Abstract

Grumusol soil has considerable potential for crop cultivation; however, its productivity is often constrained by unfavorable physical and chemical properties. This study evaluated the effects of different vermicompost sources and Grumusol soils from two land-use types on the growth and nitrogen (N) uptake of sweet corn (Zea mays L.). A two-factor factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications was employed. The first factor comprised four vermicompost treatments: no vermicompost (control), chicken manure vermicompost, cattle manure vermicompost, and market waste vermicompost. The second factor was Grumusol soil collected from paddy fields and dryland. Plant height, leaf number, stem diameter, fresh biomass, dry biomass, and nitrogen uptake were measured. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance, followed by the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at the 5% significance level. Vermicompost source significantly affected plant height at 35 days after planting (DAP) and nitrogen uptake. Market waste vermicompost produced the highest nitrogen uptake, whereas cattle manure and market waste vermicomposts resulted in greater plant height at 35 DAP than the other treatments. Grumusol soil origin significantly affected plant height, stem diameter, fresh biomass, dry biomass, and nitrogen uptake but had no significant effect on leaf number. Sweet corn grown in Grumusol soil from dryland exhibited superior vegetative growth and nitrogen uptake compared with plants grown in Grumusol soil from paddy fields. These findings suggest that market waste vermicompost, particularly when applied to Grumusol soil from dryland, can serve as an effective nutrient management strategy for improving sweet corn growth and nitrogen uptake.

Abstract

Titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum (Becc.)) is an endemic flora of Sumatra whose population has declined, placing the species at risk of extinction. Conservation efforts through in vitro culture are needed to support its preservation. In medium-term in vitro conservation, plantlet growth must be suppressed to prolong subculture intervals, reduce contamination risks, and lower maintenance costs. This study aimed to determine the optimum concentration of paclobutrazol for suppressing the shoot growth of A. titanum under in vitro conditions. The research was conducted from October 2024 to May 2025 at the Tissue Culture Laboratory, Universitas Andalas. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design with four concentrations of paclobutrazol: 0, 1, 2, and 3 mg L⁻¹. Each treatment was replicated three times, resulting in a total of 12 experimental units. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (F-test) at the 5% significance level, followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at the 5% level when significant differences were detected. The results showed that paclobutrazol at 3 mg L⁻¹ was the most effective treatment for suppressing shoot height increment of A. titanum, resulting in a growth increase of only 0,2 cm and 0.17 cm. These findings indicate that paclobutrazol has potential as a growth-retarding agent for the medium-term in vitro conservation of A. titanum.

Abstract

Seed-borne diseases caused by Colletotrichum and Fusarium can reduce the viability and vigor of chili seeds. An environmentally friendly alternative for disease management is the use of Trichoderma atroviride as a biopriming agent. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of T. atroviride biopriming on the germination of Kopay chili seeds infected with Colletotrichum scovillei and Fusarium oxysporum. The experiment was arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of eight treatments with four replications. Observed parameters included germination percentage, root length, shoot length, fresh weight, dry weight, vigor index, and root emergence time. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test (DNMRT) at the 5% significance level. The results showed that T. atroviride treatment produced the highest germination percentage (100%), which was not significantly different from the positive control (95%) and negative control (90%). The T. atroviride treatment also resulted in the greatest root length (2.54 cm), shoot length (1.74 cm), highest vigor index (100%), and the fastest root emergence (2 days). In contrast, the C. scovillei treatment exhibited the lowest germination percentage (30%) and vigor index (45%). These findings suggest that biopriming with T. atroviride has the potential to enhance seed vigor and support early seedling growth of chili under seed-borne pathogen stress.
