Abstract

Community based early warning system is one of the efforts in reducing flood risk by increasing community awareness in managing disasters. The system comprises the reduction of risk level and vulnerability, along with the strengthening of community capacity among others related to local wisdom. Practicing local wisdom in flood management ensures the effectiveness of the early warning system to be implemented. The article identifies the local wisdom found in local communities in seven sub-districts of Semarang City’s Bringin Drainage Sub-system to understand the community’s capacity in developing the flood early warning system. The observation on the methods carried out in flood prediction, information dissemination and emergency evacuation processes showed that the local communities have indeed implemented a conventional early warning system, however the system is not accompanied by clear procedures, rendering current efforts in risk reduction ineffective.

Abstract

Street vendors (PKL) are one of the informal sectors that are often viewed as a parasite sector and have a negative impact on the city's image. However, the existence of street vendors also become one of the highest city's economic support and provide benefits for the community. Thus, the informal sector including street vendors need to be considered in the provision of space in urban areas. Street vendors in the educational area of Tembalang increasingly mushrooming after the transfer of Undip Pleburan students to Tembalang. The street vendors use public spaces and interfere with other space users, especially pedestrians and road users. This research uses positivistic-rationalism approach with quantitative research method to determine the direction of city space provision for street vendors in Tembalang educational area. The result of this research is the provision of city space for street vendors in Tembalang Educational Area directed by arranging PKL activity on strategic and accessible road corridor. Abstract

Nusa Tenggara Timur Province has a diverse ethnicity with various language, tradition, and cultural background. Spread across the province, each ethnic group are divided into sub tribes/family groups known as clans. Larantuka, the capitol of East Flores is a part of the Lamaholot tribe. In this city exists groups of settlements based on ethnicity consisting of the Lewo Waibalun, Lewo Lere, Lewo Balela, Lewo Larantuka and Lewo Lebao. These traditional communities includes the low, middle and high class, and are constructed by association of tribe, religion and race. Larantuka, which used to be a kingdom, had a distinguishable pattern as a Lamaholot traditional settlement, which had been occupied by the Kakang Nuba faction (King’s advisors). As time changes the way of living of the people, several changes are apparent in the pattern of settlements and their infrastructures which forms the Lamaholot community structure in Larantuka. There is a concern that this change will, sooner or later, affect the settlement environment quality, and even eliminate the identity as a Lamaholot traditional settlement and the city’s historical potential.

Abstract

Agricultural sustainable development is an integrated effort to support agricultural activities by involving stakeholders with different backgrounds and motives; such as social, cultural, economic, and environmental. Participatory Farming Model Development (Pengembangan Model Usahatani Partisipatif ‐ PMUP) conducted by the government in Desa Tlahab intended to improve the farmer welfare by increasing income without sacrificing the heritage of tobacco farming culture while reducing the environmental damage caused by tobacco cultivation. This kind of agricultural activities need immense participation and willingness of the farmers as a supporting response for the implementation of this system on their land. Farmers stated that living conditions have kept them from supporting the implementation of PMUP. This condition includes farmer socio‐economic situation, environmental conditions in carrying out the activities, the low performance of farmer groups, lack of competitiveness of the PMUP compared to previous agricultural system, also lack of performance from the institutional boards.
