Abstract

The understanding towards values, norms ana culture of societies is a crucial matter nowadays considering the close distance among countries in the world. This phenomenon is undoubtedly considered as the result of the advancement of technology distributed and understood by people around the world as a big leap to comprehend societies with their various culture and customs. Thus, the understanding towards multiculturalism is an important issue in global societies to avoid prejudice and stereotypes of other ethnic and tribes. One of the ways is studying the values of multiculturalism either implicitly or explicitly through the work of literature as a reflection of human life. Literary work is regarded as an excellent medium for studying the richness of human nature and its culture considering the fact that only a few people are fortunate to have the opportunity to see and experience other culture. Time and capital constraints have given literary work spaces to accommodate someone's interest in experiencing values, norms and culture of other societies in different areas of the world.

Abstract

Chinese temples of kelenteng in Pecinan Semarang area resemble Chinese temples in Fujian and Guangdong provinces in Southern China. As the building to worship of Budha, Tao, and Confucius, kelenteng is built by applying “feng shui” principles as tradition in arranging space pattern. The application of “feng shui” in Chinese kelenteng constitutes the choice of location, site plan, the placement of God and Goddess statues and the usage of color in the ornamentation. Since its establishment until now the application of “feng shui” in Chinese kelenteng seems unchanged. As the asset of Semarang City, kelenteng is expected to remain eternal because kelenteng can show a characteristic identity or an image of Pecinan or China town complex; as well this complex can be tourism destination in Central Java.

Abstract

This study aims to identify variants of Islamic religiosity in Chinese Muslim life as reflected in the organization of the Indonesian Chinese Islamic Association (Persatuan Islam Tionghoa Indonesia/PITI). This organization has distinctive features about how dialogue between Islam, Chinese ethnicity, implementation of Indonesian Islamic law legislation, and Javanese culture occured. This study uses a symbolic-interpretative anthropology approach. The conclusion of this study includes as the following (1) the organizational system of PITI in Jepara district is driven by indigenous Muslims who are active as administrators of the Nahdlatul Ulama in Jepara district and only two people of Chinese descents are administrators, while others are members; on the other hand, the involvement of "influential people" in the political world in Jepara also supports its existence. As for the organization funding is obtained and managed independently in the management level in Jepara; (2) Islamic characteristics of the PITI Muslim community in Jepara regency include muallaf status, feeling of being a minority but having sufficient economic, secular-materialist tendencies, prominent Chinese culture, and still strong pressure from family circles for Islam; and (3) the dimensions of Chinese socio-culture and the lives of indigenous people are more visible in socio-cultural life than the influence of religious norms.
