Abstract

Feedback is of importance in language for language learners, since it is useful to evaluate the learners’ ability and performance when using the target language. Nowadays, with the development of technology, learners have begun to make use of educational applications, like Grammarly to help them review the grammar, spelling, punctuation, and suggest replacement for the identified errors in the English texts. The primary data collected for this study are the results of the student’s grammar test, which test items were taken from the feedback generated by Grammarly. Nugroho (2021) states that feedback on students’ errors is crucial in the learning process, so that students can learn from their mistakes and avoid repeating the same mistakes in the future. The results in this study show that the student managed to correctly identify most of the grammatical errors he previously made in his thesis. The findings show the number of incorrect numbers decreased quite significantly to 11 out of 35 which fell into 6 subcategories with the determiner as the most problematic grammatical error.

Abstract

A stand-up comedian needs to have good communication skills and ability to deliver material in a humorous way. This becomes a challenge for a comedian that has speech impairment, one of whom is Nina G, the stuttering comedian. Wingate (in Bloodstein, et.al, 2021) argues that stuttering is characterized by involuntary repetitions or prolongations in the utterance of short speech elements that occur frequently and are not readily controllable. These characteristics are also observable in her speech. This research is aimed at investigating the features of stutters in Nina G’s speech, specifically in terms of the linguistic elements such as syntactic (phrases), lexical (words), phonetic (sounds) elements of the stutter. The data were taken from Nina G’s performances uploaded on YouTube, and a descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze the data. The results of the preliminary analysis reveal that the most dominant characteristic is sound repetition (48.3%) which occurs in common nouns (43.4%) and when the initial sound begins with [s] (39.16%). The next is word repetition (17.6%) which frequently occurs in simple preposition and simple conjunction, followed by prolongation (12.3%) which occurs in common noun and the sound [ɪ] (13.62%). Then, syllable repetition (11.9%) happens most when she utters lexical verbs and initial syllable beginning with [s] (23.52%). The rest are phrase repetition (4.7%) that occurs in adverb and simple preposition, and block (5.2%) which mostly appears in lexical verb. Thus, it can be concluded that Nina G’s speech demonstrates certain patterns of stutter characteristics. Furthermore, it is also found that the situations she is in do not affect her stuttering characteristics at all. This research also suggests that despite her speech impediment, Nina G still succeeds in communicating her ideas and delivering jokes in her stand-up comedy performances.

Abstract

The industrial revolution 4.0 brought many changes in various sectors of life, including education. It also impacts curriculum changes. In the latest curriculum, MBKM, one of its characteristics is student-centered learning with one of its methods, namely case-based learning or problem-based learning. This study aims to find out how deep and extensive research has been conducted between 2013-2023 regarding problem-based learning in English teaching and the issues that develop in it. To reach those aims, the researchers use the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) as a data collection and reporting protocol. The findings revealed a noticeable increase in publications emphasizing problem-based learning as the main focus in the last three years. Among the numerous publications reviewed, the majority consisted of quantitative research studies. The research subjects predominantly comprised college and undergraduate students, while the most frequently chosen topic was problem-based learning in teaching writing. This comprehensive finding will reveal publishers, authors, research methods, issues, gaps, and novelties in problem-based Learning research that researchers can use for future research.

By employing a qualitative approach, it resulted a conclusion that most swear word dominated by men. Furthermore, the study categorized each sentence into McEnery's (2005) fifteen distinct linguistic forms of swearing, facilitating a comprehensive analysis of the findings based on relevant theoretical frameworks. Understanding the intricacies of strong language use can contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of language and gender dynamics

Abstract

Translation shifts occur when content is translated from one language to another, due to either target language structure constraints (servitude) or translators' choices (options). With the growing use of machine translation services like Instagram Translate and Twitter Auto Translate on social media, understanding these shifts is important for effective cross-cultural communication. This study aims to compare translation shifts in the English translations of Jokowi's Instagram and Twitter accounts, focusing in the performance of these machine translation services. The research will analyze a sample of posts from Jokowi's Instagram and Twitter accounts, translated by Instagram Translate and Twitter Auto Translate. The study will use a combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis to identify different types of shifts, such as level shifts and category shifts, and to determine whether they result from servitude or optional choices made by the translation algorithms. Additionally, the research will assess the accuracy and idiomatic quality of the translations produced by these services, considering potential challenges related to context, idiomatic expressions, and cultural references. The findings will help improve understanding of machine translation performance in social media contexts and inform future improvements to translation algorithms. By examining translation shifts in Jokowi's Instagram and Twitter accounts, this study seeks to enhance communication and understanding on social media platforms across language barriers. The research also aims to provide valuable insights for users of machine translation services, particularly within the rapidly changing domain of social media platforms.

Abstract

The The speech act of refusing is an action that can give an unpleasant feeling to the interlocutor. This study aims to describe the comparison of speech acts of refusal in Japanese and Banyumas Javanese. In the work environment based on the relationship between the speaker and the interlocutor (jouge kankei and shinso kankei). This study used a descriptive research method with the Discourse Completion Test (DCT) instrument. The research object consists of native speakers of Banyumas Javanese and native speakers of Japanese. Based on the data analysis, it can be seen some similarities and differences in the strategies used by native speakers of Banyumas Javanese and Japanese in the work environment. In general, native speakers of Banyumas Javanese and native Japanese speakers use the strategies of {wabi}, {riyuu}, and {fuka} as the main strategies in refusal. However, several strategies are not used by native Japanese speakers, including {koshou} and {kantoushiteki hyoutsutsu} in rejecting close superiors and close friends. In using {riyuu}, native Javanese Banyumas speakers tend to use concrete and varied reasons, while native Japanese speakers use vague reasons. Judging from the politeness strategy according to Brown & Levinson (1987) the rejection strategy used by native Javanese speakers tends to use positive politeness while native Japanese speakers tend to use negative politeness strategies.
