Abstract

This article uses descriptive data research to determine how many auxiliary verbs were used in news stories included in the article. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the use of auxiliary verbs in the news section of CNN News in order to determine the frequency of auxiliary verbs and how it relates to the characteristics of news text. This research was compiled. The CNN News corpus, which consists of news articles, belongs to the group of soft news, with a total word count of 923 from 25 pieces of an online news article. The auxiliary verb types used in this study are those compiled in Areeluck Harnmontree’s auxiliary verb compilation.

Abstract

Reading is one of the English language skills that should be mastered by students especially for Senior High School students. The tenth graders of SMA El Shadai Magelang in the school year 2018/2019 still found difficulties in understanding the narrative text.There are two objectives of this research; the first is to know whether the use of Sustained Silent Reading Strategy can improve the learning motivation in the narrative text reading comprehension and the second is to know how great the improvement of the narrative text reading comprehension of the tenth graders of SMA El Shadai Magelang in the school year 2018/2019 is.To collect the data, the writer used non test (observation, questionnaire, and documentation) and test technique. The data was analyzed using Fowler’s formula and descriptive analysis.As the results, The mean score of the observation sheet from Pre-Cycle, Cycle I, and Cycle II were 50.71% ,71.42%, and 81.47%, while the improvement of the observation sheet was 30.75% from Pre-Cycle to Cycle II. The mean of the students’ score in Pre-Cycle were 67.5. In Cycle I the mean score was 71.42, while in Cycle II it was 85. The improvement of the students’ score from Pre-Cycle to Cycle II was 17.5 points.The writer concludes that the use of sustained silent reading strategy can improve the motivation in learning narrative text reading comprehension and there is a great improvement in narrative text reading comprehension of the tenth graders of SMA El Shadai Magelang in the school year 2018/2019.Keywords: Reading comprehension, Sustained Silent Reading strategy, Narrative Text.

Abstract

Writing is one of the important skill that should be learned by the students in Senior High School besides speaking, listening, and reading. Based on the observation before, this skill was difficult enough to be learned by the tenth graders of SMA El Shadai Kota Magelang. Most of the students still had low mastery of vocabulary and found difficulties in writing English text.There are two objectives of this research. The first one is to know whether the use of Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic (VAK) Strategy can improve the students’ learning motivation in recount text writing skill. Secondly, it is to know how great the improvement of the students’ recount text writing skill who are taught using VAK Strategy.The type of this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR). It was divided into Pre-Cycle, Cycle I and Cycle II. This subject of the research was the X MIPA of SMA El Shadai Magelang in the school year 2018/2019.Based on the findings, the result of the data showed that there was great improvement of the students’ motivation in learning English. The total improvement of the non-test from Pre-Cycle to Cycle II gradually increased. The students were enthusiastic to improve their writing skill and finding more information about the text. The students’ behavior changed as well as students interest to pay more attention to the teacher’s explanation in teaching learning process also improved.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out whether ‘Buku Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA/ MA/SMK/MAK’ textbook of the 11th grade at the first semester fulfilled syllabus points of the 2013 revised curricula. The researcher used descriptive qualitative research. The data would be gathered from document analysis of an English textbook entitled ‘Buku Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA/ MA/SMK/MAK’ published by KEMENTERIAN PENDIDIKAN DAN KEBUDAYAAN REPUBLIK INDONESIA 2017 of 10th grade senior high school. The ‘Buku Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA/ MA/SMK/MAK’ textbook had contented syllabus of basic competence and learning material. Each basic competence was delivered in certain exercises of four English skills. The learning materials were effectively comprised and support to develop the materials which understood about social function which made as text structures, cooperating tasks were presented and correlated the other rules of text structures, and language features were presented and developed based on proper and fit vocabulary, the pronunciation and intonation exercises are correlated grammar to support the materials of adverb, modals, connector, tenses, etc. It provided and developed suitable topics and multimedia using based on the syllabus guidance as well. On the other hand, this textbook had weakness about there were basic competence 3.6/4.6 and 3.8/4.8 which were not suitable and irregular. Each available basic competence was not deliver in certain exercises of four English skills some of them only have three skills for basic competence which was included social functions, text structures and language features, the skills for each basic competence are listening, reading, speaking, and writing, but in some basic competences they are only use three skills which is reading, speaking, and writing only.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the interjection words used in the Linked soul online comic. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data source is the Linked soul online comic in English. The results of the study are as follows. First, based on the type of interjection used in the comic, the researchers found 20 primary interjections and 10 secondary interjections. Second, based on its meaning, interjection can be divided into four (emotive, cognitive, conative, and phatic). Third, from the four interjection words, emotive occupies the top position (17), followed by cognitive (8), conative (4) and phatic (1). The total amount of interjection content in volume 1,3 and 5 found 36 interjections. 28 among them are the primary type and the eight interjections for secondary type.

Abstract

Malaysia is the country in the South East Asia that uses federal constitutional monarchy system which means it is a kingdom country. There are many diversities in Malaysia especially in culture. Moreover, culture plays an important role in society especially when it is together among people. Furthermore, knowing culture since youth is totally recommended in order to know how to deal it when facing the diversities because everyday people face the culture. That is why the kingdom put cultural values in the textbooks hoping that they learn them earlier and get better understanding.            This study focuses on analyzing the cultural values of the Malaysian English textbook used by the third graders of primary school that are represented in it. The method of collecting the data is documentation. Moreover, the technique of analyzing the data is based on the Brown’s theory which uses checklist to evaluate the text book based on particular criteria. The steps in analyzing the data are (1) observing the textbook, (2) identifying the cultural values based on the Brown’s theory, (3) collecting the data, and (4) drawing the conclusion.            The result of this study shows that there are six elements of cultural values represented in English Malaysian textbook used by the third graders of primary school in picture form (social organization (61%), custom & tradition (4%), religion (14%), art & literature (11%), form of government (1%), and economic system (9%)) while there are five elements of cultural values represented in sentence form (social organization (63%), custom & tradition (19%), art & literature (5%), economic system (13%), and language (1%)). There are 46 pictures and 120 sentences identified which contain the elements of cultural values.            As a conclusion, the cultural values that are represented in the books are found in two forms, in pictures and in sentence forms in which each form has different frequency of the cultural values that appear in the book. At last, the suggestions are given to the author of Malaysian English Textbook for balancing the cultural values that are represented in the book.

Abstract

Understanding the linguistic and literature pattern is essential for EFL students. The readers would know how to correctly use the part of speech in literature and the educational context. There are many types of speech, such as an article or known as a determiner. The article is a member of speech used with noun phrases to mark the identifiability of noun phrases' references.Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character that was created by a Scottish writer named Arthur Conan Doyle. Holmes is describing the prototype of the modern mastermind detective. In each novel, there is no doubt if the researcher will use one part of speech that dominates his/her novel. Whether it can be a verb, adjective, adverb, and even a straightforward form from the part of speech such as article or determiner, here, the researcher chooses to identify the use of an article in the novel Sherlock Holmes: A Study In Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle because researcher believes that study on the using of an article in a novel is still in short contact.

Abstract

This research aims to search into one of the most commonly found forms of a plural noun in the book "Select readings" by Linda Lee and Erik Gundersen. During this article, the author focuses on plural nouns. The author uses qualitative descriptive techniques in locating knowledge. Rodney (2005: 83) defines that noun may be a grammatically distinct class of words that incorporates those denoting all types of object, like persons, animals, and inanimate objects. According to (Frank 1972:13), nouns in inflections are nouns with particular plural ending, like -s/-es/-is. The plural noun encompasses an operation of the noun as having over one person/animal/object/idea. In writing, this study will build textbook readers "Select Readings" in designate the plural noun. Then choose "Select Readings" by Linda Lee and Erik Gundersen for EFL as preparation material for such tests as TOEFL, IELTS, etc. The“Select Readings” contains reading and exercise texts..

Abstract

Reading is one of basic skills that are important for the students. Because by reading, the students will get the information based on the text that they have read. Based on the observation, students still find difficulties in determine main idea and supporting details of the text.The objectives of this research are; first, is to explain whether About-Point strategy can improve the students’ learning motivation of the hortatory exposition text reading skill. The second is to describe how great is the improvement of the students’ reading skill taught by About-Point strategy.The researcher conducted a CAR (Classroom Action Research). It was divided into three phases; they are Pre-Cycle, Cycle I, and Cycle II. The researcher took XI PA 2 students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Kota Magelang in the school year 2018/2019 as the subject of this research.There was a good improvement of the students after the researcher taught by using About-Point strategy. They were curious and active in learning process of hortatory exposition text reading skill because they wanted to improve their reading skill.The result of the test showed that their score improved. In the Pre-Cycle their average score in reading test was 64.40, and in Cycle I, their average score was improved and reached 70.00. It means that they were any improvement of their score from the pre cycle to cycle I. The average score of reading test in Cycle II is 79.00 and it means they were motivated by using the strategy.

Abstract

Prepositions are the words that used nouns in phrases providing information about time, place, and other relations that involving actions and things. It can be describing that prepositions have an essential role in writing. In this case, EFL students must understand the use of prepositions, which will improve their writing and reading skills. The platform that is used for this research is from the Vice website's articles. This research aimed to examine prepositions of space in the Vice website that contains many articles using descriptive qualitative methods. This analysis also determines the number of space prepositions used, the functions, and the most widely used prepositions of space in the Vice articles.
