Abstract

The representation of bipolar disorder in popular culture can become a reflection of society’s views toward the individuals with bipolar disorders. In this regard, the idea of a character with a bipolar disorder does not only emerge based on the situations in real life but also how people view them. Thus, the idea of an individual with bipolar disorder as a strange, dangerous, unstable, and irrational character might become a stereotype that emerges from the representation of mental disorder characters in popular media. This research aims to analyze identity articulation of mental disorder characters in films such as titled Silver Linings Playbook (2012), Touched with Fire (2015) and The Other Half (2016) and the discourse surrounding it using theories of representation and identity articulation. Using a qualitative research design, this research explores narrative elements, visuals, and social interactions of characters to understand how mental illness characters are constructed. The findings suggest that characters' identities are articulated through their struggles with stereotypes, interpersonal support, and a negotiation between individuality and social pressures. The result shows that although the three films successfully provide a more humane view of mental illness, they are still articulated with mental illness identities in mental illness discourse, reinforcing certain stereotypes.

Abstract

This research analyzed ten caricatures about the Indonesian 2024 presidential election posted by the Instagram account @komikkitaig from October 2023 to February 2024. This paper uses a qualitative research design to find the meanings of caricatures using Barthes' semiotic analysis which categorizes meanings into denotation, connotation and myth. The aim of this research is to describe how caricatures are used to criticize the themes around the presidential election. The results of this research show that the denotation meanings can be found in the writing and drawings of the 2024 Indonesian presidential candidates. The connotation meanings in the caricature of presidential candidates Anies-Muhaimin suggest conflict, agreement and formal while the caricatures of the presidential candidates Prabowo-Gibran suggest relaxed, sarcastic and talkative. Meanwhile, the meanings of the caricature of presidential candidates Ganjar-Mahfud suggest solidarity, harmony and professionalism. The myths in the 2024 presidential election caricatures reflect the existence of political dynasties, elections influenced by certain political powers, identity politics, money determining victory, and political solidarity.

Abstract

Sharenting or a phenomenon in which parents share their kids’ daily life has become a current trend in social media websites such as YouTube. This trend has  also become famous in Indonesia since two Indonesian public figures, Raffi Ahmad and Nagita Slavina regularly share their sharenting contents on their Rans Entertainment YouTube channel. The researcher aimed to examine one of the sharenting contents of Rans Entertainment sharenting titled "Banjir Undangan TV!! Raffi Nagita Dukung Bakat Cipung di Dunia Entertainment, Cipung Anteng Aja.." through theoretical perspectives of Hall’s representation theory and Pierce’s semiotics approach. We used a descriptive qualitative research design. We used observation and documentation as the research instruments. We observed the scenes from the content and found 12 scenes as the research subjects. The results showed that Cipung's interactions with adults and peers shaped her identity, and created a complex dynamic between privacy, identity and public exposure. The findings highlight the impact of sharenting on children's privacy and the importance of parental awareness in sharing moments of children's lives on social media.

Abstract

A father has several important roles for the upbringing of his children such as being a role model, teaching his children to be aware of unwritten rules in society, and providing the foundation of communication skills to his children. Unfortunately, some families are not equipped with fathers who have active roles in raising their children or fatherless. This study aimed to analyze the impact of growing up with fathers to a group of men. This study applied a qualitative research design by interviewing four participants. The age range of the participants is from 20-25 years old. These participants have grown without fathers since they were children either because of parental separation or deaths. The findings of this study suggest that fathers have significant roles as the earliest role models for children that help them to adapt to their social environment. The results also indicate some difficulties such as the lack of self-confidence, the struggles to build relationships with people around them, the strains to express emotions, the awkwardness to start conversations with other people and poor communication with both family and peers. The implications of the findings of this study indicate the importance of treating people kindly despite the family status and learning the strategies to communicate thoughts and express emotions better.
