Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of bad faith in the character Yakushi Kabuto in Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto Shippuden manga using Jean-Paul Sartre's existentialism approach. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical method, with the main data source being manga texts that display Kabuto's inner conflict and character development, and supported by Sartre's existentialism theoretical study. The results of the analysis show that bad faith in Kabuto's character is formed gradually through the denial of existential freedom, self-reduction as a social tool or function, and dependence on identity determination by others, which places him in a being-for-others position and triggers an existential crisis. The Izanami technique is understood as a philosophical turning point that breaks the cycle of bad faith by forcing Kabuto to face himself reflectively without external roles and justifications, so that he returns to being a conscious subject who recognizes his existential freedom and responsibility. Thus, the character Yakushi Kabuto in the Naruto Shippuden manga represents a profound philosophical reflection on the formation of human identity, freedom, and existential crisis.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has encouraged the spread of regional dialects into virtual spaces. This study examines the phenomenon of Kansai Dialect vocabulary usage that has become a trend on the X Platform as a form of language variation in digital communication. The aim of this study is to identify the dominant forms of Kansai Dialect vocabulary and analyse the processes of semantic change and linguistic adaptation. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with a sociolinguistic design. The data consist of posts on the X Platform in September 2025, which were analysed using theories of semantics and semantic change. The results show that four vocabulary items are the most dominant, namely honma, meccha, egui, and shaanai. These vocabulary items have undergone semantic adaptations, including shifts in emotional function, dialect standardisation, semantic amelioration, and changes in pragmatic function. This study concludes that the use of Kansai Dialect on social media functions not only as a means of information exchange but also as a medium for self-expression and the formation of social closeness.

Abstract

This study aims to determine: (1) the characteristics of the Kansai dialect as yakuwarigo spoken by Kofune Ushio in the anime series Summertime Render, and (2) the use of the Kansai dialect as yakuwarigo spoken by Kofune Ushio in Summertime Render based on Abdul Chaer's sociolinguistic theory. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected using the observation and note-taking techniques, while theoretical triangulation was applied to ensure data validity. The data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The results indicate that there are five forms of shuujoshi with a total of 57 data, twenty forms of jodoushi with a total of 59 data, and seven forms of verb conjugation variations with a total of 51 data. Furthermore, the use of the Kansai dialect is not influenced by changes in setting or time; rather, it functions as a marker of the character's linguistic identity. Based on Abdul Chaer's sociolinguistic theory, the aspects of language user, language use, place of language use, and time of language use can be clearly identified, whereas the aspect of language contact is not found. Therefore, this study demonstrates that the Kansai dialect in Summertime Render is deliberately and systematically employed as a narrative device to construct the character's identity and support the coherence of the story.

Abstract

This article analyzes the linguistic strategies used to blur the boundary between reality and hallucination in the Japanese horror anime series Yami Shibai Season 10, while reflecting on the underlying Japanese sociocultural codes. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach and an interpretive case study method, examining transcripts from the first five episodes. The analysis utilizes Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis framework, integrated with the Japanese cultural concepts of uchi/soto and tatemae/honne. The findings identify three main linguistic strategies: (1) referential incongruity and linguistic personification; (2) ambiguous spatial–temporal deixis; and (3) unnatural conversational registers. The analysis demonstrates that these strategies interact with and are reinforced by the Japanese cultural framework. The transgression of uchi/soto boundaries and the tension between tatemae and honne transform linguistic ambiguity into a distinct horror aesthetic. In conclusion, language in Yami Shibai serves as a cultural instrument that not only generates fear but also reflects the structural anxieties of contemporary Japanese society.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse in depth the layers of meaning embedded in the lyrics of Wacci’s song “Takaramono” by applying Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach, which encompasses denotation, connotation, and myth formation as representations of the naturalisation of ideology within culture. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method using a content analysis approach. The research data are limited to five selected linguistic units (signs), identified based on significant lexical shifts in meaning, representations of physical metaphors, and their potential sociocultural significance. The data were collected using observation and note-taking techniques. The findings reveal a shift in meaning from the denotative to the connotative level across the five principal signs: hagemashiau (励まし合う), takaramono (宝物), senaka wo osu (背中を押す), kurayami (暗闇), and hitosuji no hikari (一筋の光). At the connotative level, these signs represent emotional solidarity, motivation, despair, and hope. At the third level of signification, the myth analysis demonstrates how the song lyrics naturalise the philosophy of contemporary Japanese society, including the myths of sympathetic collectivism, the desacralisation of material wealth, the moral obligation of emotional mutual support (giri-ninjō), and psychological resilience (ganbaru/gaman), in which abstract memories and interpersonal relationships (kizuna) are ideologically constructed as enduring spiritual “treasures.” The study concludes that the lyrics of “Takaramono” do not merely explore the melancholy of individual separation; rather, they function as a cultural medium that legitimises the importance of empathy and spiritual resilience as the social foundations for confronting the dynamics of contemporary Japanese society.
