Abstract

Writing is an interesting activity which can develop students skill and help them to express themselves. For the teacher, students writings can be data source for her linguistic research. This paper depicts the relation among syntactic units, tenses and meanings taken from the students writing. The objectives of this research are to reveal the ill constructed syntactic units, to show what types of sentences the students often use, and to show how the message can be conveyed. The methodology of this research is descriptive qualitative research. This study is included into qualitative research. Hence, the theories of research methodology taken from books are compiled by Punch (1998), Ritche and Lewis (2003), and Sugiyono (2009). The used theories are syntax theory compiled by Miller (2002) and Carnie (2007), theories of Semantics compiled by Griffiths (2006), Hofmann (1993), Saeed (2001), Palmer (1981), the theories of general linguistics compiled by Traugott and Pratt (1980), Quirk (1985), O Grady (1989), Burling (1992) and Chaer (2003), theories of grammar compiled by Burton (1994), Deterding and Poedjosoedarmo (2001) and Azar (1989) and theory of writing compiled by Oshima and Hogue (2007).The results of this research are how the message is relayed in the end. The messages written in the students essay are not clear because of the poorly constructed syntactic units and the improper tenses. In addition, the students tend to use either simple sentences or compound sentences in their writing.

The method of this study is qualitative while the design of this study is case study. The data collecting techniques were observation, interview, and document analysis. The results showed that collaborative writing gives opportunity for EFL students to experience the better writing process where students can share and discuss in exploring ideas, developing ideas, expressing ideas, and evaluating the writing product. In terms of their self-esteem, students with low self-esteem were discouraged and tended to depend their writing work on the higher level students. In contrast, students with high self-esteem were encouraged in writing when they were responsible to lead their friends during writing process.

Abstract

The paper reports on the result of a study aiming to investigate the comparison of ideational meanings conveyed by the novice and professional presenter in multimodal presentations. The study used a qualitative approach, especiallya videography research design, involving two presenters: a novice presenter and a professional one. The video data of the two presenters’ performance were selected as sources of data. The collected data were analyzed by administering a multi-layer analysis. The results show that: a) in terms of language, both presenters used two most dominant types of Processes: relational and material. However, a delicate analysis indicated that the professional presenter used relational processes more than the novice one; and b) in terms of gesture, both presenters realized ideational meanings through indexical gestures the most. However, a detailed analysis revealed that the professional presenter employed more gestures than the novice one. The study exploresa pedagogical implication for teachers/lecturers, material designers, and policy makers to provide a balanced emphasis on language and gesture used by the studentseither in the teaching and learning activities or in the designed learning materials.

Abstract

A highlight of the Indonesian National Curriculum 2014 is the proposed shift in emphasis in teaching methods to a Student Centered Learning SCL of communicative approach. It has major pedagogical benefits, which are particularly relevant to language learning. This is to identify and to know how the responsibility of SCL puts on learners, for their own learning by using variety of English language actively as medium of instruction during class. It involves students in more decision-making processes, and learn English by doing rather than just by listening and performing meaningless tasks which are often not in context, and therefore unreal to them. They are 90% doing participating and the real thing while students practicing English for real-world skills. Learning becomes more active and memorable: because it is personalized, relevant to the students own lives and experiences, it brings English use alive, and makes it relevant to the real world. The more actively involved students are in their own learning, the more they are likely to remember what they learn. By using communicative activity, English again becomes more real and part of the students lives.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the comparison of translation quality produced at online translation of Google Translate, SDL Free Translation and Tradukka. In consequence with the existence of this research, is expected to give positive contribution to the users of online translation services in particular and translation researchers generally in providing information about the quality of translation produced. Google Translate, SDL Free Translation and Tradukka both have pages that are quite simple but have different levels of translation quality. Thus research is to compare between Google Translate as one of the sites that often opened and produced translation quality more accurate, acceptable and has a high level of readability with two other sites. In addition, there is still much doubt about the quality of a translation machine in producing translations of quality.
