Abstract

Skill-based English language teaching (ELT) programs offer various learning opportunities for learners to master the skills in using the language. However, research on the challenges of such programs is still scarce in literature. Therefore, this study was aimed to examine recent research articles on the implementation of skill-based ELT programs in higher education in terms of the types of skills featured in the programs, the issues, and the merits of the programs. The study employed a systematic literature review. The reviewed articles were retrieved from 2014 to 2022 using digital paper search tools and filtered systematically using exclusion and inclusion criteria. A total of twenty-five manuscripts were included and analysed under the three key points: types of skills featured in the ELT programs, issues related to the implementation of skill-based ELT programs, and merits of the programs. The results showed that the majority of studies covered multiple skills, with only seven studies reporting one skill taught in the programs. Interestingly, there were only six studies which reported the issues of the programs, while twenty reviewed articles discussed the merits. The issues revealed from the study were categorised into those related to students, teachers, and course materials; some of which were specified as materials in the syllabuses and diverse students’ backgrounds. The study found out that the advantages of using skill-based approach in ELT outweighed the drawbacks since it could help students develop skills more accurately, deepen knowledge, improve technology literacy, accommodate their needs, and enjoy the lessons. With this study, a further investigation on the development of the program design is suggested, particularly in designing skill-based programs which enable learners to use the learned skills and knowledge in real-life situations.

Abstract

Understanding computer systems in a foreign language can be challenging, leading users to rely on machine translation tools to overcome language barriers. However, the effectiveness of these tools varies, so it is crucial to assess their performance. This study aims to evaluate the translation accuracy of two popular machine translations, Google Translate and ChatGPT, by examining the errors they produce. The research uses Koponen's translation error category. The study focuses on translating the installation GUI texts of Windows 11 Education into Indonesian. The main objective is to determine the error categories and their distribution in the translations created by Google Translate and ChatGPT. The findings will help developers improve their translation algorithms and guide users in choosing the most appropriate translation system for specific situations, especially when dealing with computer systems. The research identified five error categories from six categories proposed by Koponen in the translations generated by Google Translate and ChatGPT. A total of 29 errors were found, distributed as follow: omitted concepts (17.24%), added concepts (24.13%), untranslated concepts (20.68%), mistranslated concepts (3.44%), and substituted concept (34.48%). In term of relation error only one type is found, that is added participant. This study provides valuable insights into the performance of widely used machine translation tools in real-world situations, emphasizing areas for improvement to enhance their accuracy and reliability, ultimately benefiting both developers and end-users.

Abstract

This study compares readers' responses to printed and digital poetry, focusing on video poetry Sarmin dan Kampung Masa Kecilnya written by Ade Ubaidil to understand how different presentation mediums impact engagement, interpretation, and emotional connection to poetry. With advancing technology challenging print media, questions arise about how format influences literary works, particularly poetry. Authors, publishers, and educators must adapt to changing reading habits and preferences by understanding reader responses to printed and digital media. Employing qualitative methods, the study conducts a survey, focus group discussions, and in-depth interviews to explore participants' experiences, preferences, and perspectives. The survey measures emotional involvement; explores mood, atmosphere, message understanding, and multimedia influence; and examines the preferences concerning memory recall and authorship authenticity perceptions. Of the 65 students surveyed, preferences differed when asked directly about reading the poem Sarmin dan Kampung Masa Kecilnya, with 40 preferring digital, 23 printed, and 2 both. Digital formats showed mixed effects on reader engagement, emotional response, and comprehension. While digital readers demonstrated higher interest, emotional response, and mood understanding, they showed less understanding of tone and storyline compared to print readers. Multimedia was largely viewed as beneficial. Digital formats exhibited better memory recall but raised more concerns about authenticity, with more students trusting printed materials. Recommendations varied, with 30 students preferring digital, 22 printed, 6 both, and 7 suggesting format depending on the reader and text. These findings underscore the complex relationship between format choices, reader engagement, and perceptions of authenticity in contemporary literature consumption. Flexibility and consideration of individual tastes and literary content are emphasized for adapting to evolving preferences

Abstract

This study examines the influence of Home Atmosphere and EFL Interest on Students' Performance in Writing Final Projects. The research aims to understand how these factors contribute to students' success in academic writing within an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. A sample of 150 EFL students participated in the study, completing surveys measuring their home atmosphere, interest in EFL, and writing performance. The study employed a quantitative approach, utilizing correlation analysis and multiple regression. Results indicate strong positive correlations between Home Atmosphere and Writing Performance (r = 0.68), and between EFL Interest and Writing Performance (r = 0.75). Multiple regression analysis revealed that both Home Atmosphere (β = 3.2, p < 0.001) and EFL Interest (β = 4.1, p < 0.001) significantly predict Writing Performance. The model explains 72% of the variance in Writing Performance (R-squared = 0.72). These findings suggest that both a conducive home environment and a high level of interest in EFL play crucial roles in students' ability to write effective final projects. The study contributes to the understanding of factors influencing academic writing in EFL contexts and provides implications for educational practices and policies aimed at improving students' writing performance.

Abstract

Gender roles can influence the language style acquired by each individual. Both men and women have their language styles.  The language style used by men tends to be more objective based on logic, while women use words that tend to be expressive according to their feelings.  This article discusses the language style used by food review content presenters on the YouTube channel "Duo Pengacara", which aims to reveal the differences in language styles between female and male presenters.  The author compares two videos containing the content of wives and husbands as object sources.  This research uses a pragmatic stylistic theory approach in gender-based sociolinguistic studies to examine differences in language styles found in video interactions.  The method used is descriptive qualitative by explaining each finding and then comparing the differences in language styles.  The research results showed 43 types of language use styles, which were categorized based on five language styles.  The findings of this research show that the language styles between women and men in the Duo Pengacara food review video object are in coresponding with previous research which assumes that women tend to involve feelings, suportif, and long winded  and men are more realistic, informative and to the point  in their arguments.

Abstract

This research is entitled "Translation Techniques and Quality Assessment in Video Game Localization: Genshin Impact Prologue Chapter''. This research discusses the translation techniques and quality assessment employed in localization of the prologue chapter of the popular video game, Genshin Impact, into Indonesian. In this research, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative methods outlined by Ary et al., (2010) to analyze the goal of this analysis. The data used in this research comes from the prologue of the Genshin Impact storyline, which consists of three narrative parts and focuses on the dialogues between characters. To achieve the research goal, the researcher used theoretical framework of Molina and Albir (2002: 509) about translation techniques to classify the translation techniques used in the localized version of Genshin Impact, and The Quality Assessment model proposed by Nababan (2012) to evaluates the translation quality based on Nababan’s criteria of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. There were more than 400 data analyzed qualitatively to identify the types of translation techniques used and to evaluate the quality of the translation. The localized dialogues mostly translated using the amplification translation technique, with established equivalence being the second most frequently used technique. The quality of the translated version of the game also showed an excellent result with a good score on accuracy, acceptability, and readability. This research is entitled "Translation Techniques and Quality Assessmentin Video Game Localization: Genshin Impact Prologue Chapter''.
