Abstract

In this digital era, translators cannot ignore the advantages of using machine translation. This research aims to compare the translation works carried out by machine translation with human translator in translating Indonesian short story into English. In comparing, the researcher focuses on the finite changes between machine translation and human translator. The research method used is descriptive-qualitative method proposed by Enio Cipani and comparative study by Robert L Stake. Meanwhile, for the finite changes, the researcher uses Jim Miller's theory of finite and non-finite clauses. Related to the data, he chooses one of the short stories on the page of Dalang Publishing, a publisher based in San Mateo, California, United States, namely Han Gagas’ short story Pekik Burung Kedasi di Tepi Kahayan which was translated by Umar Thamrin becoming Crying Cuckoos over the Kahayan. The findings of this research are that the Indonesian short story which originally had 2844 words after being translated into English by a translation machine, i.e.  Google Translate, became 3487 words. Meanwhile, a human translator translated it into 3210 words. Regarding sentences, the sentences in the Indonesian short story, whose total number is 241 sentences, after being translated by the machine translation became 242 sentences. Meanwhile, the human translator translated it 254 sentences. Focusing on the finite, 297 fundamental changes were found in the works of machine translation compared with human translator (including the changes of nouns, adjectives, etc.). Moreover, among those changes, there were 213 finite changes. It means that 71.72% of finites in the text translated by machine translation underwent the finite changes. Thus, it can be concluded that concerning the sense of sentences, the work of machine translation was quite different from the human translator in translating a short story from Indonesian into English.

Abstract

The increasingly rapid development of information technology in the current era of globalization is having a very strong influence on the world of education. Global demands require the world of education to always adapt to technological developments to improve the quality of education. Teachers are an important component in the learning process. The teacher's spirit of professionalism and creativity will be able to improve the learning process  so as to improve the quality of education. To make all this happen, concrete things are needed so that the quality of learning is even better. Based on initial observations, there are still problems in improving the quality of learning, such as the lack of awareness or motivation of students to learn English, especially narrative text material. Teachers and students are used to conventional learning methods (experimental research) and feel comfortable with this way of learning so they don't feel confident in trying new methods in innovative learning, especially those based on technology. Several literature studies explain that the use of various media, including internet technology-based applications, has now supported increased student learning. including the use of canva application for learning which has a significant impact on students. By using canva application, the learning process is not boring, teachers can teach with creativity, and teach skills to students. This is in accordance with the findings of (Garris Pelangi, 2020) and (Yundayani et al., 2019), who found that the learning strategy of using Canva for education allows students to gain a better understanding and mastery of subject matter, thereby helping students to personalize their learning experience. they. Next, according to the findings of Fauziyah, Widodo, and Yappi, students' perceptions of using Canva in class had a lot of impact on improving their writing skills and they felt enthusiastic about learning using canva for education application (Fauziyah, Widodo, Yappi: 2022). The following findings show that through Canva educators are able to design teaching presentations as well as make recordings. This can help educators to increase digital literacy and teaching creativity for students (Maolida and Salsabila, 2021). canva application can be used in the educational realm, even during the current independent curriculum era.

Abstract

The novel “A Thousand Splendid Suns” is written by Khalid Hosseini, an Afghan American writer, about the lives of Afghans in Afghanistan. Considering the novel as a social semiotic, this paper intends to analyze the politeness strategies used by the two main characters: Mariam, the female protagonist, and Rasheed the male antagonist to conclude whether the female character is more polite or the male character. This paper is qualitative research, and it uses the theoretical framework of Penelope Brown and Stephen Levinson. The result of the paper indicates that both the characters used bald on record dominantly followed by positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record; also, the result indicates that women are more polite than men in the novel. It is because the female character used more off record and negative politeness than the male character. This paper adds to our knowledge of how the female and male characters are portrayed in the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, and it also suggests that future researchers conduct ethnographic research to conclude about the politeness of the male and female in Afghan Society itself.

Abstract

This descriptive-qualitative research investigates the use of logical metaphors in children's book translations published by the Agency for Language Development and Cultivation. These translations are categorized into four reading levels: Pembaca Awal (Early Level), Pembaca Semenjana (Intermediate Level), and Pembaca Madya (Upper-intermediate Level).Due to the inherent differences in difficulty among these levels, the research examines translation techniques, shifts, and the quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability. To ensure trustworthiness, the study employs triangulation through various data-collecting methods and source data selection. These methods include document analysis and focus group discussions (FGD) with three raters. Additionally, domain, taxonomy, componential, and cultural-theme analysis were used to analyze the data. The results indicate that the most commonly used technique, established equivalent, maintains the logical metaphors without shifting them, leading to positive effects on accuracy and acceptability. Similarly, implicitation, paraphrase, compensation, and transposition techniques also contribute positively, although they are less frequently used. In contrast, other less common techniques such as discursive creation and deletion, shift both the logical meaning, resulting in decreased accuracy and acceptability.

Conducted in a private University in Surabaya, the participants consist of 20 students from the sixth semester which are divided into two classes, 10 students are in control class (conventional treatment) and 10 students in experimental class (translanguaging practice). This research uses mix-methodology, by using quantitative method to know the result of poetry writing score of the students and qualitative method to do in-depth interview to students from translanguaging class. The result shows that the score of poetry writing of the students in translanguaging class are higher than those who are from the control class and the students feel enjoy with translanguaging in the poetry writing class.

Abstract

Language is dynamic, one of which is the change in meaning that is strongly influenced by cultural development. The culture of a society depends on the development of science and technology that can affect people's mindsets from different generations. There are several generational groups, namely silent generation/matures (<1946), baby boomers (1947-1964), generation X (1965-1980), generation Y or millennials (1981-1995), and generation Z (1996-present). However, people who are still in their productive age are Generation X, Y, and Z. The purpose of the research is to describe the dynamics of the meaning of the entrepreneurial mindset in generations X, Y, and Z, as well as the relationship between the concept of entrepreneurial mindset and culture of Indonesian society. This research was conducted through linguistic relativity studies. The method used is a descriptive qualitative and quantitative method with data analysis using the triangulation technique. This research involved 57 respondents from generation x, y, and z groups. The data of this research is in the form of questionnaire results based on the mindset of entrepreneurs and the culture of Indonesian society. The result is there are four proverbs that are contrary to the mindset of the entrepreneur, that is, savings base rich and a little bit long to become a hill in contrast with the way of mindset do not save money. But there are four verses that are in line with the mindset of the entrepreneur, that is, a day is a thread, a year is a piece of cloth, and the first time is fun, then is pain, then it is fun. The mindset of the X, Y, and Z generations is more likely to use the mindset of Indonesian culture.
