Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the naturalness of translation and finding the percentage of the naturalness of translation in translating short story entitled “Drupadi” from Indonesian into English. The subjects of this study were two native speakers which are come from the native area. Meanwhile, the object of this study was a short story entitled “Drupadi” especially the sentences in both Indonesian and English version. In this study, the researcher used Larson’s theory as the reference of the study in order to analyze the naturalness of translation in short story entitled “Drupadi” from Indonesian into English. The data were obtained by two methods of data collection, namely checklist and interview. The total of the data in this study was 131 sentences and it was analyzed descriptively. The result of this study showed that, 0% of the data is considered to fall into “unnatural” level, 2.29% are considered to fall into “less natural” level, 13.74% of the data belong to the “natural” level, and 83.97% of the data is classified as “highly natural”. Based on the result, it can be concluded that the short story entitled “Drupadi” which has been translated by Tom Hunter from Indonesian into English was in “highly natural” level and it can be used as teaching material for the teacher who teaches language, especially translation.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe teaching strategies implemented by lecturers in teaching English of continuing program students at STIKES Bali. Descriptive qualitative design use used. There were 2 respondents involved in this study which were lecturers who taught English in continuing program at STIKES Bali. The data were collected by using observation sheet and interview guide. The data were analyzed descriptively according to descriptive qualitative design. The finding showed that there were 5 teaching strategies from 7 teaching strategies proposed  implemented by lecturer such as Direct Instruction, Discussion, Group Work, Co-operative Learning and Performance Activity. Direct Instruction and Discussion were the most teaching strategies that chosen by English lecturers. Teaching strategies were implemented according to the topics and characteristics of the students. Choosing the right teaching strategy is very important in teaching English, especially in continuing program students at STIKES Bali. English lecturers in STIKES Bali are expected to implement more and appropriate teaching strategies to improve the quality of teaching and learning process.

Abstract

This present study aimed at identifying variants of address terms used by family of Puri Agung Singaraja and their interlocutors in their daily communication. This study was a descriptive study whose objective was to describe the characteristics of particular sample or individual or other phenomena. The subject of this study were the family of Puri Agung Singaraja. In collecting the intended data, the researcher used two instruments namely tape recorder which was used to record conversations and note book used to note various situation or context in which the conversations took place. The result of this study shows that there are ten variations of address terms used by the family of Puri Agung Singaraja. The variation ranges from addressing a father, a mother, brothers and sisters, uncles and aunts. The variations take place as a result of the influence of types of social relations between the speakers and the interlocutors.

Abstract

English has been taught in elementary school. In learning English, the English teacher teaches the four skills, namely, reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The reading process is one of the activities that needs to be given a great attention. There are some important approaches that can be used in the reading process, namely, individualized reading, language experience, shared reading, and so forth. The English teacher should be familiar with the important approaches of the reading process as well as the materials that reflect each approach. When the teacher reads about these approaches, he thinks about what he wrote about how he reads in the elementary school. He also needs to think where his experience fits and how he will teach reading.

Abstract

The present study aimed at investigating whether or not there was a significant difference in writing competency between the eighth grade junior high school students who received metalinguistic WCF and those who did not receive any feedback. This experimental study took the eighth grade students in SMPN 1 Abiansemal as the population and VIIIB and VIIIF respectively as the control and experimental group through cluster random sampling. The design of the study was pretest-posttest control group design. The data were the students’ pretest and posttest that were analyzed descriptively and inferentially. ANCOVA test was used in analyzing the data and to test the hypothesis. The result of the analysis using ANCOVA in SPSS 17.0 showed that the significance value of the group was 0.024 which was lower than the significance level 0.05. It means that the null hypothesis was rejected. It was concluded that there was a significant difference between students who received metalinguistic WCF and those who did not receive any feedback.

Abstract

The use of the first language (L1) in the English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom is becoming an on-going debate. A newly growing view to the use of L1 in the foreign language (FL) classroom called translanguaging views that by utilizing the L1 along with the TL in FL classroom is considered as functional practice of languages rather than an impediment in FL learning. Accordingly it is necessary to find out the functions of teachers’ practice of translanguaging in the EFL classroom since this view has not been much researched yet. Related to this, the current study was intended to find out the functions of the EFL teachers’ translanguaging and to find out the teachers’ reasons for the use of translanguaging. This study followed qualitative descriptive interactive research design, and the subjects consisted of three English teachers at the 7th grade classes at two junior high schools in Singaraja. The data were collected through observations and interviews and were analyzed descriptive qualitatively. The results of this study showed that there were 3 functions of translanguaging. The most frequent function was related to knowledge construction, followed by classroom management, and interpersonal relations. There were 9 reasons for the teachers’ use of translanguaging, namely: to facilitate students’ understanding, to provide L1 and TL comparison, to elicit students’ responses, to attract students’ attention, tomanage students, to promote discipline, to develop deeper personal relationship, to create secure classroom atmosphere, and to make the class more interesting. In sum, the use of translanguaging plays a number of functions in the EFL classroom but it should be considered also the ‘optimal’ use of it in EFL learning process because the overuse of L1 might bring negative impact.

Abstract

Code-switching is a common phenomenon in bilingual/multilingual community. The study investigates the code-switching from grammatical view in a mixed married of Indonesian-French wife-husband. The participants of the study were the mixed married and their three children. The data were obtained through video recording, observation, note-taking, and anecdotal recording of daily conversations between or among the family members in house domain that were analyzed qualitatively. It is found out that they commit code-switching either Inter or Intra-sentential one in communicating to each other.

Abstract

This study was conducted as an attempt to investigate in what step of scientific approach the teachers most frequently use translation in English Language Teaching as well as to find out the teachers’ reasons toward the use of translation in English Language Teaching based on scientific approach at SMP Negeri 4 Singaraja and SMP Negeri 5 Singaraja. It was conducted in qualitative research design. There were two teachers chosen as the subjects of study. The data were collected through audio recording the teaching and learning process and interviewing the subjects of study, while the techniques of analyzing data were done descriptively following the four processes according to the theory of Miles & Huberman (1984), namely: data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results of analysis indicated that the teachers most frequently used translation in exploring step of scientific approach. In addition, there were seven teachers’ reasons found in relation to the use of translation in the classroom, namely to help the students’ difficulty in: (1) understanding the instruction given by the teacher, (2) understanding the English vocabulary, (3) asking something in English, (4) understanding the tenses or grammar, (5) understanding the material deeply, (6) doing the task, and (7) presenting their work. The related parties interested in the same area of the research should give deeper concern in doing wider range of aspects involved in further study.

Abstract

This study aimed at developing English interactive multimedia (IMM) for sixth grade students of second semester in Singaraja. This study was a development study consisting of ten stages, namely: (1) need assessment, (2) instructional analysis, (3) learners and context analysis, (4) writing performance objectives, (5) developing assessment instruments, (6) developing design of English IMM, (7) developing English IMM, (8) product evaluation, (9) revision, and (10) the final Product. This study used experts’ judgement and limited field try-out as product evaluation. Six experts evaluated the product on three aspects (content, instruction and multimedia). The result showed the score of 3.96 (very good) within 0 – 4.00 scale. In limited field try-out, the subjects were the sixth graders of three elementary schools in Singaraja representing all accreditation grades (grade A, B and C). The result showed students’ responses trough post questionnaires: 68.02% of total responses indicated very good English IMM; and 30.08% indicated good English IMM. It means that the English IMM has been developed appropriately for both individual learning and classical instruction.

Abstract

This study aimed at finding out the process of code mixing, the reasons of using code mixing by English teacher of grade X and knowing the students’ responses on the use of code mixing used by their English teacher at SMAN Bali Mandara in the academic year 2014/2015. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The instruments used in this study were observation sheet, audio recorder, interview guide and questionnaires. Accordingly, the data accumulation showed that there was 84 sentences, classified as insertion processes, and then 37 sentences belonged to alternation process, and the last there were 14 sentences, classified as congruent lexicalization processes. The reasons of using code mixing were, 1) to make intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor, 2) to be emphatic about something, 3) there is no appropriate word which can be understood by the students, 4) to help the teacher to create relax situation, and 5) to quote somebody else.
