Journal of English Language and Literature (JELL) is a journal published by STIBA-IEC Jakarta. This journal is published two times a year (March and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and Literature. The journal provides research to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language or in Literature, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field. The Journal calls for unpublished original manuscripts to be considered for publication. The papers submitted to the Journal should not have already been published elsewhere except circulated as conference presentations, nor should they be submitted simultaneously to another journal. JELL publishes the article twice a year, March and September.

Abstract

This paper discussed the translation error from a business letter made based on American Translation Association (ATA's) made by EFL Learners'. In this research, the researchers used a descriptive qualitative method. The data source in this research is two EFL Learners' who are in translation class with better English skills than other data. Data collection in this study was carried out by taking two data from a total of 36 business letter translating task data given by translation class lecturers. The data is classified based on the type of error according to ATA's Framework for Standard Error Making Classification. The results of the analysis show that there are 18 translation errors in 11 types of 26 types of translation errors with style error as the most frequently found error. Style error is the error that has the highest nominal by appearing five times out of 18 the number of errors with a percentage 27,8%. Finding errors from the two data proves that EFL Learners' who are studying translation studies still have deficiencies. Educators and students must work together so that translation errors produced by EFL Learners' can be reduced.

Abstract

This classroom action research aims to improve the ability to compose through serial image media in learning Indonesian for foreign speakers of Korean for the first time in an audiovisual course for 4th semester students. This research conducted on 30 semester 4 students, consisting of 15 male students and 15 female students. The learning used in this research is classroom action research with the Kemmis and McGartgart spiral model. Improved test scores compose of initial requirement of cycle I to cycle III is the average value at the beginning conditions was 59.67 with a completeness percentage of 43.33% (13 students), in cycle I it increased to 65.33 with a completeness percentage of 60% ( 18 students), in cycle II it increased to 72 with a completeness percentage of 73.33% (22 students) and in cycle III it increased to 75.66 with a completeness percentage of 86.66% (26 people). The results obtained from the class action research on 30 students, namely by increasing the average value of the initial conditions of 59.67 increased to 65.33 in cycle I, in cycle II increased to 72 and in cycle III increased to 75.66. It can be concluded that serial picture media in Indonesian language learning for foreign speakers of composing material can improve the writing ability of Malay-Indonesian study program students. Educators can use serial picture media as learning media which can improve students' composing abilities, so that students can easily develop ideas. or his mind in composing.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to study English learning using nature-based learning methods to increase students' motivation in learning. In the minds of some students there is still a paradigm that assumes that success in learning English is due to talent. This assumption encourages students to be lazy to learn English. They tend to be more desperate and give up when they encounter difficulties in learning. However, learning English can be done anywhere and anytime using any method. The goal is that students can be motivated to develop learning that is more interesting and has a positive impact. The learning environment makes students broader in thinking and expression. The benefits of environment-based media allow students to better understand natural phenomena that occur in everyday life. Utilization of the environment makes the learning process more meaningful with the outdoor model. Students can explore the natural environment and learn practical skills to understand and appreciate aspects of environmental life. Learning activities will be more interesting for students. In addition, the use of the environment encourages an increase in student learning activities using nature-based learning methods

Abstract

This research is aimed to analyze the kind of woman’s struggle and Stella’s struggle to get in love in the ‘Five Feet Apart Movie’. This movie provides some struggles that are useful, they are struggle to get joy life, struggle in daily lives, and struggle to make end meet after life. The writers intend to know what kind of woman ‘s struggles found in “Five Feet Apart” Movie and how Stella’s struggles to get in love in “Five Feet Apart” Movie. The writers use qualitative methods to answer the problem. The writers apply the theory from Marsam (2000) about things that usually are fought in life. Therefore, the main purpose of this research is to analyze kind of woman’s struggle in “Five Feet Apart”, to analyze how Stella’s struggles to get in love in “Five Feet Apart” Movie. By studying kinds of woman’s struggling in this movie and how Stella’s struggle, it is implicated that the readers are encouraged to pursuing the struggling to be human being with touch to connect sadness, happiness, proud and all heart feeling

Abstract

This study is an attempt to determine the effect of using audio-visual media on improving student learning abilities at MTs Ma’arif Miftahul Huda Lempuyang Anjatan Indramayu. This research is to answer the questions: (1) How is the students’ speaking ability in MTs Ma’arif Miftahul Huda Lempuyang Anjatan Indramayu? (2) How is the fluency of students’ speaking ability in MTs Ma’arif Miftahul Huda Lempuyang Anjatan Indramayu? (3) Hoe effective is audio-visual media to improve students’ speaking ability in MTs Ma’arif Miftahul Huda Lempuyang Anjatan Indramayu? This study used quantitative method.The data collection method used the pre-test method, the treatment method and the post-test method. The population in this study was 251 and a sample of 71 students were taken from grade 8. The results of this study showed the average score of students was 55,5 after being given treatment, there was a significant change in the improvement, the average score of students was 71. Improved learning outcome after using audio-visual media by 15,5 %. From this research, it can be concluded that there is effectiveness in using audio-visual media to improve students’ speaking ability

Abstract

This study aims to know the moral values and the types of moral values in Aquaman film. with moral approach. There are two research problems proposed from this “AQUAMAN” analyzing film. Based on the research problems, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative method in collecting the data. To analyze this film, the researcher applies moral value approach. There are two sources of data used to analyze the related issues, namely primary and secondary data sources. Primary data sources from the film Aquaman (2018) and other sources such as journals, websites, previous research, and other articles. In conclusion, the findings of this research shows there are many moral values found in the movie “AQUAMAN”, such as: love and affection, care, bravery, and sincerity. Then, Love, affection, care, bravery, and sincerity are very important parts of human life

Abstract

Movie has been developing since the 18th century, from just a moving picture until a very big production that includes many things such as camera, microphone, even a computer for adding the effects or additional sounds to the movie. Lady Bird (2017) is one of the greatest movies according to the writer, it has a unique aspect from the main character, Christine McPherson, a teenager who lives in Sacramento, U.S. Christine does not want people to call her by her name, but Lady Bird instead. The fact that Christine eventually gives up on making her life up and trying to live her life normally as she should, interests the writer to discuss Christine’s character development. The writer thinks about what Christine McPherson did in the movie is extraordinarily amazing. She changed from a girl that likes to make something up into a girl that accept everything that happens in her life.

Abstract

Analytically, this research engages literally works in analysing the figurative languages used in Bruno Mars’ song lyrics “Grenade” while the urgency of this research is the need for a thorough understanding of figurative language in the song’s lyrics. For this reason, the objectives of this research is to find out kinds, the most dominant usage and general meanings of figurative language in Bruno Mars’ selected song’s lyrics. As for the design of this research, the researchers used a qualitative method with descriptive approach. The previous researches which had already been undertaken by the other researchers are namely the analysis of figurative language in the song lyrics of nine songs belonging to Maroon 5, namely Shiver, Goodnight good night, The way I was, Moves like Jagger, Can't stop, Sweetest goodbye, Until you're over me, Ragdoll, and Woman. Meanwhile the other researcher conducted research regarding ”An Analysis of Figurative Language in Online Short Story Posted on The Jakarta Post” aimed to find some kinds of figurative languages used. Different from the abovementioned researches, this research focuses on finding the kinds, the most dominant usage and general meanings of figurative languages in Bruno Mars’ selected song’s lyrics “Grenade”. Accordingly, after analysing the lyrics of the chosen Bruno Mars’ song “Grenade”, there are seven different kinds of figurative languages identified namely hyperbole, alliteration, irony, idioms, repetition, symbol, and metaphor. And then, the most figurative language used in such Bruno Mars’ selected song lyrics “Grenade” is hyperbole. As for general meanings described in such song’s lyrics they constitute romantic relationships that include despair, happiness, loneliness, and other emotions.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to identify the types of translation shifts present in the Eragon movie and to determine their frequency. The data will be collected from the dialogues in the movie. As a basis for this research, there is translation shift theory used, namely the translation shift theory of Catford (1965. In analyzing the data, the author uses a qualitative research methodology with a case study research design. This research identified translation shift occurrence in 599 dialogues and selected 12 samples for detailed analysis and discussion. The findings of the analysis indicated the presence of both Level Shift and Category Shift in the dialogues. The Level Shift is based on grammatical structure, they are Present Perfect Tense, Past Perfect Tense, Past Continuous Tense and Future Tense. The second shift found is Category Shift which consists of four types, they are Structure Shift, Unit Shift, Class Shift and Intra-System Shift. Overall, the results of this research demonstrate the occurrence of both Level Shift and Category Shift in the Eragon movie.

Abstract

In translating text, translators have to be able to transfer one language into another language based on the culture, grammar and idiom in order to make the translation accurate. Hence, this research analyzed idiomatic expressions in the subtitles of Beauty and the Beast movie. It aimed to identify the types of strategies used by the translator and the meaning of idiomatic expressions found in the movie. The writer designed this research as descriptive qualitative research. In the process of analyzing the data, the researcher focuses on Baker’s idiomatic translation strategies applied by the translator to translate idiomatic expressions in the subtitles of Beauty and The Beast movie, which are similar meaning and form strategies, similar meaning but dissimilar form, translation by paraphrasing and by omission. The results of this research showed that there were 10 data of idiomatic expressions, which are 3 data used idiomatic translation by similar meaning and form, 2 data used idiomatic translation by similar meaning but dissimilar form, 3 data used idiomatic translation by paraphrase, and 2 data used idiomatic translation by omission.
