Literal reading, as the lowest level of comprehension is considered important to be mastered by students before they work with higher level of comprehension. This is a longitudinal case study aims to explain the effect of literal reading mastery on the higher levels. This study involved 15 students of English Literature students observed since they were in 1st semester to 4th semester. The instruments used are working sheets to measure students’ ability in each level of comprehension. The findings showed that students with good and very good mastery of literal comprehension worked good on interpretive, critical and creative level. The students with poor mastery of literal comprehension did not have good results on interpretive, critical and creative level. Abstract

As long as people live in society, communication serves their vital need to convey their messages in the conversation. In doing conversation, speakers speak to each other in a certain order. It is called turn-taking in conversation. Turn-taking is an important aspect of conversation to get a smooth conversation. As a result, one must be understood and be aware of the techniques. However, a conversation sometimes does not run smoothly. In this situation, there might be something disturbing in the process of conversation. Therefore, an irregularity occurs that caused the conversation not to run well or might be cut off. Irregularity in conversation happens for certain purposes and the researcher aims to find out the form and the reason for irregularities performed by the host and the guest in “Loukgolf”s English room” talk show. To answer the problem, this research uses descriptive qualitative method. In analyzing the data, the researcher uses Natalia and Subekti’s theory to classify turn taking strategies and uses a system symbol from Jefferson and Cutting to represent the form of turn taking in transcribing the conversation. Based on theory there are four types of turn taking strategies. They are taking the turn, holding the turn, yielding the turn, and turn taking irregularities. Based on data analysis, this talk show found 79 turn taking strategies that categorize as regular 45 data consist of 19 taking the turn, 8 holding the turn, and 18 yielding the turn while the irregularities 34 data consist of interruption 18 data, and overlap 16 data. In addition, the researcher found 6 reasons of turn taking irregularities those are 4 asking for clarification, 1 asking for help, 2 rejection, 9 completions, 3 showing urgency, and 2 correcting. Based on the result the researcher concludes that turn taking occurs in each conversation both regular and irregular either with positive reasons or negative reasons depending on the context.

Abstract

A thesis is a challenging scholarly writing task at the university level. Previous studies showed that an effective writing process is necessary to complete writing tasks. Therefore, it is assumed that effective process is also necessary to complete thesis writing well. This qualitative research applied a case study design to explore the writing process of a proficient graduate student in writing a thesis. The participant of this study was a graduate student from a private university with cum laude predicate. The interview was used as the main data source with document analysis as a data source for triangulation. Models of writing processes from the process-genre approach were used as the main theory to discuss the findings. This research revealed that the student went through stages of writing well with various activities. In the pre-writing stage, the student reflected on her surrounding to find the problem to solve, read numerous references and discussed the topic with the experts to gain a deeper understanding. In the drafting stage, the student always provided a specific time for writing and simultaneously integrated her reading into her writing. In the revision stage, the student got feedback from many experts, then she selected the feedback before applying them to her writing. During the revision, the student also simultaneously edited her writing. She also published her thesis several times. The student gained many benefits from each stage of writing, such as improving academic writing skills and changing mindset in perceiving writing specifically and perceiving life in general. However, she also faced challenges during the writing process, such as feeling bored with the tedious process and dealing with her perfectionist to stay realistic. From this research, it can be seen that proficient students recursively went through each stage of the writing process, which resulted in a quality thesis.

Abstract

Translation is one of the media to provide understanding to other language users. One of the media often translated is a song. Song is a medium that is not limited by distance and language. Some of the songs have been translated into several languages. In translating the song, there are two possible versions of the translation. The first is a direct translation, that is, a translation meant to find out the meaning of the song from the source language (SL) to the target language (TL). The second is a translated version which can be performed for commercial purposes. Both have different procedures in translation. It is, therefore, challenging to examine the translation procedures applied to see the differences in how both versions are rendered. In this research, the object of the study is the Japanese song “Ano Yume wo Nazotte” by Yoasobi. This song has two English-translated versions. The first is a literal or direct translation and a translation specifically for singing. Vinay & Darbelnet’s SCFA translation procedures are applied in this research to reveal the procedures in these two versions of the translation. This research found that in the direct translation of the song, the procedure that is commonly used is transposition. As the sentence structures between the Japanese language and English are different, the use of transposition becomes dominant. Meanwhile, the translation created specifically for singing also has transposition as the dominant procedure, but this version also widely uses the inversion procedure to maintain the natural aspect of the TL. From this research, we can see that the transposition procedure is the most appropriate procedure for translating a text with different structures in their SL and TL, and if the purpose of translation is to maintain its sing ability, the procedure applied is inversion.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the graduates’ perspectives on the usage of English as communication on board vessels, between ship to ship or ship to shore. The identification was made by investigating the maritime institution graduates or maritime alumni perspectives which focused on the language terms of using the English language through radio communication. This research adopted a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis to investigate the language elements. The study sample consisted of 8 Nautical Graduate Students from three Maritime Institutions in Indonesia who had been working at an ocean-going vessel for 2 years or more. The data were collected and generated from their perspective answers on the questionnaires and also from radio communication transcripts. The results showed that the communication that happened on board vessels which were done by the deck department was successful enough but still less in using language components such as good grammar and correct pronunciation. Then, the English language user or skillful communicator must know how to send the message well in order to avoid miscommunication and should consider the English competence in order to avoid accidents and incidents at sea.

Abstract

Darah Garuda is a movie that has background of Indonesian struggle after Independence Day namely during the Military Aggression and the Revolutionary that occurred in several location such as Central Java and Bali. In the movie depicted that the Dutch are still holding out on various missions to keep controlling Indonesia. The success or failure of their actions provokes reactions and views how exactly Indonesian’s character, including about women acting as two different things, fighters and victims of violence. This research tries to explain how the Dutch view as a Western representation about Indonesian people, especially women as representatives of the East, and what efforts were made to show resistance that presented in the movie. This study uses Orientalism approach initiated by Edward Said. The results show Dutch considers Indonesia as a stupid nation, unable to stand alone and always dependent on them, as evidenced by statement “You will not be able to survive one week without us here. You will kill each other.” Women for them is objects of sensuality, talking about them only as a matter of sex and satisfaction. Women that considered to be weak actually able to fight by pretend to be a man, taking to the battlefield, taking up arms, and killing the colonialist.

Abstract

This paper aims at bringing to light the importance of exercising language in a free, poetic and radical way, understanding such an exercise as absolutely necessary to challenge dominant discourses and practices. In this sense, writing in any of the discourse genres can be seen as an ability that needs a lot of exercise. Our language needs to acquire the force of language that only the poetic and free exercise with it can provide. In the case of the construction of a digital game aimed to be used in Elementary Schools, all the dialogues were written in verses to encourage children to read and write poetic texts, Research was founded on participatory methodology (Freire, 2005) and the results suggest that children learn faster when involved in games and poetic texts that facilitate their memorization
