Journal of English Language and Literature (JELL) is a journal published by STIBA-IEC Jakarta. This journal is published two times a year (March and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and Literature. The journal provides research to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language or in Literature, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field. The Journal calls for unpublished original manuscripts to be considered for publication. The papers submitted to the Journal should not have already been published elsewhere except circulated as conference presentations, nor should they be submitted simultaneously to another journal. JELL publishes the article twice a year, March and September.

Abstract

This study is an attempt to determine the effect of vocabulary and grammar management on English description text writing skill at SMKN 1 Indramayu. This research is to answer the questions: 1) How are the students’ writing skills at SMKN 1 Indramayu? 2) How is the influence of students’ descriptive text writing skills at SMKN 1 Indramayu? 3) How effective is vocabulary to improve English description text writing skills at SMKN 1 Indramayu? 4)How effective is grammar management to improve English description text writing skills at SMKN 1 Indramayu? The method used is survey. The inference analysis used is descriptive correlational research and multiple linear regression. The population in this study was 266 and a sample 70 respondents were taken from grade XI. The results of this study are proven by the acquisition of Sig. = 0.000 <0.05 and F observe = 192,939. 2) There is a significant effect of vocabulary mastery on English descriptive text writing skills, this is proven by the acquisition of Sig. = 0.000 <0.05 and T observe = 10,831. 3) There is a significant effect of grammar mastery o English descriptive text writing skills, this is proven by the acquisition of Sig. 0.000 <0.05 and T observe = 6.984.

Abstract

This research departs from the problems that occur related to racial discrimination that occurred in America. This study aims to examine the social issue surrounding the superiority of racist violence. Finding out the types of racism exist and describing how it is portrayed in the Black Eyed Peas song “Where is The Love?” are the goals of this study. Content analysis is a type of qualitative research that was employed in this research by the researcher. Unit analysis was used to gather data from the song through words and lyrics. The themes in the data were categorized, coded, and classified. Following that, the data were interpreted using the writer's point of view. The result showed that “Where is The Love?” song contained racism in the form of prejudice, and physical violence occur in the song. The “Where is The Love?” song represents racism in America because it was based on the tragedy happened in the past where Black Americans have been treated bad by the superiority.

Abstract

Practically, this research engages literary works to critically examine the figurative language represented in recent Disney animated films’ soundtrack, “Encanto”, which was released in 2021. Meanwhile, the urgency of this research is the need of thorough understanding of figurative language in the song’s lyrics. In relation to which, the objectives of this research is to find the kinds, the most dominant usage and general meaning of figurative language used in the selected songs of the original soundtrack of Disney’s animated film “Encanto”. As for the works of this research, it is to unpack the constructions of the figurative language through an analysis of the figuration of the Disney movie’s soundtrack. In this matter, this research analyze the lyrics which are discursively embodied in these Disney movies in complex and contradictory ways, for such and therefore Disney works on and through these bodies are then accordingly undertaken to fix and contain the ideological constructions of language, literature, and culture. Since language gives people the spirit and symbolic of expressions, in order to gather the aforesaid objectives, the researchers use qualitative method with descriptive approach, by gathering information mainly from books and international journals. The researcher discovered nine different kinds of figurative languages namely metaphor, simile, metonymy, irony, personification, paradox, hyperbole, synecdoche, and idiom. Apparently the researcher identified that the most figurative language used in such Disney’s animated film “Encanto” is metaphor.

Abstract

The Objective of the research is to find out the types of moral values and to find out the most dominant type of moral value in the Children of Heaven movie by Majid Majidi. The writer use descriptive qualitative method to get the objective of the study. The researchers have collected the data from the script of “Children of Heaven” movie by Majid Majidi. In Conclusion of the researcher founding and result there some types of moral values. The categories found are 6 from Caring for other living thing and environment, 3 from Respect and caring for others, 2 from Commitment to something greater than oneself, and 1 from Self-respect, but with humbleness or respect to others, self-discipline, and acceptance of personal responsibility. Faith & Courage values don’t have any dialogue in this movie, but there is a scene for each both Faith and Courage which represent them. And the most dominant moral value occurred in the Children of Heaven movie by Majid Majidi is Caring for other living thing and environment with 6 data.

Abstract

The purposes of this research are: (1) To examine the character of Narcissistic Personality Disorder on Baroness (2) To show the impacts of Baroness’s Narcissistic Personality Disorder to people around her. This research found out the characterization of Narcissistic Personality Disorder on Baroness the villain on Cruella (2021) movie. In studying of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, the researchers use Qualitative research methodology and use psychological approach to examine the psychology aspect on Baroness. This research also uses two main books from American Psychiatry Association DSM – V to know the characterization of Narcissistic Personality Disorder and book The Everything : Guide to Narcissistic Personality Disorder by Goodman, Lechan Cynthia and Leff, Barbara to describe the impact of Baroness’s Narcissistic Personality Disorder to people around her. The researchers found the significant characterization which is the Grandiose of Self – Importance on Baroness’s Narcissistic Personality Disorder and the significant impacts are Narcissistic as Co – Worker and Narcissistic as Boss.

Abstract

This study aims to identify semiotic signs present on the packaging of Nata de Coco. Utilizing a qualitative approach, the research draws upon Saussure's signifier and signified theory as outlined by Chandler (2022). Through analysis, ten semiotic signs were identified on the packaging, including the overall design, company logo, Wonderful Indonesia logo, Superbrands logo, Top Brand logo, Halal MUI logo, Mr. Mutu logo, International Food Safe symbol, International Resin Identification (7 other) Code symbol, and Do Not Litter icon. These findings shed light on the symbolic elements utilized in packaging design and their significance in communicating messages to consumers.

Abstract

The study was written to fulfil the writer’s final examination with the subject is The Role of Yoon Yeon Woo in Supporting The Story of The Drama My Perfect Stranger Directed By Kang Soo Yeon. The objectives of this study are: first, to identify Yoon Yeon Woo’s character in the drama My Perfect Stranger. Second, to find out Yoon Yeon Woo’s conflict in the drama My Perfect Stranger, and the third is to identify Yoon Yeon Woo’s role in supporting the story in the drama My Perfect Stranger. In this study, the writer of this study uses the qualitative research,because it focuses on understanding social phenomena from the perspective of the human participants in natural setting.The discussion focused on internal or a character in the drama. My Perfect Stranger is a mystery fantasy drama that tells about 2 main character in the drama went to time travel to year 1987 for uncover the serial murderer happen in Woojung-ri village and fix their future life. Hopefully this research will be useful, and in the future this research can become a source of data for future researchers who will conduct research on the same or related themes.

Abstract

Several speaking problems at SMKN 1 Kersana, Brebes Regency attracted researchers to conduct this research as an effort to help students in language learning. Researchers tried to see the effectiveness of playing the Pictionary Game on English speaking skills. This Pictionary game is a simple game and is applicable to all levels of students. The main function of this game is to develop creative thinking, improve grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, develop students' courage in expressing ideas and create responsibility and cooperation towards their students. Because of these advantages, many researchers have used this game on language learning such as the effect of Pictionary Game on vocabulary mastery and researchers decided to see whether Pictionary Game is effective for students' speaking skills. This research was conducted using an experimental design. In collecting data, the researcher took the pre-test and post-test from class XI Accounting A and examined them to see whether the Pictionary game was effective or not. The results of the research found that the results of the initial test or pretest with an average score of 8.30, this shows that class XI accounting A students do not fully have much knowledge regarding vocabulary in English. From the results of the t test using the Paired sample test method, it can be seen that (2-tailed) with a significance value of 0.000, H_0 is rejected, and from a significance level of 0.000 < 0.05 it can also be concluded that H_1 is accepted. Because H_0 is rejected and H_1 is accepted, it can be concluded that there is an increase in the vocabulary understanding of class This can be seen from the difference in the average value, namely 12.39 or 34.4%. This means that the learning method using the pictonary game technique has proven to be effective in increasing the vocabulary understanding of class XI students at SMK Negeri 1 Kersana.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine how teachers implement classroom management in private tutoring classes for elementary school students and determine if these classes contribute to students' English skills. The research was conducted at a private English course in Semarang on April 24th 2024. Research method used is a qualitative method with case studies. Research techniques used are observation and structured interviews. The findings of the study have been presented in three categories of classroom management, that are: Teaching Standards, Rules, and Procedures, Classroom Climate, and Timing and Scheduling. Based on the results, teachers’ Classroom Management contributes to the students’ English skills.

Abstract

This research aims to (1) help increase students' learning motivation in English subjects by growing students' interest in English songs (2) obtain evidence that the singing method can improve student learning outcomes in English subjects. To find out whether this method is effective or not, the author used pre-experimental research with a quantitative approach. The research was carried out using stages: Pre-test, Treatment and Post-test. Because the method used is a quantitative approach, to analyze the data the author used Linear Product Moment Regression Analysis, while to test the effect of treatment on the sample the authors used the paired sample t test. The results of data analysis show that the correlation coefficient value rxy is 0.659. This means that the regression correlation coefficient value of students' interest in English songs is 0.659, which has a positive sign, meaning that the higher the students' interest in English songs, the higher the students' interest in English songs student learning outcomes will be. The validity test results of all questionnaire items have Pearson Correlation ® values > 0.3494 then it can be concluded that all items are valid. Meanwhile, the results of the reliability test used Cronbach Alpha with a value of 0.839 > 0.6, which means that the questionnaire items in the instrument were reliable for use. From the results above, the hypothesis states Student’s interest in English Songs can improve the value of learning outcomes in English Subjects for class VIII of SMP Negeri 1 Haurgeulis can be accepted
