Abstract

Background: Physical education (PE) plays a critical role in supporting children’s physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development. However, PE instruction in elementary schools often remains teacher-centred and provides limited opportunities for active participation. Although previous studies have demonstrated the positive effects of gamification on learning motivation and play-based movement activities on motor development, limited research has integrated these approaches within a structured pedagogical model that simultaneously addresses affective and psychomotor learning outcomes. Objectives: This study aimed to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of the mini-PlayLab Learning Model, a structured instructional model integrating gamification and play-based movement learning, to improve elementary school students’ learning motivation and fundamental movement skills. Methods: A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design was employed involving 60 fifth-grade students, with 30 students assigned to the experimental group and 30 students to the control group. Data were collected using a Learning Motivation Questionnaire and a Fundamental Movement Skills Assessment. The intervention was implemented over eight weeks. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), and effect size analysis. Results: After controlling for baseline differences using ANCOVA, the experimental group achieved significantly higher adjusted posttest scores than the control group for both learning motivation and fundamental movement skills (both p < 0.001). Large intervention effects were observed for learning motivation (partial η² = 0.25) and fundamental movement skills (partial η² = 0.29), indicating meaningful improvements in students’ affective and psychomotor learning outcomes following implementation of the mini-PlayLab learning model. Conclusion: The mini-PlayLab Learning Model is an effective instructional model for enhancing elementary school students’ learning motivation and fundamental movement skills. The findings contribute to Physical education pedagogy by providing empirical evidence for a structured instructional model that systematically integrates gamification and play-based movement learning to simultaneously support affective and psychomotor development.

Abstract

Background: Plyometric training is widely used to improve explosive athletic performance, including sprint and jumping performance. However, evidence from collegiate track and field athletes remains limited, particularly for short-duration training programmes. Objectives: This study examined changes in 30-m sprint performance and vertical jump performance following a six-week plyometric training programme among collegiate track and field athletes. Methods: A one-group pretest–posttest design was used. Twenty collegiate track and field athletes from Universitas Bina Bangsa, Indonesia, participated in a six-week plyometric training programme consisting of three supervised sessions per week. Sprint performance was assessed using a 30-m sprint test, while vertical jump performance was used as an indicator of lower-limb explosive performance. Results: Mean 30-m sprint time decreased from 4.82 ± 0.31 s at pretest to 4.54 ± 0.28 s at posttest, representing a 0.28-s reduction (5.8%), with a statistically significant difference, t(19) = −5.62, p < .001, and a large within-participant effect size (Cohen’s dz = 1.27). Mean vertical jump height increased from 45.30 ± 4.12 cm to 49.85 ± 4.37 cm, representing a 4.55 cm increase (10.0%), also statistically significant, t(19) = 6.18, p < 0.001, with a large effect size (Cohen’s dz = 1.38).  Conclusion: Six weeks of supervised plyometric training were associated with improvements in 30-m sprint and vertical jump performance among collegiate track and field athletes. However, because the study did not include a control group or random allocation, the observed improvements cannot be attributed exclusively to the plyometric intervention.

Abstract

Background: Successful execution of the Dwi Chagi kick requires rapid reaction time and precise kick placement. Although various training interventions have been developed to improve kicking performance, objective assessment during routine training remains limited because evaluations are still largely based on conventional coach observation. Objectives: This study aims to develop and evaluate an electronic reaction training device for objectively assessing reaction time and Dwi Chagi kick accuracy in junior taekwondo athletes. Methods:  This study employed a modified three-stage Research and Development model consisting of the Define, Design, and Develop phases. The device was designed, prototyped, and evaluated through expert validation involving three nationally certified taekwondo coaches and three sports instrumentation experts. Content validity was assessed using Aiken’s V coefficient, whereas operational performance was evaluated through field testing involving 16 junior taekwondo athletes. Measurement reliability was examined using inter-rater and test–retest Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICC). Results: The developed device demonstrated excellent content validity (Aiken’s V = 0.889) and good-to-excellent measurement reliability (ICC = 0.86-0.91). Field evaluation demonstrated that the system successfully generated randomised visual stimuli, objectively recorded reaction time, and automatically assessed Dwi Chagi kick accuracy, achieving successful detection rates of 82.0% for left-leg kicks and 88.0% for right-leg kicks. Conclusion: The proposed electronic reaction training device demonstrated satisfactory content validity, operational feasibility, and measurement reliability, indicating its potential as a practical tool for objective reaction-time and kick-accuracy assessment during taekwondo training. However, further criterion validation against established reference systems is required before widespread implementation.

Abstract

Background: Although physical activity is generally associated with better health and well-being, limited evidence has examined the relative associations of body mass index (BMI) and physical activity with quality of life among sport science students. Objectives: This study examined the relationships between BMI, physical activity, and quality of life and assessed sex differences among sport science students. Methods: A cross-sectional study involved 93 sport science students aged 18–25 years. BMI was measured directly, physical activity was assessed using the GPAQ, and quality of life was measured using the WHOQOL-BREF. Associations were examined using multiple linear regression after testing regression assumptions. Results: Most participants had normal BMI (68.89%) and high physical activity levels (47.31%). The mean quality of life score was 97.41 ± 11.87. Quality of life differed significantly across physical activity levels (p = 0.024), but not across BMI categories (p = 0.914) or by sex (p = 0.473). Physical activity was positively associated with quality of life (β = 0.278, p = 0.007), whereas BMI was not (β = −0.045, p = 0.657). The regression model explained 8.1% of the variance in quality of life (R² = 0.081, p = 0.022). Conclusion: Physical activity showed a stronger association with quality of life than BMI among sport science students, highlighting the importance of maintaining adequate physical activity to support student well-being.

Abstract

Background: Although previous bibliometric studies have examined specific aspects of youth soccer, such as injury prevention, performance analysis, or talent identification, no study has comprehensively mapped the intellectual evolution of the field over the past two decades. Objectives: This study aimed to provide a comprehensive bibliometric mapping of youth soccer research published between 2005 and 2025 and to identify emerging themes and future research priorities. Methods: Bibliographic data were retrieved from the Scopus database using a predefined Boolean search strategy. Eligible studies were limited to English-language journal articles reporting primary research with a primary focus on youth soccer. Following data cleaning and duplicate removal, bibliometric performance analysis was conducted using Biblioshiny (version 4.5.3), while science mapping and network visualisation were performed using VOSviewer (version 1.6.20). Results: A total of 1,737 articles met the inclusion criteria, showing substantial publication growth after 2018. Clemente FM was identified as the most productive author, while the Journal of Sports Sciences emerged as the leading publication source. Keyword co-occurrence analysis identified eight thematic clusters, including talent identification, injury prevention, coaching, physiology, talent development, biomechanics, recovery and mental health, and technology-based monitoring. Character-building research was underrepresented, whereas technology-assisted coaching appeared as an emerging but relatively underdeveloped theme. Conclusion: This bibliometric analysis provides a comprehensive overview of the evolution of youth soccer research over two decades by identifying publication trends, collaboration networks, influential contributors, and key research themes. The findings reveal emerging research opportunities, offering valuable directions for future research and evidence-based practice in youth soccer.
