysed using a bibliometric approach, and the literature review was limited to 237 articles after grouping ten types of team sports using the ScientoPy tool. Findings and Results: The results showed a consistent increase in interest in SSGs, with journals such as “Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research” and “Biology of Sport” playing an important role in expanding understanding of the topic. The analysis also revealed that authors such as Clemente F.M. and Praca G.M. had a significant impact on developing knowledge about SSGs. Although football dominated the related literature, the results also highlighted other sports such as basketball, futsal, and handball. However, there is still a lack of SSG research for sports such as cricket and dodgeball. The benefits of SSGs in team sports include improved technical skills, physical fitness, tactical understanding, and physical performance. Conclusion: This study provides insight into the important role of SSGs in athlete development and team sports training and highlights the need for further research to optimise the full potential of this training method.
Enhancing histology learning in sports science education through a functional approach and virtual microscopy practical sessions

Abstract

Background Problems: Histology is a critical component of the sports science curriculum, as it thoroughly explains the connection between the structure and function of cells, tissues, and organs. Research Objective: This study investigates the improvement of histology learning among sports science students by employing a functional approach and practical sessions with virtual microscopy. Methods: The study adopted a quasi-experimental design with 103 students from the Sports Science program, enrolled in a histology course with two parallel classes. The students were divided into experimental (n = 56) and control groups (n = 46) using cluster random sampling based on their classes. The experimental group received instruction using virtual microscopy, while the control group was taught using light microscopy throughout the semester. Both groups were assessed on their learning outcomes at the end of the semester through a written exam. Experimental group students also provided feedback on the courses. Using the independent t-test, the learning outcomes were compared between groups. Students’ feedback was analysed descriptively. Findings and Results: The results revealed that the average test scores for participants in the experimental group were significantly higher than those in the control group (74.9 ± 7.8 and 68.9 ± 9.6, respectively). Student feedback indicated that the majority concurred that the functional approach to histology teaching enhanced their understanding of histological structures. They also noted that practical virtual microscopy sessions improved their comprehension of the topics studied. Additionally, nervous tissue was identified as the most challenging tissue to learn, primarily due to visualisation difficulties in relating microscopic and macroscopic structures and the abundance of new terminology to remember. Conclusion: The findings suggest that combining a functional approach with virtual microscopy notably enhances the quality of histology education, equipping sports science students with a comprehensive understanding and essential practical skills for their academic and professional development.
Holistic coaching style on personal attributes and proficiency of volleyball athletes

Abstract

Background Problems: The significance of holistic coaching has been widely recognized. Meanwhile, there has not been much research done on how holistic coaching affects athletes’ personal attribute proficiency for the reason to investigate in order to better prepare their own skills for the demanding needs of volleyball. Research Objectives: The research aims to explore the holistic coaching on the athletes’ personal attributes and proficiency. Specifically, the researchers try to answer the status of implementing a holistic coaching style of volleyball athletes, in particular to clear communication, decision-making, goal-orientated, and result-driven. In addition, to determine the level of athletes personal attributes proficiency concerning skill development, teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship. Methods: This study used a descriptive research approach, and the respondents consist of volleyball athletes, which were chosen purposefully. Additionally, the validated survey questionnaire was utilised as a primary data gathering tool. Findings and Results: The results reiterated that the status of implementing holistic coaching styles of volleyball athletes and personal attributes were highly observed and acceptable among the respondents. Likewise, the correlation of the different holistic coaching styles with each athlete’s personal attribute using Pearson’s correlation coefficient (r) has a significant correlation with the moderate to strong positive degree. Conclusion: These results highlight the significance of adjusting coaching strategies to the unique characteristics of each athlete while placing a strong emphasis on methods that are result-driven, goal-orientated, involve clear communication, and involve sound decision-making. Therefore, in order to maximise player growth and team performance, coaches should place a high priority on improving these coaching styles.
