Abstract

Abstarct: The main problem of this research was “Is it effective to use card game in teaching non-binary antonym for the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 08 Prabumulih?” Therefore, the objective of this research was to find out whether or not it is effective to use card game in teaching non-binary antonym for the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 08 Prabumulih. The true experimental method was used in this research. The writers collected data from the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 08 Prabumulih with the population of 175 students, 70 students were taken through cluster random sampling procedure, in the sense that there were two classes randomly chosen as the sample. One class was the experimental group and the other class was the control group. To collect data, a written test was used. The analysis data was done by using the matched t-test.  Based on the result of the data analysis, it showed that the result of the matched t-test calculation was 6.090 and the critical value of t-table at 5% of significance level with df = 28 (29-1) was 1.701. It means that t-obt was higher than t-table, meaning that null hyphotheses (Ho) was rejected and alternative hyphotheses (Ha) was accepted. In conclusion, it was effective to apply the card game in teaching non-binary antonyms to the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 08 Prabumulih.

Abstract

The main problem of this study was “Is there any significant effect on the tenth grade students’ reading comprehension achievement after being taught through flexible grouping strategy and those who are not?” Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the effect of flexible grouping strategy on the tenth grade students’ reading comprehension achievement of Senior High school students of Daarul Aitam Palembang. This study applied pre-experimental method with pre-test and post-test design. The population of this study was all the tenth grade students of Senior High School of Daarul Aitam Palembang, in the Academic Year of 2019/2020 with the total number 56 students. The sample was 29 students were in experimental group from X IPA.  In collecting the data, a multiple choices and true or false test of narrative text was used, and the data were analyzed by using IBM SPSS Statistic. The result of this study showed that the experimental group students’ average score in pretest was 58.7, and in post-test it was 74.05. The value of t-obtained was 300.86 where the value of t-table was 1.70. It was assumed that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Besides that there was significant difference on the eighth grade students’ reading achievement between those who are taught by using flexible grouping strategy and those who are not taught in Senior High School of Daarul Aitam Palembang.  The results of using flexible grouping strategy revealed an improvement for students reading achievement. Keywords: Teaching, Reading, Narrative Text, Flexible Grouping

Abstract

Abstract The researchers had found that learning reading strategies is a key element in developing student comprehension. However, many teachers lack a solid foundation for teaching these reading comprehension strategies. Therefore, teachers need to be prepared on how to design effective reading comprehension strategies and how to teach these strategies to their students. Therefore this study aims to study the effective reading strategies in order to improve reading skills in language classes. The study is an action research applied to a number of 15 students in an intermediate level integrated skills course. The main question of the study is “Would reading strategies help my students’ reading comprehension studies?”. The result od the study indicate that the students had an improvement to a great extend have been tutored about the reading strategies. Keyword: reading strategies, predicting, visualizing, inferring, making connections, questioning, action research

Abstract

Abstract: Every learner has his own learning style, linguistic background knowledge or individual face of learning and developing. Therefore, the majority of foreign language classes involve students of varying abilities. One class can consist of learners who display a number of differences in their learning abilities, motivation, previous exposure to learning, learning style, personality, attitude, and hundred thousands other features that anyone can think of . The situation becomes one challenge for many ESL/EFL teachers in teaching mixed ability classes. This emerges some educators to differentiate the instructions, set grouping strategies, create well structured cooperative activities and integrate meaningful content for the learners who may struggle with first and second language literacy skills. Therefore, if the teacher wants to ensure that all students perform to their maximum potential, the teacher must identify these problems and deal with them accordingly.

Abstract

Pepaccur is a type of Lampung poetry which contains advice or message in the customary degree ceremony. In this research, data was collected from several regions belonging to the Lampung Abung community, such as Kotabumi Ilir, Blambangan Pagar, Surakarta, Bumi Agung, and Mulang Maya. The problem that will be examined in this study is about the structure contained in Pepaccur. The purpose and benefits of this study are (1) to determine the Pepaccur structure in the Pepadun community in the procession of taking traditional titles; (2) to revitalize Pepaccur Lampung Pepadun people. Descriptive method through qualitative approach is the method used in this study. Data collection techniques used in this study are (1) observation, (2) recording, and (3) interview. Data analysis techniques are carried out by identifying the Pepaccur structure. Based on ethnographic studies that are used as a foothold in this study the Pepaccur structure consists of a framework, diction, sound, tone, and class. (1) Pepaccur framework. Of the 6 Pepaccur text samples, there is only one Pepaccur text that does not have an opening stanza, ie in Pepaccur II text. In addition, the Pepaccur II text is also a text in the form of stories to bind Lampung women. (2) Pepaccur's diction. Based on the results of the analysis, the diction used by people who are Pepaccur is a diction related to marriage. (3) Pepaccur sounds. the sound found in Pepaccur text analysis is a sound pattern abc / abc, ab / ab, aa / aa, a / a. (4) Pepaccur tones. The tone in Pepaccur's text is advising. (5) figurative language. The figurative language found in the Pepaccur text includes; allegory, metaphor, and simile.Keyword: Pepaccur, Lampung Poetry, Language Structure

Abstract

Abstract : This research aimed to give clear description and concrete about the students’ ability in writing English abstract of final report at Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Programme Study of Politeknik Sekayu.The ability to write a clear and concise abstract of final report was indispensable skill to writers; thus it was essential for students to be aware of linguistic aspects of writing. This research used secunder data which English abstract of final report written by students’ of at Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Programme Study at Politeknik Sekayu.Thus,  the sample of this research was taken with Simple random sampling, it was a descriptive qualitative research which aimed to analyze grammatical errors. The source of data in this research were documents taken from students’ final report. The data were collected by using coding sheets. The findings of this research showed that the most common grammatical errors found in writing English abstracts of final report were word order with 24%. The possible solutions to overcome students’ grammatical errors were using indirect method in teaching grammar and prioritizing grammar structures to teach. Keywords: grammatical errors, writing English abstract

Abstract

The aim of this research was to increase the students’ skill in reading narrative text by using Know-Want-Learned strategy at the eight grade students of Junior High School 3 Palembang. This research of this study was conducted by using classroom action research. The data used in this research are the result the pre-test to know the improvement of students in reading narrative text. The mean of the pre-test was 64,5. The mean of the first cycle was 84,85, it indicated that the scores and the mean in first cycle were better than the pre-test. The percentage of students who got point 75 or more there was also grew up. In the pre-test, there was 10 students (25%) who passed or got score up to 75. In the post-test of cycle I the students who got point 75 or more there was 40 (100%) and the increasing was about 75%. In other words, the students’ skill in reading narrative text improved and became well in the first meeting to the next meeting. For the hyphothesis testing used t-test formula from the compilation, it could be seen that coefficient of it could be seen that coefficient of tobserved (16,72) > ttable (0,316). Thus, alternative hyphothesis (Ha) could be received. Based on the research, It could be get that using Know-Want-Learned (KWL) Strategy could increase the students’ skill in reading narrative text.

Abstract

The main problem of this study is  “What were the eleventh grade students’ perception on the use Johnny grammar’s word challenge application in learning prepositions and the impact of Johnny grammar’s word challenge application the eleventh grade at PGRI Vocational High School 2 of Palembang?”. This study aimed to investigate the eleventh grade students’ perception on the use Johnny grammar’s word challenge application in learning prepositions at PGRI Vocational High School 2 of Palembang. This data acquired from questionnaires based on four indicators, this research used a descriptive qualitative method in this study. Based on the achievement of the questionnaire, it can be concluded that all indicator high category shows that amounts to 9 (16.36%) students which means the students have comprehension ability is fair, the indicator medium category shows that amounts to 41(74.54%) students which means all of the students understand Johnny Grammar’s Word Challenge Application and the low category shows that amounts to 11 (20%) students which means the students half of them can not able to understand Johnny Grammar’s Word Challenge Application. So, it can be concluded that using Johnny Grammar’s Word Challenge Application can help students learn prepositions

Abstract

The objectives of  this study are to find out whether or not;  1) there is a significant increase in students’ reading comprehension achievement based on after they are taught by using visual scaffolding strategy and intensive reading strategy and those who are not. 2) there is a significant contribution of visual scaffolding strategy and intensive reading strategy towards reading comprehension achievement  of the high, average, and low achievers? This reserach used factorial experimental designs.  These designs are essentially modifications of either the posttest-only control group or pretest-posttest control group designs. The sample was the students of PGRI University of Palembang. Two classes were chosen in which first class was experimental with male students was applied and the second was the second experiemnetal group trained by intensive reading strategy with the female students. The results showed that First, Visual scaffolding and Intensive Learning Strategy technique affected the students’ reading achievement of PGRI University. The result of t independent test was the mean of experiment group higher than mean of control group. It could be concluded, experiment group and control group were significantly difference and the visual scaffolding and Intensive Learning Strategy technique was effectively to use in improving students’ reading achievement.  The Second, there was an interaction effect of visual scaffolding and intensive learning strategy technique and students’ learning achievement toward the students’ reading achievement.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the relationship between self-concept, reading attitudes, and reading comprehension of the ninth grade students of SMPN 51 Palembang. In this study 30 ninth grade students were selected as a stratified random sample. and tests are used to collect data. The analysis was performed using the Pearson product moment correlation coefficient, Normality Test, Homogeneity Test, Linearity Test and multiple regression. The results showed that the correlation coefficient between self concept showed the level of significant was 0.000 <0.05. showed the level of significant was 0.000 <0.05. The correlation coefficient between self concept showed the level of significant was 0.000 <0.05. The correlation coefficient between self concept showed the level of significant was 0.000 <0.05.
