Abstract

The high cost of fertilizer had left many small holder farmers unable to access fertilizer which resulted in low agricultural production in Malawi. To solve this problem, the government introduced the Farm Input Subsidy Program (FISP) in 2004/2005 growing season. The subsidy program constituted about 60% of all fertilizer imports into the country. But besides huge investment into this program, food insecurity situation had not been eliminated leaving many smallholder farmers depending on food handouts to take them to the next harvesting season. Policy makers are still exploring options on how to exploit the benefits of FISP. It is for this reason that an investigation was conducted on transportation challenges in fertilizer supply chain, as late delivery was reported to be one of the problems in the distribution process. The research objectives were to investigate the fertilizer supply chain challenges in Malawi, determine transportation challenges in the distribution of FISP fertilizer and recommend solutions for effective fertilizer distribution. To achieve this, a pragmatic philosophy was adopted by employing both qualitative as well as quantitative research methods in data collection. A snowball sampling method was used with the assistance of Road Transport Operators Association (RTOA) in Malawi. Three managers from both public as well as private fertilizer companies were interviewed while 38 questionnaires were administered to transporters that had been involved in subsidy fertilizer distribution. The findings of the research spotted logistical problems in the process of awarding contracts to fertilizer importers as well as transporters as not effective. Other findings included problems with beneficiary identification, high transportation costs, not utilizing ICT, ITS and lack of Research and Development as other challenges affected productivity. The research came up with a Roadmap to Fertilizer Supply Chain as a reference material to future fertilizer supply chain studies, proposed “group fertilizer procurement” in future fertilizer procurement policies and provided empirical evidence of transportation challenges affecting fertilizer distribution in Malawi.

Abstract

Abstract- The constant development of the electric power industry today leads to a decrease in the sustainability and growth of accidents in the “UES of Russia”, necessitates the adoption of operational and supply chain management decisions that are not possible without digitalization. The problems that the industry will face in implementing digitalization projects are identified, namely: increased equipment wear; lack of funding, requirements for technological compatibility of the characteristics and parameters of power equipment and devices, unified switching standards (protocols) and information models, required number of instruments, equipment and software. Despite the obvious problems, digitalization is being actively implemented in the power industry. It is noted that the target model of digitalization in the power industry should include three blocks: digital technologies and databases, information technology infrastructure, including communication channels, information security systems. The spheres of application of existing and future digital technologies and databases at all stages of energy production are considered: generation, power grids, sales activities, in their relationship with the management bodies of the wholesale and retail electricity and capacity markets and regulatory bodies. The possibilities of using own and leased communication channels are critically evaluated, the advantages of various communication channels are revealed. It is noted that it is necessary to use channels based on fiber-optic communication lines as the main ones, and satellite communication channels as reserve ones. Special attention is drawn to information security. The components of the effect of digitalization for consumers, energy companies and the state are determined. It is proposed to introduce integrated indicators of the effect of digitalization. The proposed measures are necessary for the implementation of full-scale digitalization of the power industry, including the preservation of savings from digitalization in power companies, government support, and the creation of conditions for the development of active consumers.

Abstract

The present study contributes to the SCM and marketing literature, concerning the roles of SCM alignment and firm’s absorptive capacity to utilize social capital for achieving supply chain resilience. Firstly, understanding means to enhance supply chain resilience via social capital, therefore, in this regard taking absorptive capacity into account is necessary. Secondly, this study highlights that SCM alignment has the power to restrict the extent that social capital supports the firm’s absorptive capacity. Thirdly, the study has examined the moderating role of supply chain agility in the relationship between the social capital and supply chain resilience. Finally, the supply chain resilience outcomes were examined. As a result, those conditions and means were also explained through which firms utilize accumulated external resources in the form of social capital and achieve supply chain resilience to enhance organizational performance.  The study has used the SEM-PLS for the analysis of the data. The response rate of the current study is 75.1 percent. The data is collected from the manufacturing firms listed in Indonesian stock exchange. The results of the study highlight that firms mostly possess valuable resources that are entrenched within inter-organizational ties, and a few such resources may remain inactive if not utilized against adversities and risks. Hence, absorptive capacity must be developed and activated by the firms to capitalize social capital in an effort to develop supply chain resilience.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the customersâ?? commitment and behaviour towards an effective of â??drop trailer methodâ?? (DTM) in haulage industry. There was limited study in customersâ?? commitment and behaviour on the efficiency of DTM. The study on DTM was due to the increasing volumes of international trade using haulage transport and trailers which led to rapid growth of container volumes at Malaysian ports. The maximum usage of trailers are needed to cater the growth of containersâ?? movements at present. The detention trailers by the customers during loading and unloading processes caused inefficiency in haulage performance. Therefore, monitoring on the usage of trailers will increase to the overall movements and reduction in the detention times. Exploratory and qualitative studies are also used in this research. The results indicated that the effectiveness of DTM is a crucial part to benchmark on the overall businesses, particularly in effective ways coordinating and utilising to the overall trailers. It is used to indicate haulage operatorsâ?? achievement towards their objectives. The better control in DTM may be used for better planning in the movements in future. The study suggests on the effective DTM structure for better impact in monitoring haulage business towards costs, revenues and profits.
