In total, there were seventy six students who were selected as the representative of the whole population. To collect the data, the study used reading comprehension test which was administered at the end of teaching sessions. In investigating the result, two statistical methods were applied namely descriptive and inferential statistics by using t-test, product moment and one way ANCOVA. At the end of investigation, it was found that, first, there was a significant difference in reading comprehension between the students who were treated by using STAD and the students who were treated by conventional method. Second, viewed from students self esteem which gave minimum contribution toward the difference of reading comprehension ‘s score between STAD class and conventional class, it was found that there was no significant correlation between self esteem and teaching method, third there was significant correlation between students’ self esteem and reading comprehension for all of the students who were taught by STAD and conventional method, there was no correlation between students’ self esteem and reading comprehension for the students who were taught by STAD. Abstract

The aim of this study was to prove whether the implementation of PARTS Strategy and the students’ anxiety gave a significant effect to the students’ reading competency. The study was an experimental study by applying Post test only control group design. The population was nine classes (420 students) of grade XI in SMA Negeri 5 Denpasar academic year 2012/2013, in which 2 classes were samples which were assigned into two groups, i.e. experimental group and control group, by a Multi-Stage Random Sampling. The research data were collected through questionnaire and test that were analyzed using Statistical Two-Way Anova. The results show that, first, there was  different effect in reading competency between the students who were taught by implementing PARTS strategy and those who were taught by implementing Conventional reading startegy (Sig.=0.004 <=0.05). Secondly, there was not interactional effect of PARTS strategy and  anxiety level upon the students’ reading competency at the eleventh grade students of SMA negeri 5 Denpasar (Sig.=0.966 >=0.05). In view of the results of this study, it is therefore suggested  that teachers should use PARTS Strategy as an innovative teaching strategy since the facilitation of this strategy significantly improved the students’ reading competency.

Abstract

This study was a case study which aimed to analyze the types of questions used by an English teacher, the purposes of questions asked by the teacher, and the strategy used to cope with non-responded questions. The subject of this study was an English teacher who taught seventh grade students at SMPN 1 Singaraja which is located in Singaraja, Buleleng regency, Bali, Indonesia. The data were collected through observation, interview, and video recording. The result of the analysis showed that from 241 questions, the teacher more frequently asked convergent, closed, and display questions rather than divergent, open, and referential questions. Procedural questions were also found. The teacher’s questions served several purposes such as to check students’ knowledge and understanding, to attract students’ activeness, to develop students’ interest and curiosity, and to stimulate students in stating information. It was also found that the teacher used seven strategies to cope with non-responded questions. This study suggested the teacher to balance the number of convergent, closed, and display with divergent, open, and referential questions to be used during teaching and learning process. In addition, the teacher should know more about the strategies for non-responded questions and the proper way to use those strategies to make the teaching and learning process runs smoothly.
