Abstract

Teacher needs to give various methods to teach writing in order to increase the students’ writing achievement. To help the students write better, teacher should be able to be more creative and innovative in teaching writing. In 4.0 era, the students prefer using modern technologies (online media). Modern technologies can help the teacher and students access the lesson material, update the information that relevant with the lesson, communicate each other, or watch the teacher’s videos like on YouTube about the materials easily. There are many digital technologies such as; Blog, Website, and others. Those media can be used as learning media to support students’ writing skill, one of them is Schoology. Schoology is micro blog educational website that can be applied by teacher and students for collaborating about resources, assessment, and content on a secure and safe learning management platform. Students can post their writing task in Schoology group that created by the teacher. Then, the teacher can evaluate the students’ writing and give some suggestion or comments. In other words, Schoology give stimulation for students to try their ability in writing achievement and increase the students’ interest. This literature study reviews several papers studying the implication of Schoology as a learning media platform. The purpose of the study is to find out the implication using Schoology to the teachers and students. The findings expected that Schoology can be an alternative learning media platform that used by the teacher and the students to support teaching and learning process in writing.

Abstract

The paper analyzes listening comprehension of English language skills for twelfth grade students at Sinar Husni high school in Medan. The paper answers the following questions: 1. what are the factors that determine students' interest in learning English? 2. How frequently listening educational instruments are used to improve the listening skills for student? 3. What are the common difficulties that face the respondents in the questionnaire implemented in this paper in terms of listening comprehension? Thus, the paper aims to find the factors influencing English listening comprehension and the strategies to be taken that might improve students’ listening comprehension. The paper indicates that the current problems face students in developing listening comprehension skills are speed speech, limited knowledge of vocabulary, and limited knowledge of the subject in question. Further studies could be conducted to gauge the issue of listening comprehension at the university level-among university students-and the use of listening educational instruments.

Abstract

An abstract has important role in summarizing and promoting its research article. Because of the important role, abstracts contain discourse patterns that have communicative purposes. This study aims at investigating discourse patterns and its linguistic characteristics of applied linguistics article abstracts in English. The research corpus consisted of 30 research article abstracts in English written by English native speakers and published in Applied Linguistics journal and Journal of English for Academic Purposes in 2016-2018. The data were analyzed by using five-move abstract pattern proposed by Pho (2013). The results showed that the common patterns of the abstracts were the patterns which contained five moves and four moves. Furthermore, the abstracts tended to use present tense and active voice. It can be concluded the results provide new findings among study of discourse patterns of English research article abstracts written by English native speakers, especially in applied linguistics.

Abstract

Monotony fashion in presenting teaching materials implies the reliance on utilizing one medium to serve the teaching materials. Teachers need to be creative in serving their teaching materials to avoid boredom and monotonousness. Infographic is a versatile tool which can be employed to serve any purposes. In addition, it makes complex information eye-catching. Through its graphic color and animated picture, infographic strengthens the purpose of the lesson taught. Many publishers in 21st-century era reinvent infographic tools to design the infographic. This paper, however, is aimed at reviewing Canva as the infographic tool. Canva provides various themes and professional layouts for creating the compelling infographic to present the teaching materials. In addition, it is a simple tool which is extremely easy to use.

Abstract

This research aimed to find the significant differences of students' achievement in writing procedure text using team pair solo and think pair share, This research used a quantitative and experimental method. The research design was pretest posttest control group. The population was the students of class VII SMPN 33 Semarang by using simple random sampling was VII D as the experimental group, VII C as the control group, and VII B as the tryout class. The research instruments used were test and questionnaire. The result of the test is t arithmetic is lower than t table so the hypothesis is not accepted. It means that there is no significant difference of students achievement in writing procedure text between students who were taught writing using team pair solo and those who were taught by using think pair share. The result of posttest in experimental class is 77.61 and control class is 77.38.

Abstract

The mainstream of pop literature has developed fast now. It tells the lifestyle of urban society which is too glamour, consumptive and hedonistic. In this era of industrialization and capitalism phase influence them to trap in luxurious habit. It does not only affect the upper class but also thepoor society. The activities such shopping branded stuff, hanging out in the mall, changing the up to date mobile phone only for chatting and playing social media become the addiction. Unsurprisingly, there are many people do everything to make it come true. They never realize, they are the victim of this fake light life. One of them is Sales Promotion Girl (SPG) workers. The hedonism lifestyle has hegemonized their life until they take the risk to come in this Job. They do not know, their body has been exchanged by hedonism lifestyle. This phenomenon does not only happen in the reality but also in the pop literature as like Indah Hanaco‟s work. Her novel theCurse of Beauty tells about the true lifestyle of SPG that is trapped to hedonism lifestyle, therefore, they are willing to do sell their precious life to the prostitution world. This paper aims to show the form of SPG‟s hedonism lifestyle in this novel. Then, it tries to find the causes of thosehabits until they are willing to sell their body. Finally, it comes to the purpose of the author to take this situation become the pop literature.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate following questions; (1) to identify the types of request strategies used by male and female EFL learners, (2) to identify the types of politeness strategies used by male and female EFL learners, (3) to describe the similarities and the differences of the request strategies used by male and female EFL learners, (4) to define the factors contribute in choosing the politeness strategies of request used by male and female EFL learners.This research was a qualitative case study focuses on single case, request strategies phenomenon. Data were obtained through Discourse Completion Test (DCT) consisted of nine request strategies. Forty eleventh graders of MAN 1 Sragen were selected as participants. The data were analyzed by determining the request strategies based on Trosborgs theory (1995), politeness strategies based on Brown and Levinsons theory (1989), and factors contribute in choosing politeness based on Leechs theory (2014).Results showed, there were four types of request strategies conducted by male and female learners; indirect request, hearer oriented conditions, speaker oriented conditions, and direct request. There were four types of politeness strategies conducted by male and female learners; bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, off record. In performing request strategy, male and female learners tended to be not imposing the request, the factors in choosing politeness depended on level of intimacy (close, familiar, unfamiliar) instead of gender. The data showed, gender does not give much impact on influencing the chosen of politeness strategy.

Abstract

Character building can be done early in the family. Parents need a special formula in educating children's character in an era of disorder. In the digital age, parents can attend childcare training or courses through web learning. This training is to overcome the limitations of place, time, and costs for parents. The purpose of this paper is to explain as an alternative to building the character of children from families through web learning. The method in this paper uses in-depth literature studies. The results of this study that character development can be started from the family as the first pillar of education. Parents can get knowledge about children's character through web learning.

Abstract

The purposes of this study are to explore the ways in promoting Education 4.0 in English for Survival class, to contend the reasons of promoting Education 4.0, and to discover the students’ viewpoints toward the use of Whatsapp and Instagram platforms for promoting Education 4.0. The research method used in this study is a qualitative approach in the form of case study. The participants of this study are the students and lecturer of English for Survival class. The instruments of data collection are observation, interview, and teaching reflexive log. The findings show that there are three ways in promoting Education 4.0, seven reasons of promoting Education 4.0, and two different students’ perspectives of promoting Education 4.0 in English for Survival class. In addition, the students and lecturer need to consider several aspects in promoting Education 4.0 in English Language Teaching.

Abstract

Digital Natives students born into an era of instant networking. It makes everything have a connection with technologies. Digital natives having sophisticated technology knowledge and skills that can be potentially harnessed for better learning engagement inside the classroom. Seesaw is a simple way for teachers and students to record and share what's happening in the speaking classroom. Seesaw gives students a place to document their learning, be creative and learn how to use technology in language learning class. This paper will discuss the seesaw application within implementation problems and its solutions. The researcher will use a qualitative study for this research. The study's data is collected from the second semester until sixth-semester students of English Department at Tidar University.
