Abstract

Mastery of shuushoku meishi (modified nouns) is an essential aspect of the Japanese language. This study aims to identify the types and causes of errors in the use of shuushoku meishi made by students of the Japanese Language Education Study Program, class of 2024. The urgency of this research lies in the importance of understanding error patterns to develop more effective learning strategies. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed using error analysis. The data for this study were obtained from students of the Japanese Language Education Study Program at the State University of Jakarta, class of 2024, consisting of written test results regarding the use of shuushoku meishi. Data were collected through a completion test instrument and analyzed using the error analysis method with a descriptive qualitative approach. The findings reveal that 64% of student responses demonstrated an inability to correctly apply shuushoku meishi. The findings reveal that 64% of student responses were incorrect. The types of errors identified include mistakes in constructing shuushoku meishi structures, improper particle usage, errors in character writing (kanji), and inappropriate vocabulary selection. These errors are caused by first-language interference, overgeneralization, weak mastery of Japanese syntax, and a lack of contextual practice. The high error rate indicates a need for enhanced learning strategies that emphasize complex sentence structures and the use of visual media to reinforce comprehension.

Abstract

Work ethic is an important factor that influences workers' mindsets in carrying out their jobs. The work ethic in Japan and Indonesia is quite different from each other. In this case, research related to the existence ofwork ethic is important to study. This can be used as a guideline and evaluation of the work ethic in the country where the workers are located. This study focuses on a contrastive analysis by comparing the existence ofvalues or work ethic in Japan and Indonesia. This studyuses a descriptive qualitative approach. Data was obtained from questionnaires andinterviews conducted with Indonesian workers in Japan and workers in Indonesia. The results show that work ethic is influencedby many factors, such as the length of time a person has been working, their level of discipline, andtheir compliance in accepting the values inherent in the work ethic. Based on the results of the interviews, workers in Japan showed a more disciplined andobedient work ethic and were able to apply the values of bushido in their work. Meanwhile, most workers in Indonesia have not yet applied the moral values of professionalism in their work. Thus, the work ethic in Indonesia has not yet been consistently implemented at an optimal level.

Abstract

This study focuses on Japanese verb conjugation learning among beginner-level self-directed learners and to examine the relationship between learning strategies and conjugation accuracy. The research employed a descriptive quantitative approach combined with qualitative analysis involving three self-directed learners at approximately JLPT N5 level. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire on learning strategies and a conjugation test covering polite form (ます形), te-form (て形), past form (た形), negative form (ない形), and phonological changes in godan verbs. The findings indicate a positive tendency between structured learning strategies and higher conjugation accuracy. Learners who actively classified verbs, engaged in repeated practice, and performed self-correction achieved significantly higher test scores compared to those who relied primarily on exposure without systematic strategies. The most noticeable differences appeared in godan verb conjugation, which requires pattern recognition and phonological rule generalization. These results suggest that the quality of learning strategies plays a more crucial role than the amount of study time in developing a stable morphological system among self-directed Japanese language learners.

Abstract

This study describes the implementation of project-based learning (PBL) in a Sociolinguistics course for undergraduate students of Japanese language education. Through individual projects, students were tasked with developing small-scale research papers on sociolinguistic issues in Japanese, bridging theoretical knowledge with authentic academic practice. The study employed a qualitative classroom re-search design involving 70 undergraduate students in a Japanese language education program. Data were collected through students’ project reports, reflective journals, and instructor observations, and ana-lyzed using thematic analysis to examine the development of sociolinguistic competence, The data were collected from students’ project reports, reflective journals, and instructor observations. Findings indicate improved performance-based outcomes, particularly in students’ ability to apply sociolinguistic concepts in research writing, use appropriate registers, and analyze politeness strategies in context. Qualitative themes highlighted increased sociolinguistic awareness and deeper connections between language, cul-ture, and context. The paper argues that PBL provides a viable framework for cultivating higher-order thinking skills, learner autonomy, and intercultural sensitivity in Japanese language education. Implica-tions are offered for curriculum design, teacher training, and future research on linking linguistic theory with practical applications in foreign language classrooms.

Abstract

This study examined degree prefixes in Japanese, focusing on the prefixes chou- and oo-, which intensify the meaning of base words without altering their grammatical category. The research addressed the forms, meanings, functions, and applications of these prefixes in Japanese utterances. The study aimed to explain the morphological process of prefixation and the differences in intensity produced by each prefix. Data were collected using the listening-and-note-taking method by observing the linguistic expressions in the anime “Boku no Hiiro Akademia: Futari no Eiyuu”. The analysis was conducted through a descriptive qualitative approach. The results show that chou- functions as a hyper-intensifier with evaluative nuances, while oo- conveys more concrete and quantitative intensity. These prefixes play an essential role in shaping meaning and stylistic expression in the anime’s dialogue.

Abstract

Many songs carry personal pronouns that musicians use to deliver their messages, yet listeners rarely pay attention to them. This study analyzed the use of personal pronouns in song lyrics, the meanings behind their selection, and the axiological values they carry. A qualitative descriptive approach was used to examine Japanese personal pronouns across five songs from The Sketchbook's album Sketchbook : Kakusei, Colors, Kiwoku, Birthday, and Mirai e. The theoretical framework drew on Iori's account of Japanese personal pronouns, Chaer and Muliastuti's semantic theory, and Scheler's axiological classification. Data were collected through careful listening and systematic notation. The findings show that The Sketchbook uses three personal pronouns across the five songs: boku with 14 data, kimi with 9 data, and bokura with 6 data, totaling 29 data. Each pronoun serves different functions, shifting between the songwriter's own perspective and the person being addressed. In terms of axiology, all three pronouns predominantly reflect spiritual values, as the lyrics deal with self-awareness, human connection, and questions of meaning.

Abstract

This study examines how the concept of ikigai is represented in the anime Barakamon. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the research analyzes various scenes and dialogues that portray the journey of the main character, Seishuu Handa, in discovering his true self after experiencing a career and emotional crisis. Data were collected through the identification of significant scenes, the transcription of dialogues, and thematic categorization based on the four main components of ikigai: personal enjoyment or interest, individual competence, contribution to society, and professional value potential. The findings reveal that Barakamon clearly depicts Handa's process of rebuilding his ikigai through his relationships with the villagers, self-reflection, and creative engagement in the art of calligraphy. Handa's changes in attitude and psychological development demonstrate that ikigai is dynamic, evolving through a series of experiences, failures, and social interactions. This study concludes that Barakamon provides a compelling representation of how ikigai emerges in everyday life while highlighting the relationship between Japanese cultural values and the contemporary search for meaning in life.

Abstract

Onomatopoeia is one of the distinctive features of the Japanese language that functions not only to imitate sounds but also to represent psychological states, emotions, and the inner experiences of characters. In manga, onomatopoeia serves as both a linguistic and a visual element that reinforces the conveyance of meaning. However, previous studies have predominantly focused on giongo (sound-imitating onomatopoeia), while research on gijōgo remains relatively limited. Therefore, this study aims to describe the forms, meanings, and semantic functions of gijōgo found in the manga I Want to Eat Your Pancreas by Yoru Sumino and Izumi Kirihara. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using the observation method (simak) and the non-participatory observation technique (Simak Bebas Libat Cakap—SBLC). The data source consists of all dialogues and onomatopoeic expressions found in the two volumes of I Want to Eat Your Pancreas. The data were collected, classified according to the categories of gijōgo, and analysed using a semantic approach while considering the narrative context and the visual elements of the manga. The findings reveal that gijōgo in the manga represents not only positive emotions, such as happiness, warmth, and excitement, through the onomatopoeic expressions ニコッ (niko) and わくわく (wakuwaku), but also negative emotions, including awkwardness, tension, anxiety, surprise, irritation, and hostility, through expressions such as しーん (shiin), ドクン (dokun), ビクッ (biku), イラッ (ira), and ギロッ (giro). The meanings of these onomatopoeic expressions are constructed through the interaction between their linguistic forms, conversational context, characters' facial expressions, and visual illustrations, thereby representing psychological states that are not always explicitly conveyed through dialogue. This study concludes that gijōgo in manga functions not only as a semantic device but also as a narrative device that contributes to characterisation, strengthens the atmosphere, and enables readers to gain a deeper understanding of the characters' emotional development.

Abstract

This study examined the formation process and semantic meanings of deverbal compound nouns in Japanese. Deverbal compound nouns were defined as compound words formed from verbs that had undergone nominalization, primarily through the renyoukei form. The aim of this study was to describe the morphological processes, semantic characteristics, and the relationship between the original verbs and the newly formed meanings in fifteen Japanese compound nouns. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, and the data were collected from the Kotobank.jp dictionary. The analysis was conducted using the immediate constituent analysis method to identify morphemic structures, as well as the theories of Lexical Conceptual Structure (LCS) and Qualia Structure to explain the semantic relations among the constituent elements. The results show three main formation patterns of deverbal compound nouns, namely N + V (連用形)˜, V (連用形) + V ((連用形), and VN constructions that can function as predicates through the suru construction. Semantically, three dominant tendencies are identified, namely idiomatic meaning, process meaning, and resultative meaning. These findings indicate that the formation of deverbal compound nouns involves not only morphological processes but also mechanisms of semantic conceptualization in Japanese.
