Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) as a reflection of GenerationZ’s participatory culture through the use of slang on the TikTok platform in Indonesia. Theoretically,this study is grounded in the sociolinguistic perspective of Chaer and Agustina (2010), whichemphasizes that language is variable according to heterogeneous social contexts. Within thisframework, slang is understood as part of a dynamic sociolect and functions as a marker of groupidentity. The analysis employs the classification of slang forms by Allan and Burridge (2006) namely,fresh and creative, flippant, imitative, acronym, and clipping which is relevant for explainingGeneration Z’s linguistic adaptations in responding to the demands of fast-paced and aestheticallydriven digital communication. This study employs a qualitative netnographic approach withparticipatory observation of trending content from March 2024 to December 2026. Data consisting ofcaptions, video transcripts, and comments were selected through purposive sampling based oncriteria of virality, interaction intensity, and representation of slang forms until data saturation wasreached. The results of the study revealed 15 instances of slang categorized into four types accordingto Allan and Buridge (2006): 4 instances of “fresh and creative,” 3 of “flippant,” 4 of “acronyms,”and 4 of “clippings.” The research findings also indicate that the use of slang serves not only as acommunication tool but also as a performative strategy to maintain social existence amid FoMOpressures, aligning with Eckert’s (2019) perspective on language as a practice of identity negotiationin digital society.

Abstract

This study examines the Bakunun oral tradition as a cultural heritage of the Kerinci community in Jambi, which is currently in a critical condition due to weak intergenerational transmission and the pressures of modernity. The research problem focuses on the forms, existence, and meanings of the Bakunun tradition within Kerinci society, as well as its role in shaping and sustaining cultural identity, particularly among younger generations. The study aims to describe the practice of Bakunun, analyze its current condition of continuity, and reveal the social and cultural meanings embedded in it within the context of social change. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted through stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, with data validity ensured through source and technique triangulation. The theoretical framework draws on concepts of oral tradition and cultural identity construction, particularly Stuart Hall’s view of identity as a dynamic and continuously negotiated process. The findings indicate that Bakunun functions not only as a form of entertainment and moral education, but also as a medium for transmitting customary values, religiosity, and Kerinci cultural identity. However, limited regeneration and insufficient institutional support have placed this tradition at risk of extinction, highlighting the urgent need for revitalization strategies involving younger generations and educational institutions.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the stylistic aspects, including phonology, lexicon, grammar, and semantics, in the lyrics of the songs “Sialnya, Hidup Harus Tetap Berjalan” and “Untungnya, Hidup Harus Tetap Berjalan” by Bernadya, based on Geoffrey Leech's stylistic theory. This study uses descriptive qualitative research with the content analysis method. The research data consists of song lyrics excerpts analyzed based on the linguistic elements contained therein. The results show that in terms of phonology, there is the use of rhyme, rhythm, and sound repetition that supports the emotional atmosphere of both song lyrics. In terms of lexical aspects, the selection of simple and communicative diction is able to convey depth of meaning through its emotional value and context of use. In terms of grammatical aspects, the effective and straightforward sentence structure clarifies the main ideas being conveyed. In addition, in terms of semantic aspects, conceptual and connotative meanings are found that indicate a shift in perspective from disappointment to acceptance of the realities of life. These four stylistic aspects are interrelated and form a complete unity of meaning, so that the lyrics not only function as an expression of feelings, but also as a linguistic work that has aesthetic value and can be studied scientifically.Keywords: stylistics, phonology, lexical, grammatical, semantic, song lyrics.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis makna semiotik bawang Batak (Allium chinense) sebagai tanda budaya dalam dua masakan adat Batak Toba, yaitu arsik ikan mas dan dali ni horbo. Kajian ini berangkat dari pandangan bahwa makanan tradisional bukan sekadar kebutuhan biologis, melainkan sistem tanda yang mencerminkan nilai sosial, spiritual, dan filosofis suatu masyarakat. Dengan menggunakan teori semiotika Ferdinand de Saussure, penelitian ini menguraikan hubungan antara penanda (signifikan) berupa bentuk fisik dan fungsi bawang Batak, serta penanda (signifié) berupa makna sosial, spiritual, dan filosofis yang melekatkan masyarakat Batak Toba terhadap bahan tersebut. Metode yang digunakan adalah pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik kajian pustaka terhadap berbagai sumber antropologi, etnografis, dan semiotik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa secara denotatif, bawang Batak berfungsi sebagai penyeimbang rasa dan penyedap alami dalam dua hidangan adat, sedangkan secara konotatif ia melambangkan kesucian, keseimbangan, dan keharmonisan antara manusia, alam, serta leluhur. Dalam konteks sosial, bawang Batak menjadi simbol solidaritas dan persatuan dalam sistem dalihan na tolu; secara spiritual, menjadi lambang penyucian dan restu leluhur; dan secara filosofis, keseimbangan moral kehidupan. Dengan demikian, bawang Batak bukan sekedar bahan kuliner, melainkan tanda budaya multidimensi yang menghubungkan aspek kuliner, sosial, dan spiritual dalam Kebudayaan Batak Toba.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji representasi budaya masyarakat Betawi dalam lagu daerah Kicir-Kicir melalui analisis fungsi folklor dan makna kognitif. Lagu Kicir-Kicir dipandang sebagai bagian dari tradisi lisan yang tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai hiburan, tetapi juga sebagai media transmisi nilai budaya dan pembentuk cara pandang kolektif masyarakat Betawi. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan sumber data berupa lirik lagu Kicir-Kicir. Analisis data dilakukan melalui dua tahapan, yaitu klasifikasi fungsi folklor berdasarkan teori Bascom (1954) dan analisis makna kognitif berdasarkan pandangan Sapir (1929). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa lirik Kicir-Kicir menjalankan berbagai fungsi folklor, meliputi sistem proyeksi emosi kolektif, alat pengesahan praktik sosial, sarana pendidikan nilai, serta mekanisme pengendalian sosial. Ulasan dari makna kognitif, pilihan leksikal dan struktur bahasa dalam lagu ini tidak hanya merefleksikan realitas sosial, tetapi juga membentuk pola pikir masyarakat Betawi mengenai kebahagiaan, kebersamaan, keseimbangan hidup, dan etos kerja. Dengan demikian, lagu Kicir-Kicir merepresentasikan kearifan lokal Betawi yang merekam sekaligus membangun konstruksi kognitif dan nilai budaya masyarakatnya. Abstract

AbstractThis research aims to describe the forms of impoliteness strategies and functions in the utterances of characters in the Doracimin animated series. The theoretical framework employed is Jonathan Culpeper's theory of impoliteness. This research uses a qualitative and descriptive research design. Data were collected using the observation method and note-taking technique. The observation method was conducted by closely watching short animated videos of Doracimin, followed by note-taking technique to record the data and mark them according to the identified types of impoliteness. The data were analyzed using the pragmatic padan method with the constituent analysis technique. The research procedure consisted of four stages: data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and data verification. The results of the data analysis are presented informally through narrative descriptions. The findings of the study reveal that the characters' utterances in Doracimin contain complex impoliteness strategies and functions. The strategies identified include superstrategies such as bald on-record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, off-record impoliteness, and withhold politeness, as well as a metastrategy in the form of sarcasm or mock politeness. The functions of impoliteness identified in the data include affective, coercive, and entertainment functions. The entertainment function reflects various types of pleasure, namely emotional pleasure, aesthetic pleasure, voyeuristic pleasure, the pleasure of being superior, and the pleasure of feeling secure.Keywords: impoliteness, impoliteness strategies, functions of impoliteness, pragmatics, Doracimin animated series AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan bentuk strategi dan fungsi ketidaksantunan dalam tuturan para tokoh animasi Doracimin. Teori yang digunakan adalah teori ketidaksantunan Jonathan Culpeper. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif dan penelitian deskriptif. Pengumpulan data menggunakan metode simak dan teknik catat. Metode simak dilakukan dengan menyimak video pendek animasi Doracimin, dilanjutkan teknik catat dengan mencatat data dan memberi penanda sesuai jenis ketidaksantunan. Analisis data menggunakan metode padan pragmatis dengan teknik pilah unsur penentu (PUP). Prosedur penelitian terdiri atas empat tahap, yaitu pengumpulan data, reduksi data, penyajian data, dan verifikasi data. Hasil analisis data disajikan dengan metode informal dalam bentuk uraian naratif. Hasil penelitian membuktikan bahwa tuturan antartokoh dalam animasi Doracimin mengandung strategi dan fungsi ketidaksantunan yang kompleks. Strategi yang ditemukan meliputi superstrategi berupa bald on-record impoliteness (ketidaksantunan langsung), positive impoliteness (ketidaksantunan positif), negative impoliteness (ketidaksantunan negatif), off-record impoliteness (ketidaksantunan tersamar), withhold politeness (menahan kesantunan) dan metastrategi berupa sarcasm or mock politeness (sarkasme atau kesantunan semu). Fungsi ketidaksantunan yang teridentifikasi mencakup fungsi afektif, koersif, dan hiburan. Fungsi hiburan mencerminkan berbagai bentuk kenikmatan, yaitu kenikmatan emosional, kenikmatan estetis, kenikmatan voyeuristik, kenikmatan karena merasa superior, dan kenikmatan karena merasa aman.Kata Kunci: ketidaksantunan, strategi ketidaksantunan, fungsi ketidaksantunan, pragmatik, animasi Doracimin
