Abstract

There have been quite a lot of studies on the Samin community with various approaches. This research aims to explain the symbolic meaning and essence of Samin's teachings/stitutors using the concept of signs as stated by Saussure and semantics as explained by Pateda using the literature study method. The data was processed using steps as offered by Miles Haberman: data reduction, data recording, and inference. The results of this research are (1) Samin's teachings contained in angger-angger (pratikel, pangucap, and lakonana) are still being maintained, (2) social changes have begun to be discovered, (3) using ngoko language in every domain, (4) symbolic meaning of the three anggers: do good to others, do not indulge in lust, be honest, one word with deeds, pay attention to property rights; (because) the essence of life is one, forever, and death is essentially just "changing clothes", (5) the symbolic meaning and essence of certain words/situations in the Samin community as a distinguishing characteristic from communities outside Samin, such as ibu bumi, bapak angkasa, rukun(an), anak, turun, dan siji.

Abstract

Humans live in interaction with culture and tradition, both those inherited from ancestors and those that have undergone acculturation. There is a spiritual touch between tradition and humans, which is the meaning given to the series of rituals that eventually evolve into a tradition. The relationship between humans and their God is then represented in a tradition, one of which is Wiwitan. This tradition, which has existed since ancient times, is a routine practice for farmers before starting their harvest, with the hope that their harvest will be abundant. This study is philosophical research that uses the method of philosophical reflection. This philosophical reflection involves an examination of key concepts in the thinking of Eliade, such as homo religiosus, hierophany, and the sacred and the profane. The researcher can explore how Eliade's ideas can be applied to understand the Wiwitan tradition. A review of the historical literature on Wiwitan, case studies, or anthropological literature also helps to understand the context of the evolution and relevance of the Wiwitan tradition through the ages. The results of this study show that the Wiwitan tradition is an important part of the Javanese farmer's life, which not only functions as a ceremonial rite before the harvest but also reflects their view of nature as a sacred space. In this ritual, farmers honor nature and Dewi Sri, the goddess of fertility, asking for blessings and protection. With the concept of homo religiosus as proposed by Mircea Eliade, Wiwitan reflects the basic human need to connect with the sacred, providing spiritual meaning amidst changing times.

Abstract

The novel is one of the most popular forms of literature that serves as a medium for authors to represent their characters. Novels are literary works that can represent the life of society and a means of criticizing the social phenomena witnessed by the author. One of the novels that illustrates the social phenomenon of alienation in Japanese society is Ningen Shikkaku by Dazai Osamu. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze social phenomena in Ningen Shikkaku to identify the phenomenon of alienation using Melvin Seeman's theory of alienation, which is grouped into five aspects, including powerlessness, meaninglessness, normlessness, social isolation, and self-estrangement experienced by the main character Yozo Oba. The results show that the five aspects of alienation experienced by Yozo gradually became primarily relevant to what happened in Japanese society at that time. His father controls Yozo's life, and he does not know what he wants and does not want, so he lives a life without meaning and purpose. Yozo is also dominated by feelings of emptiness or loss of meaning, which leads to a desire to end his life. Yozo also experiences social isolation and alienation. In Japanese society, suicide or hikikomori as an effect of alienation, like Yozo's, is common until now.

Abstract

In the field of comparative historical linguistics, examining language kinship can illuminate the relationships between languages in a particular region and their evolutionary paths over time. Sundanese and Balinese are two prominent languages that originated in different areas of Indonesia, yet both are part of the Austronesian language family. This study aims to investigate the kinship relationship between Sundanese and Balinese by employing lexicostatistics and phonemic correspondence techniques, providing a structured approach to analyzing their linguistic connections. Data collection was conducted through interviews, focusing on 200 Swadesh vocabulary words that encompass basic terms. The findings reveal a kinship degree of 41% between Sundanese and Balinese, indicating that they diverged approximately 2,058 years ago. Several phonemic correspondences were identified, including /a ~ ə/, /ɣ ~ ə/, /d~ r/, and  /a,u/ ~ o/. The analysis further unveiled sound change processes such as lenition, merger, and splitting. Notably, Sundanese appears to be more closely aligned with Proto-Austronesian (PAN) than Balinese, as it has preserved certain phonemes, including /b/, /d/, and /h/, without significant alterations. These findings support the conclusion that Sundanese and Balinese belong to the same language family classification.

Abstract

Korea is famous for the creative industry such as drama which set in modern times and the kingdom era (saeguk). In the saeguk drama, Korean Indigenous knowledge is also shown. It represents their traditional life, such as livelihoods, how to make tools, survive in four seasons, how to farm or garden, and also about health. One of the saeguk with the theme of Indigenous knowledge is Jewell in the Palace, with the background of the lives of physicians and healers in the Joseon era. This study aims to identify the health themes in the drama text. Therefore, we use qualitative content analysis. The results of the study show that in Jewell in the Palace, there are twelve main themes about health: the relationship between body changes and health, herbs, flowers, acupuncture, healthy drinks, environmental influence on health, benefits of plants for health, spices, fruits, benefits of animals for human health, healthy tips, and natural ingredients for skincare. The conclusion is that the Korean drama Jewell in the Palace has main themes and sub-themes about health based on their characteristics, types of plants, names of animals, and the benefits. The results of this study can be a source of reference for further research from several disciplines: cultural science (cultural and media studies), health (traditional medicine), education (the effectiveness of drama as a source of learning about Indigenous knowledge), and research studies to analyze the use of entertainment media (films, movies, comedy series, and dramas) as sources of research data.

Abstract

Labuhan Hajad Dalem is an essential ritual in Yogyakarta’s tradition; its primary purpose is to represent prayer and to perform a spiritual cleansing by placing and leaving out some offerings in particular sacred places. Sinjang and Semakan are some of the components of the offering in the form of long fabric to cover a body part. Each Sinjang and Semekan has a different name to illustrate a distinct Javanese cultural value. The naming process is influenced by cultural background, which is Javanese culture, and the name composition is also affected by Javanese linguistic structure. Therefore, this research aims to answer how the naming creation of the offerings, especially the sinjang and semekan using syntactic analysis and an anthropological linguistics approach. Six names of sinjang and fourteen names of semekan are sourced from the official Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat website. The names follow a pattern of phrases and clauses, primarily consisting of noun phrases constructed with single nouns, adjectives, or combinations thereof. Additionally, there are clauses formed by noun-verb or noun-verb phrase structures. These names predominantly feature nouns related to various birds and plants, such as perkutut (zebra dove) and mlathi (jasmine), alongside adjectives representing colors like gadhung (green) and pethak (white). Using these colors in the names signifies gratitude, often towards nature and the divine. Furthermore, the selection of nouns reflects the daily life and surroundings of the Yogyakarta community, highlighting the interconnectedness between cultural traditions and local environments.

Abstract

This research aims to explain the existence of cultural capital and its role in strengthening disaster resilience in various regions of Indonesia as a country that often faces natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. This research also aims to assess cultural traditions and practices in efforts to increase preparedness and response to natural disasters in various communities. This research uses a qualitative approach. Data was collected through observations and interviews in areas prone to natural disasters using Bourdieu's social capital analysis framework. This research uses purposive sampling to identify representative communities where cultural responses to natural disasters can be observed and documented. Primary data was taken through observation and direct involvement with the communities to understand the use of cultural knowledge in dealing with disasters. The results of this research show that communities rich in cultural heritage have stronger resilience and proactive disaster management behavior, utilizing historical wisdom and more advanced communal practices to mitigate the impact of disasters. Communities with less prominent cultural capital tend to experience greater difficulties, although they are gradually developing new cultural mechanisms to overcome the threat of natural disasters. The conclusion of this research shows that cultural capital is an important factor in efforts to strengthen community resilience to natural disasters. Efforts to integrate cultural insights into national natural disaster management policies and practices are very necessary. This integration not only preserves cultural heritage but also strategically increases response efficacy and disaster preparedness.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the schemes used by Romance Scam perpetrators to manipulate victims, which ultimately leads to psychological and financial impacts on the victims. The analysis applies the Dramaturgy concept and Psychological Manipulation theory, which are relevant in understanding the interaction patterns between perpetrators and victims. This research is a literature review, with data collected from secondary sources, including Japanese online news portals such as Ameblo and Newspostseven, as well as social media platforms like Instagram. The Dramaturgy concept is used to explain identity falsification and the avoidance of direct communication by the perpetrators, while the Psychological Manipulation theory is applied to examine exaggerated expressions of love and requests for money by the perpetrators. These schemes significantly impact victims both psychologically and financially, often leaving long-lasting effects on their mental well-being and economic stability, indicating the extent of significant psychological and financial impacts on the victims. This research is to enrich the literature on cybercrime in Japan, particularly focusing on the emotional and relational aspects in the context of fraud.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the values of “Manunggaling Kawula Gusti” contained in the kawung batik motif, which contains deep philosophical meaning in Javanese culture. “Manunggaling Kawula Gusti” is a teaching that emphasizes the union between man (kawula) and God (Gusti), describing an individual's spiritual journey towards awareness of the divine presence in every aspect of life. This teaching is often associated with Sheikh Siti Jenar, a controversial figure in Javanese history, who taught that God is a being that transcends everything, encompassing both the material and mental realms in their entirety. Sheikh Siti Jenar, who introduced the view that God is a being that encompasses the entire universe, both matter and soul, and transcends the understanding of human senses. On the other hand, the kawung batik motif is one of the classic batik motifs that has a repeating elliptical geometric pattern. This motif is not only appreciated for its beauty but also for its deep symbolic meaning. Kawung batik symbolizes the harmony between microcosm (humans) and macrocosm (the universe) and reminds humans of the importance of maintaining balance and harmony in life. This motif also reflects the teaching of “Sedulur Papat Limo Pancer”, which teaches about the four main directions that symbolize the elements of life that must be balanced with conscience as the center. This research uses the literature study method by analyzing various journal articles and relevant books. The results show that there is a strong philosophical connection between the concept of “Manunggaling Kawula Gusti” and the Batik Kawung motif. This motif is not only an artistic expression but also a visual reminder for Javanese people of the importance of maintaining a harmonious relationship with God, fellow humans, and nature.
