Abstract

AbstractThis study aimed at analyzing primary teachers’ perception toward pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) and the implementation in teaching English to young learners in Jembrana regency. This study also aimed at analyzing the consistency between teachers’ perception and the implementation and exploring problems that might be encountered by the teachers. There were 3 primary teachers in Jembrana who involved in this study. This study was embedded mixed method design dominant qualitative which used questionnaire, observation sheet, and interview guide in collecting the data. The result showed that there was no consistency between teachers’ perception and their implementation of PCK. Teachers’ perception was very strong but the implementation was very low. The interview result showed that there were several problems faced by the teachers, such as the non-English background teachers do not mastering English, lack of experience in teaching English, difficult to find an appropriate media, and lack of time in teaching.  Keywords: Teachers’ perception, implementation, Pedagogical Content Knowledge

Abstract

This study aimed at describing and relating the students’ reading anxiety, reading self-efficacy to their reading competency in SMAN 3 Singaraja. There are three research questions in this study, namely: (1) How are the students’ reading anxiety, reading self-efficacy, and their reading competency? (2) are there pair-wise relationships of students’ reading anxiety, reading self-efficacy, and reading competency? (3) Is there significant multiple correlation of the predictor and criterion variables? The three instruments were used to collect the data; reading anxiety scale, reading self-efficacy scale, and objective reading competency test. The obtained data were analyzed in two phases namely, descriptively and inferentially. The findings show that: (1) the students’ reading anxiety on higher-order-items is high, while reading self-efficacy and reading competency are low; (2) the negative correlations between reading anxiety, self-efficacy and competency; positive correlation between self-efficacy and competency, (3) negative multiple correlation between reading anxiety and self-efficacy to their competency.

Abstract

The English lecturers in EFL countries were urged to consider online teaching and learning when COVID-19 epidemic has spread around the globe. The purposes of this study were: 1) to describe of how English lecturers perceive the e-learning; 2) to describe kinds of e-learning used by English lecturers; and 3) to describe the effectiveness of e-learning from the English lecturers’ perspective. The data analysis covers interview, data reduction, data display and conclusion. It is found that from the English lecturers’ perspectives, e-learning is the use of internet in accessing the virtual classroom learning to engage the students and lectures into the meaningful learning process. The EFL online e-learning instructions are MALL and CALL. The language acquisition process could not be effectively done as the process of e-learning has its limitations (the lack of internet connection from the students’ side). Despite that problems, e-learning classrooms can be helpful during COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the university student engagement in the use of online discussions in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Context in North Bali. Moreover, it was used to analyze university student limitations and supporting factors in the use of online discussions as part of blended-learning. The university student engagement was determined by Schlecthy’s theory of student engagement level. The result showed that the university student engagement in North Bali referred to the Ritual Compliance Level. They have low attention and no commitment in learning. They tend to learn dependently and work only for the sake of compliance. Besides, six factors were limited and five factors were supported them during the learning process through online discussion. Therefore, lecturers were suggested to create a pleasant learning atmosphere by building a good relationship with students in order to make students engaged in the online discussions.

Abstract

Students’ reading interest influenced students’ reading comprehension. Thus, they needed a strategy and media in reading.  This study aimed to find out the effect of the implementation of the TPS strategy combined with Kahoot! on students reading comprehension. This research was experimental. The research design was post-test only control group design. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. The result showed the mean score of the experimental group was 69.33, while the mean score of the control group was 74.67. The result t observed was higher than t critical (2.004 > -1.116) and (2.004 > -1.152). It indicated that accepted the null hypothesis. It concluded that there was no significant effect of the implementation of the TPS strategy combined with Kahoot! of students reading comprehension. The TPS strategy can use for different skills.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze how the English teacher perception about Self-directed learning, to describe the activities assigned by the teacher in online learning, and to identify Self-directed Learning components that appears in the activities assigned by the teacher. The research design in this study used embedded mix-method research design which the data was dominant presented in a qualitative data and then supported by quantitative data. The subject of this study was one English teacher who teach in tenth grade students in SMA 1 Semarapura in Klungkung Regency. There were four research instruments used in this study, those are researcher, questionnaire, observation table, and identification table. There were three main result of this research. Firstly, the teacher has positive responses for the all of the aspects of perception in questionnaires which knowledgeable in terms of knowledge, very anticipated in terms of implementation and, influential in terms of impact. Secondly, the activities assigned is not optimal yet especially in the post activity and whilst activity. Thirdly, there are two Self-directed Learning components with four indicators appeared in the activities assigned by the teacher. The data showed that there was a mismatch between teacher perception and activities assigned by the teacher in online learning.

Abstract

The research is aimed to analyze the maxims violations committed by students of the English study program, Faculty of Foreign Languages, Mahasaraswati Denpasar University. All speakers and interlocutors may not understand well the intent and purpose of utterance. Some utterances may contain different aims and objectives from the statement or question of the other person. To determine the suitability and misunderstanding of speech between listeners and speakers, Grice (1975) has initiated a theory of cooperation principles by classifying them into four types. This research is a qualitative descriptive study by collecting data by observation, note taking and recording. The result of this research is violations of maxims have occurred in students' speech. The four violations of maxims were found here. Students violate the maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relevance and maxim of method. The most dominant violation of maxims is a violation of the maxims of quantity.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the impact of infographics in online Jigsaw setting towards Indonesian EFL senior high school students’ reading comprehension. The research was a pre-experimental study with one group pretest-posttest design. The sample was one class of intact groups from tenth graders which was randomly assigned by English teacher in SMA Negeri 1 Singaraja. The data collection employed pre-test-posttest and were analyzed descriptively and inferentially through IBM SPSS Statistics 23. The results show that (1) the students’ posttest mean was 88.38 which was higher than the pretest that was 65.00; and (2) there was a significant difference between the posttest mean and that pretest mean Sig. (two-tailed) was 0.000, which was < 0.05. Therefore, it could be concluded that infographics in an online Jigsaw setting had a positive and significant impact towards Indonesian EFL’s reading comprehension.

Abstract

The learning process is influenced by various factors. One of the important factors is the learning media as a supporter of the learning process, especially in learning ESP subjects. This study aimed to developed English materials for Front Office based on student’s need analyses. The subjects of this research were one teacher at SMK Negeri 2 Singaraja as the head of the front office at the school, 35 students in the second semester in class 12 AP2 of SMK Negeri 2 Singaraja, and one of the front office staff who worked at Kutabex Hotel. A questionnaire and a checklist used as the instrument to obtaining the data in this study. The method of this research used the Design and Development (D&D) model. The data has been analyzed with descriptive qualitative research. The result shows that the findings are (1) the study was developed three topics, namely: handling group guest check-in, handling group guest check out, and financial transaction based on the student’s need. (2) The design of English materials contains input, content focus, language focus, and task. In the task, the design included four English basic skills, namely: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. (3) The quality of the product belongs to very good quality based on the result of two expert judges.

Abstract

Rizwan Khan is one of the characters which can be the representation of Muslims living in United States. It is one of the characters existing in the film “My Name is Khan”. This study aimed to analyze the family values of the film and the prejudice toward Muslims living in United States. The research design of this study was content analysis which focused on how the family values appeared on the film and identify the prejudice in the film. It was found that there were three different family values, such as Indian family values, American White family values, and American Black family values. Each family has its own characteristic in raising their children. The prejudice toward Muslims was found in almost scenes of the film after the ninth of September tragedy. The prejudice led to the intolerance, hatred and violence. It influenced the economic, comfort and social life of Muslims living in United States. It can be concluded that every family has different ways in raising their children. In addition, not all Americans have tolerance and accept differences in their neighborhoods.
