Abstract

English is spoken at various intercommunication settings and levels. Thus, speakers have to master pragmatic aspects to avoid misunderstandings during communication. As a result, Pragmatic competence can help EFL speakers. The purpose of this study is to look into EFL teachers' perspectives on how to help students build pragmatic competence. The qualitative research approach was used in this study, utilizing descriptive qualitative as the framework. In order to collect the data, this study used teachers' responses on a questionnaire derived from five features in sources of teacher beliefs. Three teachers from varied backgrounds participated in this study as respondents. Teachers' beliefs in pragmatic competence development are taken from five sources: teachers' experience as language learners; experience from teaching; teachers' own personality; experience from the school, parents, government, and local society; education-based or research-based principles. This study will, ideally, add to the body of knowledge in the field of education, allowing English teachers to better understand, discover, and enhance their teaching in the area of pragmatic competence development.

Abstract

Reading is a vital skill for junior high school students as it is tested in the national assessment. Unfortunately, they often experience comprehension difficulties such as confusion about the meaning of words or sentences, inability to connect ideas in a passage, omission of or glossing over details, difficulty distinguishing significant information from minor details, and lack of concentration during reading. This classroom action research aims to improve reading comprehension by using mind-mapping techniques on the eighth graders of SMPIT Insan Permata, Bojonegoro. Field notes, observation checklists, interviews, questionnaires, and reading tests were used to collect data. The results of the field note showed that the mind mapping technique was 96.7% employed properly in the classroom based on the teaching plan. Furthermore, the result of the interview demonstrated that the mind mapping technique could solve their reading problems and help them understand a text. The results of the observation checklist also indicated that all students were actively involved and gave positive responses during the implementation of the mind mapping technique. Meanwhile, results from pre-and post-questionnaires revealed that previously uninterested students became more active, enthusiastic, and motivated in comprehending a text. The results from the preliminary test and the tests of cycles 1 and 2 indicated that the students’ average scores kept improving from 53.18, 76.36, and 95.45. In addition, the total number of students passing the minimum score of 75 also kept increasing, subsequently by 2, 7, and 11 students in the preliminary test, test 1, and test 2. In conclusion, the mind mapping technique was successful in improving the students’ reading comprehension of recount text.

Abstract

In the process of English language learning, the use of textbook takes a big part in the teaching and  learning process. However, not all of the textbooks could present an appropriate cultural content material. Therefore, cultural content analysis in the textbook is important in order to measure it’s appropriateness. This research aimed to find out what types and how culture are represented in a textbook. The research object was Kemendikbud’s English Textbook entitled “Think Globally Act Locally” for Junior Highschool IX. The research used descriptive qualitative approach with content analysis technique to analyze the data. The result shows which culture that are more dominant which then will be discussed what types should be more applied in the EFL textbook. The result shows that the source culture and pragmatic sense representation is the most dominant. However, the cultural content should be balanced.

Abstract

This study examines the ideologues' language used in the Lily by Tsana beauty product advertisement. The study is intended to depict the connection between Tsana’s popularity significantly affecting and influencing Lily by Tsana's branding. The study takes the quote and slogan that the advertisers used as a text and then analyzes each advertisement's meaning and ideology. The study applies a textual analysis to the motto and slogan that the advertiser used in the product’s advertisements as its research method. It adopts Fairclough’s concept of three-dimensional critical discourse analysis as its approach method. The textual analysis involves interpretation of the beauty product advertisements of Lily by Tsana and how the ideology of Lily by Tsana beauty products composed with the stereotypes and slogan “Makeup should never be used to hide yourself. It should be used to enhance your natural beauty.” In addition, this study revealed how Tsana, known as Rintik Sedu, influences the beauty product by using bait to specify the target market for Lily by Tsana itself. The advertisements of Lily by Tsana offer an idealized lifestyle of how natural beauty can make you love yourself more and assume that the audiences are unable to decide rationally and then consider the words of the advertisement are indeed valid. Thus, the founder of Lily by Tsana used her language power to gain control over her fans and consumers. Ideological language is used to control people’s minds, and so is the popularity and social standing of the founder. The analysis results in the analysis of personal pronouns, positive adjectives, the declarative mood in clauses, cohesion, parallelism, modes, social relations, and the connection between the founder’s social standing and beauty products.

Abstract

An English textbook is needed by the learners to study the materials presented by the teacher or learn independently. A textbook must contain fewer errors, especially in grammar, because they can confuse the students and influence the outcome of their learning process. This descriptive quantitative research is aimed at investigating the types of grammatical errors and determining whether the book is applicable or not for teaching sixth-grade students. The grammar inside the book was analyzed by Depraetere and Langford as well as Azar's theories. The data sources were derived from the sixth-grade elementary school textbook entitled "One Stop English Learning", which was published by Edutama Mulia in 2018 and written by Bashori Alwi. This book has been widely used by elementary schools in rural and urban areas. The researchers found 6 grammatical errors in unit 1, and 1 error in unit 2. Those errors were related to tenses, plural nouns, and subject-verb agreement. Since the grammatical errors in this book were less than 50%, the book is still considered good enough to be used as a learning source. However, teachers and students must be more careful with these small errors.

Abstract

Research on Archaicism of Vocabularies in Panai Malay from Language Attitudes is an effort to maintain and save Panai Malay vocabularies from archaic threats. The problem being researched is how the people's language attitude towards the Panai Malay vocabularies, so that the Panai Malay vocabularies can be saved from archaicism. This research uses quantitative and qualitative research methods. The research data, both oral and written, were obtained using the proficient and listening method. The findings obtained from this study are (1) The proud attitude of MPL (Malay Panai Language)  speakers towards MPL is very negative. This is indicated by the presence of 5 of the 7 indicators of pride given which the teenager respondents responded negatively. (2). The loyalty attitude of MPL speakers towards MPL is still quite positive. This is indicated by the fact that only 2 of the 7 indicators of loyalty given were responded negatively by respondents. (3). Awareness attitude towards MPL norms is classified as negative. This is indicated by the presence of 3 out of 6 indicators of awareness of the given norm which respondents responded negatively.

Abstract

Most Hollywood production heroes come from western nations who are white, but not all heroes come from western countries, but some black heroes come from African nations. Marvel dares to raise a story with a background of black people as superheroes who managed to change the world's eyes that black people also have power over life in the world. This research has two objectives. First, analyzing the Black Panther film script is related to Black Heroism, a minority in the Hollywood film industry. Second, examine the elements of Black Heroism contained in the Black Panther film script to find out the aspects of Black Heroism. This research was conducted at the university using materials in the form of film script texts, films and academic books. The data collection technique in this study used library research, namely reading in-depth on the Black Panthers film script and marking and identifying data related to the research problem to be raised. This technique is used because the data source is written. The collected data is then analyzed using textual analysis or text analysis. It can be concluded that the character of the superhero in Marvel is different depending on the background of the superhero.

Abstract

The research is aimed at describing the types of translation errors made by the English Literature Students in translating news text from English into Indonesian. The present study employed a descriptive qualitative study. The research subject was the sixth-semester students of the English Literature Study Program, Faculty of Economics, Law, and Humanities, Universitas Ngudi Waluyo who have taken a Translation Course. The news text was taken from the Jakarta Post and it consists of 22 paragraphs. The news texts were then translated into Bahasa Indonesia and they become the target texts as the sources of data to investigate the students’ translation errors. They were then classified into five types of errors according to Vilar et al. (2006, 698). The research results revealed that there were 108 translation errors in the form of incorrect words (60,2%), punctuation (18.5%), missing words (12,03%), and word order (0,9%). It can be concluded that the most frequent errors made by the students are incorrect words, punctuation, and missing words.

Abstract

This study aims to develop online digital module by using Heyzine online application. The method used was simple ADDIE model of RnD. The object of this study was grammar and the subject was the second semester of english department students in IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro. The module prototype made based on the result of RPS analysis and then it was uploaded to the application. The result showed that the module was eligible to be used in the class with the value are 83%  for the media effect, 83.3% for instruction, and 60% for design from the experts. Meanwhile from the students are 86,7% for media effect, 80% for instruction, and 86,7 % for design.

Abstract

Video game translation is a complex process that uses many aspects from other types of translation, such as literary translation, subtitling strategy, and audiovisual translation into a dynamic whole. Video game presents as a new medium in translation study. Even though video games translation is a new thing in translation study, the translation practice has been done many times over the past last year.This study will do research on a Game named “Genshin Impact”. The characters were chosen because both of them have different characteristics and behaviour in the game. Moreover, both of these characters come from a different town that has a different culture which leads to differences in their utterances. Therefore, both characters have different kinds of utterances which will be interesting to trace how the subtitlers apply the strategies for each character’s utterances.This research aims at analysing the subtitling strategy employed to translate the Qiqi and Bennett utterances, from English to Indonesian. All utterances of both characters will be analysed in this research. English will be the source language and Indonesian will be the target language as the data for this research. There are many strategies found which are used to translate both characters’ utterances, such as condensation, imitation, and transfer. It is expected that the research will find a result which might contribute to the game subtitlers.
