Abstract

Fluctuations in Indonesia’s economic growth have affected labor absorption amid an increasing labor force and a declining unemployment rate in 2022. Nevertheless, low labor competitiveness and skill mismatches with labor market demand remain major challenges, particularly for young people. This study aims to analyze the impact of training and apprenticeship on employment probability in Indonesia while accounting for potential selection bias in participation in skill-development programs. The study utilizes data from the August 2022 National Labor Force Survey (Sakernas), comprising 752,688 observations. The analytical method employed is Propensity Score Matching (PSM) to estimate the Average Treatment Effect on the Treated (ATT), with employment status as the outcome variable and covariates including educational attainment, age, gender, area of residence, marital status, and school enrollment status. The estimation results indicate that participation in training has a positive and statistically significant effect on employment probability, increasing the likelihood of being employed by approximately 13–14 percentage points for training participants after matching. In addition, apprenticeship participation also exhibits a positive and significant impact on employment status, increasing employment probability by approximately 11 percentage points after controlling for observable individual characteristics. These findings suggest that both training and apprenticeship play an important role in improving employment opportunities, albeit through different mechanisms. Both indicate that skills development programmers can be an effective labour market policy instrument for improving youth transition to employment.

Abstract

The global halal industry is undergoing a paradigm shift from voluntary compliance to mandatory state-enforced assurance, particularly in Indonesia, where the halal food sector is a critical pillar of the national economy. However, the current halal certification regime remains predominantly product-centric and relies on static, document-based verification. This creates a significant information asymmetry for Islamic Financial Institutions (IFIs) when assessing the creditworthiness and Sharia compliance of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). This research proposes the "Halal Trust Score," a novel digital artifact and credit risk metric derived from a blockchain-based traceability system. Adopting the Design Science Research Methodology (DSRM), we architected and prototyped a permissioned blockchain network using Hyperledger Fabric. The system digitizes the halal value chain, from the Slaughterhouse (RPH) to the final retailer, capturing real-time behavioral data through QR code interactions. A bespoke smart contract algorithm aggregates this data into a dynamic Trust Score based on four weighted indicators: Certificate Activity (20%), Input Scan Frequency (30%), Output Publication Frequency (30%), and Chain Interaction Velocity (20%). Simulation results demonstrate that this scoring mechanism effectively translates qualitative supply chain behaviors into quantitative financial metrics, serving as a reliable proxy for the "Character" and "Capacity" elements of credit risk. By reducing information opacity, the Halal Trust Score not only facilitates more efficient, data-driven financing decisions for IFIs but also creates a mimetic and normative institutional pressure for MSMEs to maintain high integrity standards. This study contributes to the literature on Islamic Fintech by providing a validated framework for integrating real-sector behavioral data into monetary-sector risk assessment.

Abstract

The Joglosemar Metropolitan Area (JMA) is a National Strategic Economic Zone that plays a crucial role in driving regional economic growth based on tourism. Despite having high tourism and economic potential, this region still faces challenges in the form of limited connectivity and integration of the transportation system between tourism centers. This study aims to formulate a Trans Joglosemar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) planning innovation through a Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) approach to optimize the growth of a competitive and sustainable tourism sector. The research method employs a quantitative approach with spatial analysis and policy review. The results indicate that the development of the TOD-based Trans Joglosemar BRT has the potential to enhance accessibility and connectivity between tourist destinations, thereby facilitating the movement of KMJ tourists. The integration of BRT stations as connectivity hubs for tourists stimulates economic growth in the tourism sector. Furthermore, applying the TOD concept to the Trans Joglosemar BRT planning contributes to reducing dependence on private vehicles and supports the principles of sustainable urban development. This study concludes that the innovative planning of the Trans Joglosemar BRT with a TOD approach is an effective strategy for strengthening regional connectivity, enhancing tourism competitiveness, and supporting sustainable economic growth in the Joglosemar Metropolitan Area (JMA).

Abstract

The gender wage gap remains a persistent issue in Indonesia despite regulations promoting gender equality. This study analyzes wage disparities between men and women in formal and informal sectors using data from the 2023 National Labor Force Survey (Sakernas). A quantitative approach is employed, applying Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) on ln(wage) and Recentered Influence Function-OLS (RIF-OLS) to examine the gap across wage distribution quintiles. The results show that there is a wage gap between men and women with a significant negative effect, the penalty to women is greater in the informal sector with a coefficient of -0.4180 (significant at 1%) than the formal sector with a coefficient of -0.3415 (significant at 1%). In addition, the RIF-OLS results show that the wage gap is uneven across the income distribution, the sticky floor phenomenon is identified in the formal sector, indicated by the highest wage penalty against women in the lower quintile. This reflects that women are more disadvantaged at low wage levels and face barriers to upward mobility. In contrast, there is no strong indication of a glass ceiling, as the wage penalty in the upper quintile is smaller than in the lower and middle levels in both the formal and informal sectors.

Abstract

This study analyzes the factors that affect the Inequality-Adjusted Human Development Index (IHDI) in developing countries based on the UNDP classification. IHDI is used because it describes the quality of human development after considering inequality in the dimensions of education, health, and income. The study uses 2008–2023 panel data obtained from UNDP, the World Bank, the ITU, and other international sources. The independent variables analyzed include Adjusted Net Savings (ANS), Current Health Expenditure (CH), Income Share Held by the Bottom 40 Percent (INS), Life Expectancy (LE), Years of Schooling (YS), Gross National Income per capita (GNI), Gender Inequality Index (GII), and Mean Years of Schooling (MYS). Model selection was conducted using the Chow Test and Hausman Test, which established the Fixed Effect Model as the best specification. The results show that CH, LE, YS, GNI, and MYS have a positive and significant effect on IHDI, emphasizing the importance of improving education, health, and income in strengthening the quality of human development. INS has a negative and significant effect, indicating that increasing the income share of the bottom 40 percent has not improved the equity of human development outcomes without corresponding improvements in basic services. Meanwhile, ANS and GII do not have a significant influence. These findings emphasize that inclusive human development requires strengthening capabilities through education, health, and equitable income growth.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and provide additional empirical evidence on the long-term impact of public debt and budget deficits on economic growth in Indonesia between 2004 and 2023, using the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM). The simultaneous rise in public debt and budget deficits may lead to a potential long-term threat to economic growth. This study addresses a gap in the literature by examining the interaction among three key variables—public debt, budget deficits, and economic growth—over the long term (2004–2023) through the VAR-VECM approach, utilizing the most recent data available up to 2023. Using Indonesia’s time-series data from 2004 to 2023 as the study population, the analysis demonstrates a significant impact of public debt on economic growth, thereby confirming the proposed hypothesis. These findings highlight important policy implications, particularly the need to control public debt as a key factor in sustaining long-term economic growth.
