Abstract

In interaction, people do a cooperative relationship among them. If they intend to ask something, they can express the idea in strategies in order to gain the goal. One strategy to fulfill the intention is politeness. By doing politeness speaker tends to avoid the ‘face’ of hearer, such as insulting or directing. Politeness influenced by power, social distance, and weight of imposition can be expressed by positif and negative politeness to lessen the irritating of the hearer.  Complaining letter in readers’ forum is a means for readers to complain their problem in newspapaper. The question arises:  Do the readers apply politeness in complaining in order to avoid FTA? This paper tries to answer the question by giving some examples of analysis of politeness strategy. Besides, the difference strategy of male and female will also be discussed. Those strategies affect the difference patern of  readers forum written by male or female showing the sexism

Abstract

This paper aims to describe forms of subjunctive sentences and their functions in German sentences. Based on the studies that have been conducted, it can be concluded that there are five forms of irrealer Konjunktiv in German sentences. Based on the functions, irrealer Konjunktiv includes: (1) irrealer Wünschsatz used to express the subjunctive indicating a wish, (2) irrealer Bedinungssatz used to express the conditional subjunctive, (3) Umschreibung des Konjunktivs II used to express an honorific meaning, (4) irrealer Vergleichssatz used to express a personification for one to be compared to another, and (5) irrealer Folgesatz used to express the subjunctive by giving (Verstärkung) an emphasis using adverbs.  Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan bentuk-bentuk irrealer Konjunktiv ’kalimat perumpamaan’ dan fungsinya dalam kalimat bahasa Jerman. Hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa bentuk irrealer Konjunktiv dalam kalimat bahasa Jerman terdiri atas lima bentuk perumpamaan. Berdasarkan fungsinya, irrealer Konjunktiv meliputi: (1) irrealer Wünschsatz berfungsi untuk mengungkapkan pengandaian yang bermakna keinginan, (2) irrealer Bedinungssatz berfungsi untuk mengungkapkan pengandaian bersyarat, (3) Umschreibung des Konjunktivs II mit würde + Infinitiv berfungsi untuk mengungkapkan pengandaian yang bermakna hormat, (4) irrealer Vergleichssatz berfungsi untuk membandingkan seseorang dengan yang lain, dan (5) irrealer Folgesatz atau Konsekutivsatz berfungsi untuk mengungkapkan pengandaian dengan cara memberikan penegasan (Verstärkung) dengan kata adverbial

Abstract

This naturalistic qualitative research attempts to reveal the use of honorific in West Cirebon. The research focus relies on the three aspects: (1) linguistic forms for honorific, (2) influencing factors, and (3) the principles underlie the used of the language. The data sources taken to this research are from men and  women  whose  professions  are  ‘pembatik’  and  who  live  in  Kalitengah kecamatan Tengahtani, West Cirebon of West Java. The research found that (1) the honorific forms for the address terms consist of words and phrases; (2) based on their culture and custom, the adreess terms used by the local society comprises of five areas such as; (a) personal address terms, (b) relative, (c) occupation,  (d)  title  both  for  academic  and  non-academic  degree,  and  (e) religious address terms. The factors influencing the use of the terms are social factors such as education degree, age, and economic level and situational, and situational factors which refers to with whom they talk to, what language used in the communication, the setting of the communication, as well as the topic talked  by  them;  3)  the  underlied  principles  are  the  willingness  to  make  a friendly communication and to show respect.

Abstract

Use of English loanwords in mass media like newspapers is so prominent. However, the writers still use the words even though the words go through meaning changes. Hence, this study aims to investigate why the writers still use loanwords in their article. Loanwords from the headline of Radar Kediri were taken as data. There were sixty-seven English loanwords variations used in the articles of the headlines in the time span of the study. Close and open questionnaires were administered to the writers and the editors of the headline articles. Questionnaires encompassed the English loanwords which the writers wrote in their articles were administered to them. Interviewing the other editor was also used as data crosschecks. This study found that, first, there are six different categories undergoing a meaning change in the headline of Radar Kediri based on Bloomfield semantic change classification, viz, Narrowing, Widening, Metaphor, Synecdoche, Degeneration, and Elevation. Second, there are six reasons why the writers use English loanwords in their articles: be more effective in conveying a message, be more global/common in use, be more modern, be more educated, to vary vocabulary in a sentence by using synonymous, and to avoid monotony

Abstract

There is no discipline  standing alone. What we know and what we create  or  engineer  both  directly  and  indirectly  are  influenced  by other people’s ideas. Semiotics as a discipline just appearing at the beginning of the 20th century has flourished not only in linguistics and  literature,  but  also  in  other  disciplines  such  as  anthropology, sociology,  psychiatry,  culture,  music,  arhitecture,  advertisement, and  even  politics.  We  are  all  aware  that  all  these  embryos  derive from  Saussure’s  ideas    which  became  the  foundation  of structuralism  such  as  synchronic-diachronic,  language-parole, signifier-signified,  arbitrary-motivated,  and  syntagmatic- paradigmatic. This paper will elaborate Saussure’s essential ideas, and their impacts to the studies of linguistics, literature, and other disciplines as well as the development of semiotics today.Tidak  ada  ilmu  yang  berdiri  sendiri.  Apa  yang  kita  ketahui,  apa yang  kita  ciptakan atau  rekayasa secara  langsung  maupun  tidak langsung  dipengaruhi gagasan  atau  pikiran  orang  lain.  Semiotika sebagai sebuah disiplin ilmu yang baru muncul pada awal abad dua puluh  telah  berkembang  begitu  pesat  dan  luas  tidak  hanya  dalam linguistik dan sastra tetapi juga dalam disiplin ilmu lainnya seperti antropologi,  sosiologi,  psikiatri,  budaya,  musik,  arsitektur,  iklan, dan  bahkan  politik. Kita  menyadari  cikal-bakal  semua  itu  adalah gagasan  Saussure  yang  menjadi  dasar  strukturalisme  seperti synchronic-diachronic, langue-parole,  signifier-signified, arbitrary-motivated, dan syntagmatic-paradigmatic.  Tulisan  ini berusaha  memaparkan  buah  pikiran  penting  Saussure, dan dampaknya  bagi  kajian  linguistik,  sastra  dan  bidang  lainnya  serta perkembangan kajian tanda saat ini.

Abstract

This study is a case study of expressing apology used by Javanese who speak English. The study employs speech acts theory proposed by Searle (1975) and Javanese culture by Hofstede (1991) to analyze the data. Data was collected using Discourse Completion Test (DCT) with twelve different situations. Participants of the study were Javanese living in Surabaya who speak English whose age ranges between twenty five to thirty. The result of this study shows that there are four types of speech acts expressed by the participants of the study, namely representative, directive, commissives, and expressive. Penelitian ini merupakan studi kasus tentang permintaan maaf yang digunakan oleh orang Jawa yang menggunakan bahasa Inggris. Studi ini menggunakan teori speech acts dari Searle (1975) dan budaya bahasa Jawa dari Hofstede (1991) untuk menganalisis data. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan Discourse Completion Test (DCT) dengan 12 (duabelas) situasi yang berbeda. Partisipan penelitian adalah orang Jawa yang bisa berbahasa Inggris yang berdomisili di Surabaya dengan rentang usia antara 25 sampai 30 tahun. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada empat jenis tindak tutur yang diekspresikan oleh partisipan penelitian, yaitu representatif, direktif, komisif, dan ekspresif.

Abstract

This study examines the generic structure and cohesive devices in the Final Project Report (FPR) presentation delivered in English by the Accounting students of Polines. Fourteen randomly selected subjects (10% of the third graders’ population) were involved and audio-recorded during their presentation. The recordings were then transcribed and analyzed using a descriptive-interpretative method. The result shows that the generic structure most presenters used was Greeting and Salutation–Self Introduction–Topic Introduction–Body–Summary–Conclusion, in which the Body mostly consists of Background or Object of the Study, Problem Statement, Aims of the Study, Research Method, and Results and Discussion, and the Summary consists of Conclusion and Suggestion. The major cohesive devices employed were conjunctives of Textual, hypotactic and paratactic types, referents of exophoric and anaphoric types, and repetition as part of lexical cohesion. The transition of stages was marked mostly with referents and specific lexical items. This study may contribute to teaching public speaking of the university students especially in presentation.

Abstract

This study attempts to find a relation between the amount of interest in poetry and the degree of sensitivity, especially among the college students. If a positive correlation can be found, scholars and teachers may be able to offer students with weak perception of the environment, poetry reading. Dr. Elaine N. Aron’s questionnaire, Highly Sensitive Person Scale 2007, was the tool of this paper to evaluate the hypersensitivity of students, the results of which were tested correlation with a number of five questions that was added to the original questionnaire. The added questions were to demonstrate the students’ interest or disinterest toward poetry, and through Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient and independent Samples T-Test it became possible to calculate the correlation of sensitivity tests and the interest in poetry. The results answered research questions, and it was found that except the question number five, there was no significant relationship between sensitivity and the other variables. However, the question number five which showed a positive relationship between sensitivity and the amount of empathetic understanding of those who are interested in poetry, could indicate a meaningful correlation by reminding that empathy is an equivalence of unconscious admittance

Abstract

Dalam menulis teks yang bersifat genre-based, para mahasiswa masih mengalami kesulitan, khususnya tentang bagaimana mengembangkan ide, membangun sturktur tematik yang benar, dan menggunakan cirri lexico-grammar pada teks. Untuk mengatasi masalah itu the scaffolding technique dibutuhkan dalam kelas Writing. Teknik itu diberikan untuk membantu para mahasiswa menulis sebuah teks, termasuk, persiapan, presentasi dan refleksi. 25 mahasiswa Fakultas Bahasa & Sastra, Dian Nuswantoro, dipilih untuk diberi pengarahan dan diminta untuk menulis teks genre-based dalam bahasa Inggris. Siklusnya diulang tiga kali. Hasilnya menunjukkan peningkatan yang signifikan pada kompetensi menulis teks yang bersifat genre-based itu.   Keywords    :    Genre-Based Writing, Scaffolding Technique, Students’ competence, Texts, Teaching.

Abstract

This study focuses on Chinese pronunciation errors by students of Chinese D3 Program at Jenderal Soedirman University. The data collected  using interview and observation methods were analyzed with the theory of transformational-generative phonology and a speech analyser program. The result shows that pronunciation errors occur because the consonants supposed to be pronounced with aspiration were pronounced without aspiration, and consonants supposed to be pronounced at the post-alveolar articulation were pronounced at the frontal alveolar. The factor causing the pronunciation error is the phonological system difference between Chinese and Indonesia, and Chinese and Javanese as the mother tongue of the respondents.   Penelitian ini membahas kesalahan pengucapan bahasa Mandarin oleh mahasiswa Program D3 bahasa Mandarin Universitas Jenderal Soedirman. Data diperoleh menggunakan metode wawancara dan observasi, kemudian data dianalisis dengan teori fonologi generatif transformasional dan program ‘speech analyzer’. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa kesalahan pengucapan bahasa Mandarin terjadi karena bunyi konsonan yang seharusnya diucapkan aspirasi, tetapi diucapkan tanpa aspirasi, dan bunyi konsonan dengan letak artikulasi ‘post alveolar’ diucapkan dengan ‘frontal anterior’. Faktor penyebab terjadinya kesalahan adalah karena perbedaan sistem fonologis bahasa Mandarin dan bahasa Indonesia ataupun bahasa Jawa, yang merupakan bahasa ibu para responden
